I am at my wits end with this. I have tried everything I can find and it still won't work. I am getting an error message that just doesn't make sense.

Here are the results of my system scan

To make a few correction, I have it running in compatibility mode and as administrator, I have 4 GBs of RAM, and my Video Card is only 512MB of VRAM. I have tried the Disable Vertex fix. I even tried the Data Execution Prevention fix I found on reddit. I installed the game as administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP 3. Any help would be much appreciated. I apologize if something like this has been posted before

Is this the Steam or the Retail version? Try a reinstall and see if that helps.

You can run the game as the gog version now... works fine on windows 8.

You have a compiler issue in the 1st screenshot and your settings (2nd screenshot) are ok to run the game.

The retail version will not install onto 8 because the installer doesn't know what windows 8 is.

I hate steam so some one else can answeer questions about that.

I have both the retail and gog versions running on my asus sonicmaster (8 and 8.1 dual boot) laptop with out issue but intel g-cards are easy to play with.

The glitch I experience with this game seems to be when I kill enemies, the game will sometimes crash. Actually it crashes ALOT.  I have a sort of work around, where i save after EVERY enemy death (Yes, increadibly time consuming and irritating!) but i managed to get through the first couple of worlds, but now there's a cutscene that makes it crash (calo nord ambushing you after finding the star-map on tatooine).  I've tried just about EVERYTHING possible to fix it without learning how to mod the game to change the code myself!. The vertex option, CPU affinity, compatability, admin mode, screen size, windowed mode.... I'm really starting to think I may be the only person with this particular bug!

KOTOR Version: Retail 1.03

CPU: Core i7-2600k @3.Ghz

RAM: 8GB

Mobo: Gigabyte something or other

GPU: Nvidia GTX760

Windows 8.1 Pro

Sounds like the dirrectX buffer is set too small but that is set at install time so how did you install the game?

p.s. gog.com has star wars knignts for about $15 that installs without issue and your game save do carry over... don't install any windows games to the "c: programs files" folder.

well... the normal way. ran the installer from the disc then played it.

Well I have managed to get through the game finally! So here is my fix to windows 8.1 issues:

Obtain a copy of VMware

Create new image

Install Vista or XP to the image

Install KotOR on the image

Transfer your save game

Play... kinda... The graphics didn't work at all, all it showed was just the wireframes but it let me get passed the cut scene.

This method also worked on the tarentatek crash!

You can't actually play the entire game this way, as you can't read any dialog and have to guess what your responses are, but if you only use it to advance your game through those 2-3 scenes that are glitching it may be worth it to keep playing this AWESOME game!

Just adding tags to make this page easier to find. hopefully this helps someone out of a jam: Knights of the old republic, crash, windows, 8, random, bug, fix, issue, win8, win8.1

Well the GOG version works for all modern platforms and no need to jump through hoops, only downside you got to buy it again (which I happily did) Love this Bioware classic.

Edit:

ussnorway beat me to the punch.

All I did was turn off the Frame Buffer in the options and it did it for me. Though, I wish there was a way I can install components of windows 7 onto my 8.1 so it could use the Frame Buffer effects. Steam version, in case you ask.

Hi all. First time visitor/poster to the boards, hoping to solve this problem that has been vexing me of late.

I owned copies of KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 and played the heck out of them on my old Dell Dimension 2400 tower.

After hearing about gog.com and the selling of the updated versions of both games, I jumped at the opportunity to buy and download these old favorites. This is where my problems began.

I purchased, downloaded, and installed both games to my laptop. After downloading was completed, I clicked on the icon and hoped to begin playing. Unfortunately, the game crashes back to the desktop the second it gets to the main menu (which is missing the character standing next to it.) and I receive a game has stopped working notice.

Here are the specs for my laptop:

- Dell Inspiron 17 5000 Series (5748)
- Windows 8.1 (64-Bit)

- Intel Core i5 4210U CPU @ 1.70 GHz
- Intel 5500 HD Graphics Card
- 8 GB Memory

- 1 TB HD

What, if anything, can I do to get these to work?

Also, how do I go about using the Restored Content mods on the gog.com version of the game.

Thanks all!
