Was wondering how many people besides myself were going to completely start off playing on nightmare ?
In my experience all dragon age games in the past have been not too difficult for me expect for DA2.  DA2 was a chore for me because of the waves of enemies that surround combined with friendly fire made it just not fun for me to play on nightmare as origins did.  I love challenges but good ones and with the changes to the combat system this time around I am very excited as this will be my first bioware game where I plan to start off on the highest difficulty settings.  After my first playthrough I will try a solo nightmare run.

So how many of you out there are planning something similar to what I am going to do?

P.S this is my first post ever, but been lurking the forums for 2 years now.

I think I'll start on a lower difficulty due to the new system, and increase it when playing.

Honestly, I think it's a terrible idea. Nightmare isn't meant for a first playthrough.

And welcome aboard!

I will try, but if I get totally b****-slapped I'll tone it down a notch until I find something comfortable for the first run.

I started normal in DA:O, and hard in DA2. Though, I cannot imagine the utter misery of attempting a blind playthrough of DA2 on Nightmare.

I'll do my first playthrough on normal.  I'll definitely do a nightmare playthrough once I get the hang of the game's new mechanics.

Even though I take my time exploring, I really want to see the story elements of the game, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have the patience to do nightmare first.

Honestly in privious games it was more of friendly fire that was getting me than nightmare, other games i tend to start off on the hardest settings but this will be my first bioware game doing so.  I dont mind dieing a lot to learn I have played mmos with permadeath and loved it even played origins with peradeath mod after beating it atleast a couple times on nightmare before. but from all the gameplay vids it seems planning more so than randomness is going to be the make or break with nightmare mode this time around.  I love that :)

Nope, normal or hard. Depends how hard it is, i don't like to get bogged down by gameplay the first time i am experiencing the story of a bioware game.

I don't know.. Thing is.. When you play on the hardest difficulty you usually have to meta-game, but I wanty a challenge. So I will probably play my first playthrough on hard.

If you want a challenging first experience then start on hard mode. Don't start off on the highest difficulty, unless getting destroyed is enjoyable for you.

I did DA2 on hard first time I tried nightmare at first but in prologue I got smashed hard the Friendly fire combined with waves of enemies and completly different mechanics from origins was just oo much for me.  which is funny because at the end of the day now I can do solo nightmare runs with any class in that game.  This time I want to try and stick it out.

I've played each dragon age game on nightmare my first playthrough. I'm sure I'll do the same. It makes bosses actually difficult rather than just long.

I don't know if that's such a good idea because nightmare is mostly just a 'everything is unfair and everyone wants you dead' mode. And this time the game is harder than all previous ones. So starting on that mode right away in a completely new combat system?...Eh. We've seen that the combat really is a lot more challenging and with a lot fewer healing methods.

Why not just try hard mode first? The achievements probably won't care about the difference between hard and nightmare mode if you care about that sort of thing. But if you're just really set on nightmare, then go for it. I personally wouldn't even consider it for a first playthrough since I'll want to see the next story bit as soon as possible.

I think the biggest problem with DA2's Nightmare is that one's success is governed 100% by burden of knowledge, rather than one's ability to grasp effective tactics and adapt to changing conditions in combat. I think this is a shitty way to balance combat and add challenge to a game.

My reason for starting DA:I on Nightmare is mostly as a test to see how Bioware have changed their methods in scaling difficulty and balancing combat.

I would start off on Hard. Nightmare on first playthrough is too punishing and might actually affect your enjoyment of the game. You should be able to pick a class and form the team YOU want for your first playthrough to maximize your enjoyment of the story and gameplay. When you're on Nightmare, you worry more about choosing the most effective build and team. You may have to go with a build and team you don't like. So definitely go hard for your first playthrough, unless you're a total glutton for punishment.

I'll be playing on Hard my 1st playthrough and then Nightmare my 2nd.

I'd see myself starting on normal and gradually increasing to nightmare on the first playthrough. Might take a several hours or even days.

I could only handle nightmare once I figured out the nuances of the combat system and the right strategies, otherwise it would become a really irritating chore to constantly reload.

I'll play on Nightmare...on second or third playthrough. I NEED TO LEARN THE DAMN GAME BEFORE I MAKE DESPERATE ATTEMPTS AT BEATING MYSELF INTO A BLOODY PULP.

Yes that is what I am most excisted about too.  I have high hopes for the combat scalling.  Everything talked about so far seems right up my alley

In da2 it looked dumb .. Swinging your 2hander on a demon ass for 10 minutes before it crumbled. SO I always played this game on normal lol.

Take that and that and that and that and that and that ... Oh man only 1 % Hp GONE

That's what I intend to do, might be a bad idea, maybe I will suffer! But victory without risk is triumph without glory!

But from a more practical standpoint, I played DAO and DA2 on Nightmare (minus a 1st playthrough on Normal in Origin) and that how I liked to play the most so I assume it will be the same for Inquisition.
But I will have no qualm in dropping the difficulty if I don't enjoy the combat.

Both DAO and DAII (oh and all the Mass Effect games) I was able to finish on Nightmare first try on release. Loved the experience even though some fights were horrible ofcourse. But it gives sooo much satisfaction when its this hard, plus it makes the first play through take so much more time. So yeah I'm going Nightmare on first play with Inquisition as well!
