I just realized...Hawke is returning and we have a CC to recreate her but she'll have to change to one of these hairstyles D:

That is if Hawke will actually be customized via a CC. Bioware has been really vague about Hawke and his never outright said that there would be another in-game Character Creator.

I counted at least 4 hairs available for that female elf with receding hairlines (most notable at the temples). Why? What possible reason is there for a bunch of people sitting around a drawing board to decide on making a bunch of the options include male pattern baldness when hair was going to be a shared resource between sexes? It feels as if the female inquisitor was a distant second in their consideration for hair. Even some of the longer styles show a conspicuous wedge of baldness at the temples. Wouldn't it have been a much better bet to, you know, not do that? Sure, females and males have the same number of options, but a significant portion of them are clearly designed to be exclusively-male options, or styles that have a huge sex bias.

Example:

1-create-inquisitor.jpg

This could have easily been a sex-neutral hairstyle. But the mesh seems specifically designed with males in mind, with no real thought for women. There's really no excuse for making a hairstyle like this be so skewed in favour of one sex, and yet still take up one of the female hair slots. And it would have been so easy not to include that receding hairline. Why would you put that in? Why spend resources crafting an option so as not to fit half of all characters? I find it baffling.

Hair for this game has been a bit disappointing.

I think I can just about live with what we have though, just about.

Agree. This hair is just... terrible. It could be decent, but no, they decided to shave some area and leave bald triangle on in. Just... LOL

The way I see it, you have a finite number of zots to spend on customization, across all race/sex combinations. And for the most part, there seems to be a fairly equal representation. But then they get to hair, and it all goes to hell.

Now, with limited resources, it would seem fair to either spend all hair-allotted zots on gender/sex-neutral options that are available to all, or you could spend half of your hair-allotted zots on males, and half on females, so that each has unique sex-specific options, but with half the total options available in the first method. Or you could, you know, throw any pretense of equality out the window and give all sexes access to the same styles, of which many are clearly intended for men and don't fit female characters who would rather not express male pattern baldness.

To be fair, this appearance isn't man-exclusive:

but yes, it's not universal and not something you'd commonly see with younger women. The really weird part is, they could easily fix that by creating a variant with same hair model and fuller coverage for the trimmed part, but instead they went and made like a dozen different shaved head patterns...

Some of the hair styles are down right awful. But there are at least two or three that I like and I guess I'm satisfied enough with that. I may struggle a bit on my second play through when I make a female Elf, though (I'm coming for you, Solas). I think the hair styles are actually quite poor in general when it comes to designing a female character. I'll make it work though. Somehow.

Oh dear. I did not notice the receding hairlines in some of the styles before your post. Now it's impossible to unsee. I have even less options than I thought.

*Sigh* I get the need to use same hairstyles for both male and female characters. Hell, I even encourage that. Buns and braids for all sexes, please! But making hairstyles designed only for male physique and using them as unisex styles is just wrong, especially with this few styles to choose from.

Come on Bioware, if you go unisex, do it properly.

Ugh, you're probably right.  Unless we keep her as default.  She still has her iconic hair in the trailer.

The default Hawke has the pixie cut from the CC, for both male and female Hawke.

As for the receding hairline vs not receding debate... That picture of Amber Rose is a good example of a slight widow's peak, which people of any sex and age can have. Widow's peak's are genetic I believe and do not change over time or are in relation to aging. It's simply a subtle curve of an otherwise pretty straight hairline (comparatively). Receding hairlines however are in a sharp M shape, where the receding hair is so far back it's like two V's (M shape altogether) on either side of the head. I would say at least THREE of the hairstyles I saw within CC illustrated a receding hairline/male pattern baldness**. Again, when making a female inquisitor this may speak to some people's female inquisitor and props to them, however, for most it will feel like we are being cheated 3 slots because it is such an EXTREME rarity outside of the male sex.

**EDITED to include examples of (what i consider) male pattern baldness/male specific hairstyles :

ScreenShot2014-11-06at102949AM_zps7e6cf0ScreenShot2014-10-14at101135PM_zpsfad9ca

Again, all for inclusiveness, but not when it feels like so much of what I'm looking at here is heavily one sided towards traditionally "masculine" styled looks. Just incredibly frustrating, and tbh a part of me is dreading CC because of it.

Today of course is DAI review day and this has helped me get sooooo excited again for this game (after the underwhelming CC hair buzz kill)- and from majority of what I've read, DA:I is gonna be a masterpiece. Been getting so emotional over it, and so proud and happy for BioWare!!

And reading through several of them, I came across this little gem, and felt it definitely needed to be included on this thread...

"This is a glorious looking game… aside from many characters' painfully plastic hair and hilarious joke shop beards and moustaches."

lol YASSS. VALIDATION. ;P

Let's keep pushing this, in hopes for some appearance DLC. Mirror of Transformation, with a variety of new hairstyles (and hey why not) casual outfits for skyhold**. I would gladly pay $10 or so for that.

**EDIT: also some storage for your inquisitor is needed as well apparently according to reviews. So eyyy gimme some treasure chests at skyhold as well in this bundle and I'll be set lol ;T

IF they add options later like, say, Dragons Dogma did, I'm going to be PISSED OFF if I have to pay for it. That sort of thing should've been added to begin with.
