Why would anyone ever make Briala the power behind the throne?

Certainly, the city elves do desserve better than what they have. However, Briala's policies begin and end at "elves" when Orlais is so much more. The overwhelming majority of orlesians are humans and it is one of the few countries in Thedas capable of giving both Tevinter and Qunari pause.

And it should be placed in the hands of "reason is no good" Briala? What does she even know about ruling?

I think it's the option for those who can't reconcile her and Celene to get the best of both worlds.

I think my original point was that Celene wasn't trying to conquer Ferelden, she was attempting to unite the two countries through diplomacy. Even when that didn't work, she didn't rush the troops out the door to conquer them because her actual goal was peace. But you're right, after what happened with King Meghren, I doubt there would be a lasting peace if she did marry King Cailan.

I doubt she is without ulterior motive IMO, if Celene genuinely wish to settle Orlais dispute with Ferelden through diplomacy, perhaps she should know that political marriage...such union would bring Ferelden back to Orlais's leash, and many in Ferelden would see this as an attempt to annex their country. Ferelden are proud people after all. It seems like the only way for these two nations to settle their dispute, and achieve the lasting peace is through negotiation, peace talk only.

I wonder what would happen if Celene attempting to dispatch Anora, and marry Cailan wasn't a cut content in DAO.

In-game: Cadash wanted those spies and didn't really have a horse in the race.
Out of game: "Vive la revolution" is worth at least one game.

hmph. As if I care.

Yeah need to save some of the halla statues so you can get the dirt on Celene. Then you pretty much own all three of them :3

That's what I thought. I ended up not doing the Celene dirt my first run because for some reason my court approval dropped by 25 points (strangely, this time it went up).

One line from Gaspard: "I detest The Game." Then "You're too sensible to be Orlesian" sealed the deal. I haven't read the book (though I've heard a lot about it), so to me, Gaspard looked like he would send me troops to fight Corypheus, while Celene's promise of support sounded more like "I'll throw 10+ parties in Inquisition's honor to improve my- I mean your reputation with the other nations, because clearly thet's a priority right now. The Game~"

Yep. When he said he detested the Game, I knew he was the best choice to turn crappy Orlais around.

Yikes that's a steep hit.

I tend to make up those hits with secrets or fashionably late.

It's important to remember that whoever is chosen to lead Orlais will inevitably not matter by the time DA4 comes around. There will be some retconning done to ensure that whoever we left in charge is in essentially the same position regardless of what their epilogue slide said.

Spite, apathy, or perhaps a desire to have control over Orlais.

Or they'll make silly cameos.

Whoever you chose to rule Ferelden in DAO hardly matters, except in that Here Into the Abyss mission, but it really doesn't effect the outcome of Ferelden as a nation.

I'm disappointed the ruler of Ferelden only got a cameo. I had Anora as sole queen, and she made an abrupt appearance after the mage drama. I was expecting her to have a larger part.... Ugh. I haven't finished the game, but I heard that's all she appears in.

And freaking Alistair gets a larger part if you make him a Grey Warden.

Love Celene, especially after finding the naked guy tied to her bed. Girl knows how to get **** done. Needles to say, I supported her in both my playthroughs while leaving Gaspard and Briala to get their asses executed.

Except without the aid of the Inquisitor, she gets absolutely nothing done.

Also, you executed the only woman she loves, doubtless rendering her an emotional wreck, sitting in her safe room gazing at Briala's amulet with tear-filled eyes instead of governing the nation.

Celene backstabbing the Inquisition if Briala is exiled confirmed to not be true:

Meanwhile Gaspard is organizing the afterlife to invade the Fade

The mental image of this made my morning. Bravo.

Honestly, my current (first) playthrough I humiliated all three of them and forced them to bend the knee to me, but I feel like in the future I'll go with Gaspard. Even if he is a bit of an ultra-nationalist imperialist, he's open to being reasoned with, hates The Game and Orlais itself still isn't powerful enough on its own to go toe-to-toe with The Inquisition at the height of its power and influence.

Having Celene as empress but dependent upon the Inquisition seems pretty much equal to having Gaspard as emperor but dependent upon the Inquisition, and I'd take Gaspard over Celene 100% of the time between the two.

Question is, can you leave Briala alive and still have Gaspard be the powerful one in the duo, or does Briala always have the leg up over Gaspard?

Nope, Gaspard will always execute Briala if he isn't blackmailed

Celene's bad epilogue triggers if Briala is exiled or dead, Gaspard is dead, and according to the wiki "unknown condition" its probably court approval

Which would surely make the Inquisitor the better ruler of Orlais, given that the three contestants we're forced to pick from tend to come across like a bunch of ineffectual teenagers who've started a war between their cliques and now want to have it out at the school prom...

I favored Gaspard in the book, but found that siding with him in the game didn't feel right to my inquisitor. I also liked Briana a lot more in the book than in the game as I suspect her of bad doings that night and gaming my inquisitor, although I found no proof.

Yeah, it seems the quest is intended for people who read the The Masked Empire yet the game doesn't show some of the traits they had in the game are completely gone. Seems Briala wants to keep the eluvians to herself.

Not just that, but I can't think of anyone else who profits from targeting the elven servants so specifically. Shades of Briana's parents, to my mind. Of course, I may have missed some information that was hidden away, but from a purely 'who gains from this' perspective....

Really, what I took from the book and the dealings in Val Royeaux is that Orlesians are horrible people, lol.
