So we know it's not a sustained mode.

So either a passive, or an active ability that has a duration(?). With all the stuff that comes with it. Of course, we don't know if that's the only thing they use at melee.

I'm curious of how it works.

Fair point. If it's a passive, it will likely replace auto-attacks with melee strikes, and be summoned whenever you're in combat.

If it's an active ability, who knows?

A decent idea, but if there is only one animation, that is going to get old really fast... Devil May Cry-style combos would be cool, however...

maybe an upgrade to it will let you "chain" attacks together, which open up more animations and effects.

idk.  guess we'll have to see it in action ( or at least read the the official spell description ).

hopefully, in an upcoming vid, we can catch a glimpse of it.

I imagine it would have a cooldown. It will appear for the duration, and it will interact with other abilities of the KE. I don't imagine it having a very long cooldown however.

In a way, you will be able to prolong its duration, or shorten the cd, to a point where you have it when you want it.

I don't think it's gonna be a one-trick-pony, that just slashes. It's probably gonna have utility as well, and secondary effects other than damage.

It could have a cooldown almost as long as the duration. Maybe just to force to spend mana for it, without gimping your other spells, like with a sustained mode that eats mana, and makes you unable to barrier.

I don't know, but i think i will like KE in general.

The problem with a cooldown is that spells are cast using your hand, not your staff... so if I have this blade out and try to cast a spell, would that make it disappear?  If so, is a cooldown really a good idea?

Actually... Energy Barrage is cast with the staff... are all spells like that?  o.O

maybe the spell is an active ability with 0 cooldown.  so, it functions as another "auto attack" so to speak.

each time you press/click the spell button, the mage slashes with the spirit sword.  and the sword only lasts for the duration of the slash.

since the spell has 0 cooldown, you can keep hitting that sword button, making it like another auto attack button.

thoughts?

This is exactly what I was thinking.

eh.  most of the spells I've seen cast look like the mage casts it from his staff, not hands.

I don't think it would disappear, for spells that don't use staff animations.

Maybe you would even cast the spells through the blade.

Dunno.

But yeah, it seemed to me that spells are cast through the staff, not the hand.

edit:  I'm watching a Fallow Mire video where Solas is casting Static Cage with his hand... so.... I dunno.  No cooldown is sounding pretty good to me...  It's not really a hybrid class if we have to wait around to use the blade because we cast a spell too early.

I loved being an arcane warrior in Origins because you had the powers of a mage with the fashionable plate armor and awesome finishing blows of a warrior. The nigh-on indestructibility was also a plus. I am however hoping that the Rift Mage is just as impressive in it's own way as the Knight Enchanter is from what I have heard. Hopefully Bioware will post on the topic of other specializations.

Still, the Knight Enchanter as a specialization seems like something that would only appeal to a player character. For instance, why make Viviene a Knight Enchanter when she could serve as a more specialized ranged mage or be substituted by someone like the Iron Bull or Blackwall?

Yeah, I don't trust the computer AI to be able to handle this... I'm probably going to make her a full on pyromancer.

I am confuse, does the K-E summons spirit weapons to float like the Guardian from GW 2 or it is like Skyrim with conjured Weapons?

Are you being serious? lol

yes.  it was confirmed today by a dev in multiple tweets.

it's a spirit blade/sword that you hold in your left hand, while holding your staff in your right.

and it's an activated ability spell, so the sword will only appear while the spell is active.

beyond that, we don't know how it really works.

?

It is confirmed that the Knight Enchanter creates a blade that they use in their left hand while holding their staff in their right hand, the skill itself is called "Spirit Blade."

So it might be something like Soul Greatsword from Dark souls 2? Because I could work with that.

Good point!  Yes, that will do nicely.

The way Patrick described it i think its an ability that summons a spirit blade for a set duration or is a toggle that drains mana per second or maybe per attack.

IF that's the case then my interest flew out the window for this class.

I was expecting a melee-focused mage and if it is only an activated skil and you still use your staff for range combat while it's on cooldown ugh.

I was expecting a permanent melee-mage hybrid where you fought in melee combat 100% of the time with spells that benefited from this and enhanced your melee combat.

Not a activated spell with a set duration that will run out and have to be recast or drain mana or something.

I agree.  "Melee-oriented mage" sounds to me like someone who stays in melee combat.

And probably it's just one ability that lets you stab somebody when you're low on mana or when they close to personal range.  I really hope I'm wrong.

If it's one ability with a 5 second cooldown that's very different from 30 seconds.

I don't know why everyone is so negative while having it as a passive would be cool the fact that its activated means it will hopefully be much more powerful for its duration than the equivalent passive blade would be.

Having to recast what's meant as the class "defining" spell every 5 seconds or whatever is simply annoying and frustrating. This is something that many mmo's learned the hard way (no one liked casting 5-10 second buffs over and over and over while grouped with other players), that's why most mmo's these days have 30min-hour long buffs so you don't have to constantly keep recasting your skills over and over and over.

Because we didn't want a "mage who occasionally gets into melee range and hits something" and then spends the majority of time like a regular mage at range casting crap with a staff.

We wanted a melee focused mage that goes into melee combat and fights there permanently alongside the Warriors while using magic to enhance his melee fighting.
