It all depends on how they have implemented friendly fire this time around.   Normally, yep, I crank the difficulty to max from the get go.   However, DA2 so poorly implemented friendly fire while at the same time making the difficulty settings inflexible that I never got to play it on nightmare.

If friendly fire is implemented in such a way that lame-brained AI controlled members don't wipe out your own party by swinging their 2 handed swords around my unarmored mages, then I will use nightmare.   Alternatively, it would be good if friendly-fire was a toggleable option or just not implemented on melee weapons.

I love the difficulty and the challenge of tactical combat, but I don't want to have to deal with AI failures who can't distinguish friend from foe.

Both DAO and DAII (oh and all the Mass Effect games) I was able to finish on Nightmare first try on release. Loved the experience even though some fights were horrible ofcourse. But it gives sooo much satisfaction when its this hard, plus it makes the first play through take so much more time. So yeah I'm going Nightmare on first play with Inquisition as well!

Woot like a Boss!

Honestly, I think it's a terrible idea. Nightmare isn't meant for a first playthrough.

And welcome aboard!

Pretty much this, it was hard already on Origins and DA: II, on Inquisition it will be as hard as Dark Souls.

I beive FF is toggable.  On and off options I think.  I wish it were like origins with scalling FF Damage.  FF ruined DA2 for me at first as well.

That first playthrough of Nightmare DAO on release (no patches, no silly powerful dlc items, no any special knowledge, naturally) still gives me nightmares to this day. After that, any difficulty that's not Nightmare just won't cut it for DAI.

I will play it on the highest difficulty from the start. No point on playing it on normal when all the devs came to the forum and said how beatable it is and I've played enough Bioware games on hardest difficulty to have a sense of their style by now.

I am planning on going Hard for the first playthrough.  I have never been that great at dragon age games but I figure I can lower the difficulty to normal if it's too much for me.  I want to focus on doing tactics and I worry that normal may be too easy for that and my laziness will kick in and I will just do the action-y version.  So I figure "Hard" mode is a good start for me since it will force me to use tactic camera and hopefully I develop good habits from it so I can eventually play nightmare.

For me its a question about ”what will I have most fun with?”

Normally on BW games I play hard for my first playthrough and move to nightmare/insanity on all playthrough after that.

This is to get more replayability from my second playthrough and because its easier to mix your party on hard then it is on nightmare.

I been thinking about starting blind on nightmare and stream it. It would be fun to stream and hopefully enjoyable for ppl to watch a blind nightmare playthrough.

Anyways if I will stream and if I will play on nightmare the first time is still in the air for me. Most of all I want to have a fun experience (challenge and min maxing is imo fun btw =p)

Sure do. Lothering, for example, was just the purest terror you can find. Those fields with the bandits still make me anxious. ;_;

If DA:I had better documentation of its mechanics, I would start on nightmare. But it does not.

I'll start on hard and turn it up if I need to.  I ended up playing the other games on Nightmare (and modding the game to be more difficult after that), but I just want something that is engaging and that  I can't just steam roll though without activating my brain.  With some of the changes they have made I think the game is going to achieve that on lower difficulty settings, but time will tell.

Hard was hard the first time through, but I thought it was perfectly fair.

I don’t agree, the vids have actually given us much of information, paired with comments from the devs I feel like we have a pretty good picture on the games mechanics.

I'm starting with Normal. I'll go with Nightmare in the second playthrough.

I've never played a Dragon age game on a different setting than Normal, but I almost feel like starting off Inquisition on Hard. Combat sounds very well done this time around and I'd simply like to try it. I doubt I'll ever do a playthrough in nightmare though...

Don't worry, you're not the only one. With Origins and DA2 it was because that was the only way for 100% Friendly Fire, but for Inquisition it's a combo of habit + feeling like I'm cheating otherwise. Like winning a game of chess against someone letting you win (NOTE: This is something completely for myself, not a belief I hold others to and judge for looking at differently). Having said that, I am worried it will affect my enjoyment of the game, because I also have other self-restrictions that I impose upon myself that potentially make it impossible for me. I don't let any of my companions get knocked out, and I don't use potions of any kind.

In Origins, this wasn't a problem at all. Combat was hard, but it was very rare for me to have to reload. In DA2, I finished Act 1 and then didn't pick up the game again for a year because it was just too tedious for me. Head into a battle, successfully defeat all enemies, YA-oh more are dropping down! Reload, take second wave into account, successfully defeat all enemies, YA-oh more are dropping down! Reload, take THIRD wave into account, successfully defeat all enemies, that better be the la-YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

With Inquisition's limitation on healing, from their viewpoint and a general sane consumer viewpoint I can see it's appeal. But for me as someone who plays Nightmare first with no potions, I really wish they'd gotten rid of that side of healing instead. I'm hoping Barrier, Guard and careful planning will be enough. But I doubt it :(

But after that, it's Normal/Hard difficulties for me and I'm not worried about those playthroughs. I like how most people tend to work their way up to Nightmare whereas I do the opposite - I play once on Nightmare so that I can play freely on Normal/Hard without feeling dishonest with the voice in the back of my head asking me 'good work, but come on, did you really beat that bad guy?'

The vids are very long, and combing through them to come up with a coherent synthesis of the gameplay mechanics is an incredible exercise in aggravation.

There's no concise compilation that gives us an exhaustive tree of the party mechanics, the actual relative merits of damage vs. burst because we have almost 0 documentation on the unique rules that apply to enemies, etc.

That is my plan after I do my solo nightmare run on second playthrought Ill turn it down to hard so I can try some silly party combinatons. Like 3 mages and 1 rogue or all Rogue setups etc.

I'm going to do nightmare! Especially since/if FF can be turned off at any difficulty. Speaking of, has the fact that it can be toggled been documented anywhere? I'm pretty sure I remember them saying it during one of the twitch streams, but I'd feel better seeing it in writing.

I wish you luck with it.

Makes me think of this classic short film from 1969:

They say daI is easier than dao and to me that is very sad news. I remember playing dao on nightmare the first time and I dont remember it being a great challenge. Though I was playing an arcane warrior with blood mage so maybe that was why.. Yeah now that i come to remember that build was ridiculously op even for nightmare. Anyways I digress. Da2 was way harder. I went nightmare there too and I was barely survivng those awefull waves until I reached the rock wraith. Had to reload and fill my armour with electricity runes before I retried the deep roads. So I guess you can say that wasnt a clean nightmare playthrough as I metagamed a little and skipped certain side quests that were almost impossible (couldnt beat those awegian scroll renevants for the life of me)..

But yeah tldr: I always go for nightmare first playthrough

I only ever really play on normal. I always tell myself I'll try a harder difficulty, but never do.
