Best way to show tactical gameplay is play a difficulty that forces tactical gameplay. Besides, they know that if they didn't play on that difficulty that this forum would be filled with complaints about it being to easy and "casual-fied". Hard mode gameplay is a good way to show the game still requires effort and thinking to win.

It also indirectly addresses a concern many have regarding the no healing aspect. In the last combat encounter in today's demo, the entire party did not take any direct damage to their health against an equally leveled (though unremarkable) enemy party.

Although he liberally used the tac cam and paused several times, Mike played it fairly straight up (i.e. no scouting or kiting) and this was on Hard. I hope that shows those concerned with having to go back to camp after every single encounter, that it need not be the case.

And those that think the game will be laughably easy that this is exactly the case :P

Yeah, it's what I noticed too. Mike simply used basic tactics, didn't scout, didn't swich characters out (much) and still came out almost unscathed. Contrast with an early fight, where he was sloppy and let both Sera and the Inquisitor get hit, and they reached critical health levels fairly fast. The game really does reward tactics, positioning, and damage mitigation.

Admitedly a lot of it is thanks to his Inquisitor, who was specced into Barriers big time. But if that's not an example of a good support mage build, what is?

Yeah I wasn't that willing to do nightmare at first without documentation but now if twich was on hard mode then I think I'll be fine figuring out NM on the fly.

That was a relatively simple fight against 3 opponents, though. Would be interesting if he'd gone over the hill to fight the big Duhaine guy or whatever his name was.

Yeah, but he didn't use CC and didn't really take damage. A higher level demanding fight would presumably rely on better crowd control and more powergame oriented builds.

The number of enemies shown is consistently small as well. Crowd control seems very accessible, especially for mages. It seems to me that 2 mages with 1 point in barrier and the fear from the fire tree will be able to faceroll mooks. And for every encounter that is not gated you can just defeat it in detail.

I fear that the result will be like Skyrim, where come end game with enchanted gear and blacksmithing, even on legendary you just destroy everything and take no damage. For skyrim this kinda works cause to reach that point it's extremely difficult and requires a lot of knowledge of not only game mechanics but farming locations, types of enemies and stuff like that. This doesn't seem to be the case with DAI.

What I hope - seeing that spirit blade gives bonus damage against guard and barrier - that enemies will have reasonable mitigation we have to peel off as well (at least on NM). Something more tactical than ME2 on hardcore (and less tedious than insanity).

Yeah i would really really preferred it, if i could summon it in my hand and run around holding it, not just summon it for attacking with it and then gone.

I admit that at least i like being able to have consecutive attacks with it, and it's sustainable, but, why not have it in your hand and then attack? Not just have in your hand just before attacking and then bye :P

Man, it was so close to be perfect. Now it's just good. Aesthetics matter more than mechanics some times.

I wished i could give you more than one like....So here is +1000 virtual likes..... B)

I've noticed blade costs 10 mana per attack while active. So it  could be autocasted after all ?

I'm thinking that when spirit blade is active your auto attack uses the sword and when its not it uses the staff.

It is. You toggle it on, and if you attack someone, you will walk up to them and SLASHY SLASHY. You toggle it off, and pew pew staff.

There is also a passive more down in the tree and left, that has a sword like the spirit blade, with a shield, but i don't know what that's about.

wait.......spirit blade is a toggle that replaces your auto attack while active?

I thought each time you clicked the button, you did the slash attack?

It doesn't look all that great, but it's cheap and it seems powerful... I'm glad they made it a detonator... that's what I was hoping for.

I think you just hold down the Spirit Blade button the same way that auto attack is press and hold now.

You take that back. It looks awesome.

The only downside is that we have to have a staff equipted at all.

If you disable auto attacks in options, you need to press a button to attack.

@Icy, it looks nice imo, i would just want it to linger more in your hand. Granted, it might actually do so, but Mike didn't really engage too much in melee, because he was cycling through characters.

Also i don't know if that passive with another spirit blade in the tree has something to do with a different visual or an extra one.

Did we ever get that confirmed or are we still theory crafting?

It says 10 mana per attack while active, so it's a sustained mode. I presume. It doesn't make sense as a description otherwise.

So, I could replace stuff attack with blade and not pressing "1" button all the time ?

I thought smth like that.

Where do you get that info. Cameron's Lee post on autoattacking didn't mention any toggle. There is nothing to suggest that the skill will transform into a sustained ability other than a tooltip description that may be misleading.

Wait, didn't they say you can disable auto-attacks and hold down buttons to attack? Can't remember where i read that.

After Reading in the forum I thought the Animation was really slow :P. I think it has an average speed, which I think is due to balance, since it's a powerful ability you can use for a relatively low cost and no cooldown.

Lee said you can press a button to perform the basic attack and hold the button to chain multiple basic attacks. Nothing about a toggle.
