Having to recast what's meant as the class "defining" spell every 5 seconds or whatever is simply annoying and frustrating. This is something that many mmo's learned the hard way (no one liked casting 5-10 second buffs over and over and over while grouped with other players), that's why most mmo's these days have 30min-hour long buffs so you don't have to constantly keep recasting your skills over and over and over.
Because we didn't want a "mage who occasionally gets into melee range and hits something" and then spends the majority of time like a regular mage at range casting crap with a staff.
We wanted a melee focused mage that goes into melee combat and fights there permanently alongside the Warriors while using magic to enhance his melee fighting.
It wouldn't be a buff. It would be an attack. And on the console it would mean repeatedly mashing an attack button, which is exactly how the melee works for every class anyway.

yes. it was confirmed today by a dev in multiple tweets.
it's a spirit blade/sword that you hold in your left hand, while holding your staff in your right.
and it's an activated ability spell, so the sword will only appear while the spell is active.
beyond that, we don't know how it really works.
That sounds...cool actually. Very Gandalf!

We dont know the mechanics yet but i'm fairly sure/hopeful we'll spend the majority of our time in melee. Im also hoping we can use regular spells while gandalfing which would be awesome.

Considering that Patrick said his KE was constantly on the frontline, it seems you'll be able to use that ability more then you think.Having to recast what's meant as the class "defining" spell every 5 seconds or whatever is simply annoying and frustrating. hi Patrick, I don't know if you cab answer, but Does the KE actually wield a kind of Summoned sword (as warriors do)?
Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes
Blade pure spirit energy, held in left hand (staff stays in right). Melee attacks. Amazing work by combat folks.
So it's... Dual wielding? So now only warriors can't dual wield at this point. Anyway, that will look pretty badass. Reminds me of the Champion Destiny from Kingdoms of Amalur (was a warrior-mage, or a might-sorcerer using KoA's naming scheme)-

Mind you, you couldn't quite do that in-game. You could equip both weapon types, but only 1 ever appeared at a time (slash with sword and your staff goes into hammer space, attack with staff and your sword went into hammer space).

Relaaaaax, we don't know how it works yet.
It was confirmed by Patrick Weekes, that he was using the KE to tank/front line all the time, so i doubt you just have it for some seconds and then call it a day.
There is no way, a spec defining ability, that makes it deviate from the gameplay of the average Mage, is gonna just be 5 seconds of smacking and then back to running.
Remember that:
1) You won't have many more abilities available. It's 4 of Knight Enchanter(or somewhere around that), its passives, and then another 4. Barrier, Fade Step, an Ice spell to use Ice Armor, and something else. You won't be able to just sit back and nuke with another spell, if you try to be defensive.
2) We only know one ability of the Knight Enchanter, the Spirit Blade. We know from Mike Laidlaw that it encourages you with its abilities to go melee.
Common sense implies that, you will probably be shoehorned into playing a melee character. How exactly they play, will remain to be seen.
You won't have a choice really, you have only 8 abilities. Which kinda makes sense of why they went with 8 available. It makes choices like the melee Mage hybrid more solid, and not generic.
Plus, a strong melee Mage, should have SOME drawbacks. Not be a tank AND nuke everyone from 100 yards at the same time.
P.S. 100% melee, is kinda difficult to measure. You will probably be a hybrid that uses magic to fight melee. I don't think that you need to hit people from range, but that doesn't mean you can't use cc abilities. And those can be used from range as well.
So technically, we are looking at a hybrid. You attack melee, and control the battlefield from range, while supporting your group.
I think, that is.

I hope they demonstrate this soon, it looks to be a very exciting spec, but it is also too vague at this point.

For me, the worries still come down to Vivienne being a KE. I don't know her personally yet, but her personality and even her armor do not say "melee mage".

For the personality, I kind of agree.

Just take the bare minimum in KE to reach her Focus power... maybe a passive here and there... then spend the rest on normal spells. That's my plan.

Maybe something like Tech Armor from Mass Effect? I always thought that was a cool looking effect and it would be interesting if KE had a skill that gave you some magic Fade armor or something that lasted for however long or soaked up however much damage.

Actually I disagree, she seems to be the type that gets in your face and hits you multiple times till you are defeated. As for her armor, well Sera does not look like a Archer to me either so that does not mean much.

I dunno, I think Sera has got the Archer look down pretty well. She's wearing some form of (presumably thick)cloth with an armored chest piece and arm/hand guards to protect from her bowstring.

Well, her nickname is "Iron Lady" so maybe that does mean something. Still, she doesn't seem the type to be oblivious to blood and entrails getting all over her (no matter what magical armor she has). Why would she go on the front lines if she's just going to [grump] about spoiling her Orlesian silks later? And this is why I'm still worried that the KE will be only a part-time melee mage.
And to me, Sera's kit looks straight out of The Hobbit as far as the wood elves go.

Not really, especially the leather armor looks silly to me because leather armor does not even look like that. The protecting on arms and hands is okish. If it was only cloth with some gambeson under it sure or even some mail, like I said Sera doesn't seem like a archer to me, personally it is one of the worst designs they got.

Well, KE is her spec, which means that she underwent the Circle's training program and knows how to fight using the Spirit Blade and whatever else the spec involves... you are free to avoid these skills, however, if you simply cannot picture her using a sword during combat. There are a few skills and upgrades that I plan on skipping because I don't think they fit certain characters even though they are part of the basic classes... I'm sure you can create a decent ranged version of Vivienne, and there might even be a powerful Barrier-type spell in KE that has nothing to do with Spirit Blade (Walking Fortress, perhaps?).

You can wear plate under a robe-like overcoat or whatever, something that floats as you run.
Vivienne can look armored and dressed at the same time. We can even go Nazgul style together. Along with Gandalf style.
Saying that, she didn't give me the impression that she would want to engage melee either. I mean, she might go on a rampage if someone scratches her dresses ![]()
But yeah, now that i know she is a KE, and since she doesn't teach you the spec, i kinda wonder how much will i have her in the party.
Although, that will mostly depend on her personality, as Ice said, you can customize her enough.
