That sounds pretty neat. I may end up playing as a mage in the future, in that case.

It could be an on and off mode, without draining mana.

We'll find out i guess, but the good news arrived, so /hype!

Yeah, there are some toggled modes.  They drain mana/stamina, however... they don't reserve a portion like in the old games.

So it's basically like Spell Might in DA:O?

Yes, basically this is my feel of the combat right now. It's also looking like (with the lowered damage rate per encounter and the premium on damage mitigation) that using ranged attacks and choke-points becomes even more effective as a way to manage health and potions without having to backtrack all the time.

I'm interested to see how cc will work. Most encounters I've seen are small. 3-5 men. I suspect that having 4-5 single target CCs lasting up to 10-15 seconds will be common place. Seems to me like just ccing everyone and focus firing will be a free win scenario, at least for the early part of the game.

I actually disliked DA:O rogues because of how much they had to be micro'd just to get into position to backstab, since you had to first point behind the target, then wait to make sure you actually went behind the target (using behind loosely here assuming you upgraded the backstab range) and then click to attack.

I found that the best way to do it is to target the enemy and then sent the rogue behind him. If the enemy is highlighted, when the rogue reaches the place, will adjust the position and start attacking automatically. Still gives me headaches after a few hours but at least I don't have to watch him walk around like a turtle.

No, I mean they actually drain mana per second... Blizzard for example can be toggled on and off, and drains 5 mana per second.  The cooldown is 24 seconds... if I recall correctly, Spell might just increased fatigue and reserved a % of mana...

Not even that.

The AoE circle of pain that the Reaver uses just does damage to you over time, doesn't it? Not draining mana/stamina

Stealth is also a toggled mode, but it doesn't drain anything. It just ends when you deal damage to something

Nah, Spell Might drained 3 mana per second too

Shimmering Shield drained 8

I don't remember what Haste drained

I specifically remember balancing my Mana/Stamina regen per second against keeping Spell Might and Shimmering up, heh

I've been imagining blue in my head, but I never thought about how that's probably wrong

Do you think it'd be green instead? Green seems to be the fade-y color

What if it changes color based on your staff element?

I don't remember that at all... that's odd.... well in that case, yeah, it's like Spell Might. xD

The Spirit icons are green, Mind Blast is green... Spirit Blade is most likely green.

I disabled party-movements because it annoyed me when party members went lollygagging after targets so I never got to use rogues that way. I just didn't like them at all in DA:O - I rolled with either 1 warrior and 3 mages or, if I wanted to actually (mildly) challenge myself after I learned the mechanics, 1 warrior, Leliana as the trap/chest opening unit, and 2 mages.

I agree with you on CC. So far, none of the videos use it effectively. And it's all 3rd person action combat gameplay on the console, which makes 3-5 enemies seem like a challenging but in a tactical view with 4 party members you can pretty much create a killzone without even bothering to use chokepoints. That's how it was for me in DA:O. I still remember how hilariously and comically easy it was to just obliterate my way through the deeproads by interchangeably mass paralyzing and fireballing the darkspawn into oblivion.

Well, the Inquisitor's trademark is glowly-green-hand so... blue?

:(

If it makes you feel better, I also imagined and would prefer blue (my favorite color)... :/

As long as it isn't physical damage though... the color isn't a huge problem for me.

Most comical situation in DAO had to be Arl Howe's estate. By then mage had all the worthwhile spells from the list, plus one dip into arcane warrior for wade's medium armor. Essentially I pulled the whole guard, stuffed them into the janitor closet and nuked the **** out of them. Did the same with Ser Cauthrien and her archers.

That's roughly how I think KE will play out. ^^

I wonder if the Spirit Blade's attacks gain benefits from your staff.

Can hits from the blade trigger a "2% chance to gain Walking Fortress on attack" ability? What about stuff like lifesteal?

This is probably one of the reasons we can't unequip the staff...  I was actually just thinking about that.  Since we can't customize the blade, it will be unreasonably inferior to crafted melee weapons if we don't get the benefit of the staff's specials... also... what determines the base damage of this thing?  The staff's damage?  Attributes are kind of fixed so it's probably not the Magic stat...

hi Patrick, I don't know if you cab answer, but Does the KE actually wield a kind of Summoned sword (as warriors do)?

Patrick Weekes ‏@PatrickWeekes
Blade pure spirit energy, held in left hand (staff stays in right). Melee attacks. Amazing work by combat folks.

So the KE isn't a "tank" like AW. But there are defensive spells? I'm afraid to go melee as mage because of the "fragility"

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

In my AssQuisitor playthrough, I was a front-line fighter as KE. Did just fine!

My very first run, it was BM/AR (I didn't learn the infinite casting earth shattering potential of BM/SH until later), so after I curbstompped Ser Cautherin and got to the endgame then came back to the forum, I couldn't understand what the hell people were on about when they talked about this awesome rescue scene. For a good hour I just thought my game was broken.

Oh, hey, can we choose the color and the hand we wield the spirit blade?

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

No. It's strictly a spell effect, not an item that stays with you.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but... this was something I always hated hated hated about my Lore Master in LotRO.  The sword should be in the right hand!!!

But it's better than no sword at all, I'll give you that.  :)

This sounds like active abilities rather than auto-attacks... eh... darn, I just have so many questions.
