That still means if I find an awesome suit of armor, I can't wear it because it's actually plate armor, not robes with the appearance of plate armor.
Right, because it would be quite silly if you could.

"Wield," does not mean, "hold in your hand and use." Figured I'd point that out.
So what else does it mean?

And yet you can wear something that looks just like it?
Armor should be stat-restricted. Except wait, we can't raise our own stats any more. Want something except robes and a stick? Sucks for you, get back in the box.

"1.to exercise (power, authority, influence, etc.), as in ruling or dominating.2. to use (a weapon, instrument, etc.) effectively; handle or employ actively.3. Archaic. to guide or direct.4. Archaic. to govern; manage."So, four meanings and only one uses the word "handle."

You can't see how "guide or direct" would be applied to magical blade of arcane energies? In other words mages wield there magical powers to cast spells. Does this mean they hold them in their hands and swing them around? Is this how one would wield political power?
Right, now list the other meanings of the word that are obviously listed where you got that one. The "1." is right there.
I only other one was to....
Same meaning different use of the word.

So you think it's the Fable-style "Blades" spell instead of a summoned weapon? It's possible, but I don't think they would have used the word "wield" if they were referring to that. Perhaps "control" or "summon" would have been more appropriate. "Wield" has a very specific meaning when talking about weapons, and most people are going to think of that rather than the more abstract "wielding of arcane power." That's fine when you are talking about traditional magic, but not when describing blades that are used by a melee-based mage...
The phrasing of the descriptions, the comparisons between Arcane Warriors, and the numerous references to "melee mages" seems to indicate that the KE will be using summoned weapons that they hold in their hands.

Actually wield does not have a very specific meaning with weapons. Also, I have no idea how the KE will use it's blades, I was pointing out a false presumption based on the presumed use of a word. It could be either, we don't know.
It's a mage and mages wield magic. So the use of the word wield (which is not there anymore, anyway) is highly appropriate in either case.
Making the presumption the the use of the word "wield" when referring to "arcane baldes of force" means actually holding them is actually the more unlikely use of the meanings based on the context given.
EDIT: If I were to hazard a guess, I would think the the KE would direct a floating sword/s of magic rather than actually holding them in his hands as that would be a fairly boring given that we already have classes the do that and that is what the Arcane Warrior does. If that is what the KE was meant to do, why would they change the name?
I do want KE to wield the Spirit Blade. I just prefer to be pessimistic to avoid disappointment.
I'm hoping that "spirit blade" means "spirit damage." At the very least, it should take on the elemental properties of the staff we were holding when we cast it... but yes, I understand not wanting to get your hopes up. I'm ready to jump ship if I'm not happy with the KE's "arcane blades," so it's not a huge deal for me I guess...
Hopefully we find out before the game is released though... I don't want to learn that I picked the wrong class several hours in. xD

Ok some points.
1) Mages can wear plate, real plate, deal with it. This is done through both crafting real heavy plate from materials, or light armor that looks heavy because schematics, or light armor that looks heavy and is based on cloth ingredients. Also, we don't know if KEs actually have a passive that completely bypass armor restrictions. Armors are restricted by level also, not stats.
2) How do you bypass Class restrictions to hold weapons other than staves, when you can't hold your summoned weapon. If it's floating around you, you're not bypassing anything. You are just controlling a spell. Why advertise that spell as the epitome of Melee Mages that fight up close and personal, if it's just a camouflaged lightning bolt? Why have it as a summon, when Necromancer is the summoner.
3) Wield, does not imply only direct, it also implies hold, it's talking about an object, an arcane blade, not a vague power. The chances are it is held, although floating is not out of the question. Just something that apparently a lot of folks don't like.
They don't like it, because there is no point to tease people with a Melee Mage, and have them just be normal Mages that only summon a floating Mordenkainen's sword that attacks people close to you. Storm clouds do the same. You don't need more of the same old.
So yeah, it's not 100% certain that we actually hold the weapon.
It would just suck royally if we just have another slap in the face with a spec that teases something it can't deliver. If fighting with a summoned sword means that, you just direct a floating weapon, then why not say "control a flying summoned weapon" in the first place? Why make people expect they are bypassing the restriction like that, when you know they want it? And by the way, Mike already said yes in "bypassing it". RAPTR combat Q&A.
If we are to stand and TRY to understand what summon or wield means, then whatever.
Weekes said they "fight close range with a summoned energy blade" If that is not an implication that they fight with it, what is?
Why not just say " Hey folks, we know you wanted to fight with a sword, and we told you in the combat Q&A that you bypass weapon restrictions with the KE blade, but guess what, you can't actually hold it! Sucks eh?"
The meaning is either.
Is there any kind of point, to have a sword imitate what Necromancers can do, or the simple Storm tree can?
No way.
Does it deviate from the normal play style and the other specs, just like the Necromancer is a summoner, and the other a nuke?
No, again.
So, i'm just going to assume that they actually hold it.
Melee Mage means fighting through the melee standard process of actually attacking yourself. It would be just BAD, if you had something attack FOR you.

hi Patrick, I don't know if you cab answer, but Does the KE actually wield a kind of Summoned sword (as warriors do)?
Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes
Blade pure spirit energy, held in left hand (staff stays in right). Melee attacks. Amazing work by combat folks.

Thanks for asking... it sure beats speculating, that's for sure... xD Now that that's settled, I'm 96% committed to KE (the other 4% is a just random chance that I change my mind at the last minute...).
YES! Gandalf style is awesome. I now know that i am a KE for my first character. Best day ever (Until the 18th of November anyway.) ![]()
