Lee said you can press a button to perform the basic attack and hold the button to chain multiple basic attacks. Nothing about a toggle.

Mike also said you can use the left mouse button for attacking in the video. I assume auto attack exists as well. Not that i mind too much with whatever.

After Reading in the forum I thought the Animation was really slow :P. I think it has an average speed, which I think is due to balance, since it's a powerful ability you can use for a relatively low cost and no cooldown.

I would guess the reason for this is because its so friggen powerful. 300% weapon dmg alone is enough for me, not to mention the bonus damage to barrier and guard.

I initially thought it was pretty slow, but the Twitch stream was just laggy... :/  It's actually not that bad.  Any faster and it would probably have been OP.  Well, more OP.

ah. that's what I thought. it doesn't replace the default staff attack, right?

I don't think so, but I don't have a source or anything... this is mainly speculation.

It isn't a sustained, for sure. Patrick Weekes confirmed that yesterday, and, on top of that, sustainables have little arrows on the edge of their diamonds. So it seems like a short-term ability at best. Not a toggle. It just runs out.

Patrick Weekes ‏@PatrickWeekes  Oct 11

@User Blade pure spirit energy, held in left hand (staff stays in right). Melee attacks. Amazing work by combat folks.

User ‏@LieutenantKurin  Oct 11
@PatrickWeekes @User Does Spirit Blade change the auto-attacks of a mage to melee? Like... a sustained mode? Or is it an ability?

Patrick Weekes ‏@PatrickWeekes  Oct 11
@LieutenantKurin @User Ability. You will see.

Probably it will work the same way. Press it once, it does a basic attack, hold it and it chains multiple. I think the spirit blade will work the same way. It has no cooldown so you will probably be able to hold the key and chain attacks.

If it's an ability, that drains 10 mana per attack while active, then maybe you need to hold down its button for it to function?

Probably.

Now i really wonder what that passive was, that had another spirit blade in the icon down the tree.

I just took that to mean each time you use the spirit blade, it costs 10 Mana instead of a cooldown.

I am pretty sure you can toggle it. It would be very uncomfortable pressing the button each time.

Each swing costs 10 mana, yes.  So I guess if the button is held, it subtracts 10 every time you swing.

It really can't be sustained if it works with other spells like one of our more industrious fellow forumites was discussing earlier.

That it works like every other spell is quite possibly a huge boon to the KE.

Unless you're not in combat, then you can swing it all you want and it won't do a thing to mana. I watched that very carefully.

I still wish you could slash with your right hand instead.

You mean like how Gandalf holds his sword and staff?

I was chatting with Icy Magebane just now...

& during the chat I found that the Knight Enchanter can be so much more than just a frontline spellsword like character.

I mean....

Spirit Blade + Fade Cloak + Fade Step + Fire Mine + Frost Glyph + Static Cage + Barrier + Mind Blast = Mage Rogue zapping around the battlefield, slashing people with magic swords and stunlocking them with glyphs and cages. Mind Blast to drop aggro.

OR

Spirit Blade + Fade Cloak + Fade Step + Winter's Grasp + Immolate + Chain Lightning +  Energy Barrage + Barrier = Mage Rogue zapping around the battlefield, slashing people with magic swords and taking them out with powerful elemental effects.

IMO, Knight Enchanter has a strong potential. You can either be a frontline mage fighter OR a mage rogue / mage vanguard of sorts OR a defensive mage that just uses abilities like Spirit Blade, Group Heal, Fade Step as "oh crap" abilities.

KE is a breath of fresh air from the traditional nuker/healer/support roles in DA.

Mage-Vanguard for the win ?

In Mass Effect we had = Biotic Charge + Nova + Weapon.

In DA:I = Fade Step + Static Cage / Mind Blast / Elemental Glyph + Spirit Blade. Fade Cloak at the ready in case SHTF.

At the same time, I think this showcases one of the KE's potential pitfalls we'll have to watch out for... which is being very, very hungry. Hungry for mana.

Gaming mouse. Way, way better. You need extra buttons to keybind to make it work. Then it's as easy as pressing your thumb against the mouse.

That's why I believe KE + electricity (esp. +dmg at lower mana) + spirit (enough for barrier) + winter (for mana regen) is the way to go if you want to use the KE for damage.
