It depends on where you look for feedback.
Bear in mind that the tone on this forum has changed over the last 6 months.
I've noticed less ME3 endings and DA2 caves jokes as the hard work BioWare have put in on DAI has been apparent.
BioWare has a long and credible history so to say you are only as good as your last game is not entirely true.
However, the ME3 endings were certainly controversial and DA2 was limited in its ambition.
Do BioWare have a point to prove?
Yes they really do (though I also think they will prove it).
As we've seen on this thread, there are two types of concern, 'fan concerns' and 'gamer concerns'.
The fan concerns include:
- Qunari hair
- Multiplayer
- Romance options
- 8 abilities
- The Hero of Ferelden
These are fan concerns from people who are pretty much assured to be buying the game anyway, and that concern stems from a passion for the franchise being the game they want to play.
The second category of grumbles are from the gaming public and are mainly as have been listed above:
- Buy nothing from evil EA
- Won't touch Origin.
- Burned by Mass Effect 3/Dragon Age 2 so will not buy.
- Witcher 3 is better
- This game is trying to make me gay
- A hack n' slash game, not a REAL RPG
Many of these come from the bitter and twisted minority. Most of these are concerns that it is impossible to have a sensible discussion about as they are grounded in simplistic or naive thinking or prejudice. The issues with ME3/DA2 would be in soccer terms a 'bit of an own goal', but the rest can only be addressed by showing and releasing a great game.
As an example, Shadow of Mordor has got significant acclaim (releasing on PS3 and Xbox 360 on the same day as DAI) yet having played it (and it is good - I 100%ed it in 3 days). It is excellent at what it does do, but it is very limited in so many areas compared to DAI.
It's all going to be down to the quality of the game and the buzz behind it when the review embargo lifts.
