Don't worry, you're not the only one. With Origins and DA2 it was because that was the only way for 100% Friendly Fire, but for Inquisition it's a combo of habit + feeling like I'm cheating otherwise. Like winning a game of chess against someone letting you win (NOTE: This is something completely for myself, not a belief I hold others to and judge for looking at differently). Having said that, I am worried it will affect my enjoyment of the game, because I also have other self-restrictions that I impose upon myself that potentially make it impossible for me. I don't let any of my companions get knocked out, and I don't use potions of any kind.
In Origins, this wasn't a problem at all. Combat was hard, but it was very rare for me to have to reload. In DA2, I finished Act 1 and then didn't pick up the game again for a year because it was just too tedious for me. Head into a battle, successfully defeat all enemies, YA-oh more are dropping down! Reload, take second wave into account, successfully defeat all enemies, YA-oh more are dropping down! Reload, take THIRD wave into account, successfully defeat all enemies, that better be the la-YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.
With Inquisition's limitation on healing, from their viewpoint and a general sane consumer viewpoint I can see it's appeal. But for me as someone who plays Nightmare first with no potions, I really wish they'd gotten rid of that side of healing instead. I'm hoping Barrier, Guard and careful planning will be enough. But I doubt it
But after that, it's Normal/Hard difficulties for me and I'm not worried about those playthroughs. I like how most people tend to work their way up to Nightmare whereas I do the opposite - I play once on Nightmare so that I can play freely on Normal/Hard without feeling dishonest with the voice in the back of my head asking me 'good work, but come on, did you really beat that bad guy?'
