Sounds good as long as they have learned from dao where the arcane warrior was horrendoulsy over powered.

Also, they did: see up, Mike Laidlaw confirming bypass of class weapon restrictions with the summoned sword, and you have the original wording of the Knight Enchanter with "wielding blades of arcane force".

Question: Hi Mike, the new video shown a weapon named Knight-Enchanter greatsword, does this mean KE mages can use swords?

Answer: No.

I'm really excited about a KE Qunari mage. The melee bonus from the qunari, IMO, fits well with a mage who can get up close and personal.

The question was for real swords.

Mages are weapon locked to staves. The way to bypass that, is with the Knight Enchanter, and the Fade Blades you summon, not actual swords to pick up or craft.

It's a skill/spell of the Knight Enchanter. You still can't use normal weapons.

I just hope the summoned spirit blade actually looks cool - since I'm assuming we can't customize the look of the spirit sword like we can a regular sword.

-snip-

So how do you guys think the Knight Enchanter specialization will turn out and what kind of spells will it have?

Personally, summoning swords to use as weapons has always seemed like a really awesome power, so I'm excited to see what they do with it.

I'm hoping we get something akin to Vergil's Summon Swords from Devil May Cry or the Blades spell from Fable.

Examples:

Spoiler

Dude... no, that's exactly what I don't want.  I want to be able to summon a magic sword in my hand that I can hit people with, not... have a bunch of floating blades surrounding me... I want to be a Spellsword not... whatever the person from Fable was.  If that's the route the designers took, then I don't want anything to do with that... I'll probably just go back to warrior if that's the case.

you jelly?  :>

(edit:  Actually, if KE uses a swirling cloud of summoned blades, then I won't give a crap about this or any other mage spec... so go ahead and boo them for now... lol... I'll defend the class once I know for sure how it works.)

You do realize that if I had any interest at all in Firestorm, Stone Fist, etc, I could just choose to be a Rift Mage, right?  Those spells don't really sound that cool to me... :s

Actually, now that you mention it, I'm reminded of how much this game borrowed from Kingdoms of Amalur... I'm hoping that "blades" still means "swords" and not something like the "faeblades" in that game.  To anyone who is unfamiliar, they are... curved blades that are fitted on like... the outside of the forearm, and wielded by spinning around.  It was somewhat fun in that game but also kind of weird.  I'm hoping they didn't do that and just went with swords...

I wouldn't mind that... so long as Fable-style isn't the only option.  However, if a "Bound Weapon" type sword isn't involved, then I'm not interested.

agreed.  I want to wield the spirit blade in my hand and wade into battle with it.

but I also wouldn't mind if one spell had you summoning a multitude of spirit blades then raining them down on the bad guys.  So like Hail of Arrows.....but with magic spirit swords!!  :wizard:

Eh... the combination of a summoned cloud of blades, Blizzard, and a summoned blade in hand would be wonderfully OP.  Sign me up.  ^_^  There are a lot of possibilities here... I'm just hoping they chose the cool ones (lol... the ones that I think are cool anyway...).

that being said.  I wonder how we will go about summoning the spirit blade.

will the spell be an active spell that we turn on and off ( draining mana as long as we use it )?

will we activate the spell and the sword is only available for a short time?

will it be a passive that turns our staff into the spirit sword ( or replaces our staff with the spirit sword ) and thus change the way we auto attack?

not to mention whatever defensive/magic armor spells the KE might have!!

wonder if we can summon a magic shield to go along with our magic sword??

There is no point in an "up close and personal' Mage, if all they do is go melee range and blast lightning from there.

The basic of approaching someone in melee range is that you can hit him from there with something, and can survive the retaliation.

If i'm gonna blast you with fire, i can do it from 100 yards away thanks :P

Obviously, there would be no point to have a floating weapon around you, or one that appears and disappears to hit those around you or in front. Spells can do that fine. Why have swords that float and hit, when storm clouds blast with lightning everyone who approaches you? (and paralyze them at the same time)

The point was to add the spice of melee fighting, as in, with a summoned weapon you wield, to deviate a bit from the other Mage specs.

Spellswords, or Warpriests, or in general Melee Magic hybrids like Eldritch Knights, are extremely popular for a reason :P

If magic was cool like it was in DA:O, I'd be all about casting... sadly, a lot has changed.  Heck, even DA2 had more options....  there's nothing new or unique about summoning a meteor shower.  Blood Magic was unique, but it's gone.  Force Mage was unique, but it's gone.  Spirit Healer?  Both unique and gone.  Support mage?  Gone.  Mage who uses a bunch of random curses and debuffs?  Gone.  Earth/nature spells?  Gone.

KE at least has a chance to feel different from the average run-of-the mill, blast-everything mage, so that's what I'm interested in.  There are 3 other mages on the team who can sit around blasting things from a distance... there is no reason for me to have my PC fill this role.

Knight Enchanter I am hoping can really get into melee combat and fulfill the role of the Berserker/reaver type of a warrior but with a focus on magical abilities.

Always liked playing a hybrid melee/mage but hardly any rpgs really support it without it feeling like they just took a long-range based mage and threw him in armour where you really don't feel like his skills are actually meant for "melee" combat or enhance/benefit that playstyle.

I really hope the KE fits that kind of playstyle.

I guess the closest example I could give would be a Jedi lol! That's what I "picture" when I think of a cool melee mage, being able to leap over people, push/pull them, throw my sword out and have it come back, things that seem built for a melee fighter rather then a long range glass cannon.

I MAY look into Necromancer before just going to Warrior, but that's only if Necromancer is done well and KE isn't a Spellsword.

Otherwise, Helloooo, Templar.

EDIT: Which is the closest i can get to a Spellsword in my opinion, and that's all i want for my first character. XD

Yeah, Holy Smite is pretty close to actual magic, so that's what I'd go for as well... the only real flaw in the warrior is that they have zero ranged capabilities.  I guess I could just throw jars of bees...

I'm really hoping for some melee abilities for the KE, in that you're actually wielding some kind of sword in hand. If it's just a bounch of floating blades I'm not interested in this spec.

I don't think it will work out that well for you. Regardless of what the KE tree does, remember that the majority of your abilities will come from the regular mage tree.
