Patrick said on twitter that Spirit Blade Is an ability, not a sustained mode.

So basically it's a summoned weapon spell that lasts for some duration of time... yeah, that works.

User

Does Spirit Blade change the auto-attacks of a mage to melee? Like... a sustained mode? Or is it an abilty?

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

Ability. You will see.

"You will see?"  Ugh... now I'm confused again!   xD  That sounds like an active ability, not a weapon that can be used for auto-attacks...  I mean, if auto-attacks were possible, wouldn't he have just said so?

It could still work along the lines of a toggle. Like using it will summon the blade and make you melee till you get out of combat. Skyrim does something similar with bound weapons. When you holster them they disappear and you have to resummon them. If that's the case the disengage button may turn out to be exploitable.

The other option would be to momentarily summon the blade and performing a slash attack, then go back to staff.

So sounds like using a spell, click to cast, animates a quick strike with spirit blade and then wait for cool down...if so then meh got my hopes up for nothing...... :(

He means you will see as in they'll have it featured in gameplay presumably.

Probably.
I'm kind of torn of what I want for the upgrade: make the blade more powerful, or used without cooldown (like the rogue' grappling chain, though I doubt this upgrade will be in).

That's exactly what it sounds like to me too.

That sounds kind of weird though, because if we can't even hit enemies with the staff, why would we want to be in melee range for any prolonged amount of time if we can't actually attack?  If we could mix this in with the DA2 style melee attacks, that would be one thing, but those have been removed from the game.  Is it like a hit and run style or something?  That doesn't sound right...

I don't think it'll last for that short.
Based on how Patrick stated to fight as a KE, I think we'll able to wield it for good aumont of time, though at this point We have to hope to see how it works before release :).

Hopefully I am wrong and it will be a passive/always on............. <_<

Well, Rift Mage, Artificer, and Templar all have 3 actives each... so perhaps KE has a Spirit Blade power slash, a Spirit Blade summon with a duration, and Walking Fortress (whatever that is... it sounds like a KE spell and was mentioned as a proc on a staff, so...)?

Staff melee strikes have been removed? I thought one of the crafting items you could upgrade staffs with were blades.

I understand your problem with KE if the sword isn't always present, but Why you're underwhelmed about RM? It has ever more offensive Spells, including firestorm, which might likely be the Most powerful spell available in the game, in terms of damage (and Considering that Fire Mine already deals 1600% weapon damage...).

From the description of Rift Mage, I guess I was expecting more telekinetic type spells, like Crushing Prison and the like.

2 of the actives are taken up by Stone Fist and Fire Storm, which I don't have much interest in.

so, we'll have to see what the other 2 actives are as well as the passives.

Yeah, I'm sorry to say that the devs said that bow and staff melee attacks are out.  Ranged attacks only.

Wait, so are all the slots on weapons just for decoration or just everything aside from runes? Either way it's a tad disappointing since I figured putting different types of things in those slots would give cool weapon effects.

The different slots will give weapons special abilities based on the materials you use... they won't change the function of the weapon, however, so staves will never gain melee attacks.  A bladed staff might just look that way because of the schematics used...  I don't think you can add blades to a non-bladed staff... you're really just altering the properties of existing designs, not mixing and matching (that might be possible with armor, however).

Ah, okay. I knew that you couldn't add blades onto any old staff at least. I only assumed you could add blades to select ones since in one of the videos that came out one of the weapons they got said it had an empty staff blade slot and I just thought you'd get different looking blades to stick onto them. Oh well, at least I'll be able to give them stats so that's cool.

"One step forward, three steps back" seems to be the general design process for DAI.

So we know it's not a sustained mode.

So either a passive, or an active ability that has a duration(?). With all the stuff that comes with it. Of course, we don't know if that's the only thing they use at melee.

I'm curious of how it works.

maybe the spell is an active ability with 0 cooldown.  so, it functions as another "auto attack" so to speak.

each time you press/click the spell button, the mage slashes with the spirit sword.  and the sword only lasts for the duration of the slash.

since the spell has 0 cooldown, you can keep hitting that sword button, making it like another auto attack button.

thoughts?

A decent idea, but if there is only one animation, that is going to get old really fast... Devil May Cry-style combos would be cool, however...
