Fair enough. Just keep in mind that Thedas is not real life and that there are other influences in the setting. For example, David Gaider himself confirmed in the past that City Elves were based initially on the situation of Jews in Medieval Europe. Values resonance is strong, because a group of people being oppressed is a constant throughout history. It's just that the people and the excuse change.

I believe Celene if a flawed individual like everyone else in Thedas (and Earth).

It's really just hard to justify or defend her actions over the years but one thing comes to mind.

"With great power comes great responsibility." For people like us, the most damage (besides murder) we can do is betray family, our employer, or friends with lies, stealing, ect. so of course Celene's actions are extremely heinous in comparison because of the scale. Comparing nations on Earth provide an outlook for me.. there is a lot of wrong doings even by the most progressive nations (current and past) but overall.. the nation's citizens are living decently.

The elves throw a curve ball in it, though. She's trying to keep the status quo for the upper class and noble humans while she wants to push her own agenda for the elves.

Her hand was forced with putting down a Rebellion! She could have lost everything from Noble houses' support and the votes from the council of Heralds for doing nothing and expecting the elves just to walk away.

A rebellion is a rebellion regardless ..except it has involved elves who are treated like crap around the world.. so it spins a message of sympathy for them. I do not justify her actions but she's done the best she can with the hand she was dealt.

To add..

I can't compare races of Earth. We are all human so it doesn't work the same. At most, they are like aliens to me that are not treated as equals in a human claimed land. It may have been in reverse in the Ancient elves time and the tables have turned on them. I really don't know..

I'm only halfway through the Masked Empire, but my first playthrough involved The Celene Briala combo. They obviously still cared for each other. Didn't really know their story, but I felt that much was obvious. Also, it seemed absurd to me to try to avoid a future where Celene was assassinated by helping it happen. The future didn't say anything about Gaspard being as good as better, it explicitly said Celene being assasinated caused Orlais to fall.

 

I'll be back again after I finish reading the book. I still haven't seen anything that Damns Celene anymore than some of Maric's choices damned him. He was no clean King either.

That was also a world where Corypheus was still alive and wreaking havoc, not a world where we killed him. Orlais is doing pretty well in my playthrough where Gaspard is Emperor.

 

That said, I felt reuniting Celene and Briala was really, really uncomfortable as that was not a healthy relationship at all, feelings be damned, particularly because of some things that Celene did (won't spoil cause you haven't finished the book yet).
