Hello!

I've recently started to have a hand at the attempt at building my first real area with the toolset. It's going to be pretty big,  20x20, with loads of trees... however I seem to hear that there's a rumor that you shouldn't be adding too many different types of trees or it will cause issues. I haven't had any such problems so far, but then again I understand not everyone has my machine.

I was wondering how many different types of trees one should limit an area to?

Also, does this cap include all types of bushes, shrubs, plants, etc?

Thanks for reading in advance!

Obsidian's documentation suggested using no more than 6 (I think) tree seeds total per area for performance. With more modern computers and my focus on single player and not PW areas, I've gone higher (20?). The seed limit includes everything in the "tree" tab, so that includes bushes etc. Remember you can always scale trees as well to add diversity, though you can not rotate or tint them. There is a tree randomizer plugin that will randomize tree seeds for an entire area at once, you just tell it how many seeds to use.

Six is definitely too low I've gone way above that if you include bushes and plants, maybe I got away with it because all I changed was the scale and not the actual seed bit that makes different versions of the same tree. You might want to change them ( using kamal's trick ) so they don't move about in the wind if there are a lot of them all together as synchronised swaying can look a bit daft.

I have an older 2008 machine, and speed trees is just not the primary cause of game-lag.

6 is way too low. Try 50  ;)

I hate seeing things like that row of identical Mediterranean cypresses in the OC.  Please, please use different seeds for plants that are right next to each other.

What is this plugin you speak of that fills an area with trees? It sounds quite handy to have!

I guess I wasn't clear. The plugin doesn't fill an area with trees, it assigns x number of random seeds to trees you placed in an area, and can also do randomized size scaling. It's very handy as you can just run it over and over (it works quickly) until you get a look you are happy with.
