For me:
- Ridiculous visual effects of some spells/abilities and animations: rogue teleporting through the air leaving huge trails of air wave with supersonic sound effects and purple flashes, rogue backstabbing with flashing purple, enchantment with lights circling around characters and when it goes off it looks like coming off a sci fi world not a magical fantasy world, Cassandra and knight enemies with shield charging creating a wave air barrier, Varric firing a salvo of purple bolts, some sword slashes creating a trail of burning air, health potions bathing characters in a swathe of bright green light, etc, etc.
- Stacking them on top of each other, the battlefield becomes a chaos, a discordant cacophony of bright colors and rainbows, particularly near fade rifts, sometimes obscuring what's going on. Some effects are alright but they are too large visually. Others are way too over the top - breaking immersion and the sense of realism. This is Dragon Age, a dark fantasy world with mature themes and gritty nature, not Saturday morning cartoon or World of Warcraft. It is okay to exaggerate stuff somewhat to add impact, but IMO this has gone too far. It is understandable that there's a need to provide distinct visual clues for players to immediately identify what's going on so as to be able to make informed and quick decisions. And there will be players who don't see this as a problem, but I find all these excessive, I'm sure many others do as well. That's why there needs to be a slider/toggle to tone down spell/abilities' visual effects, make them subtler.
- The recent news that there will be no healing spells and limited potions are welcome news. It encourages better planning and better play so that one considers fighting several battles ahead, not just the next one, because one has to preserve their health now that heals/potions are in limited supply. Still, considering BW's history of creating relatively unchalleging games, I doubt that it would be enough of a challenge for me. I play DAO on Nightmare with a mod for extra levels of difficulty, even then it wasn't enough for me. Played DA2 on Nightmare, but it wasn't exactly that challenging, more like tedious with enemies with their insane health. Here's hoping BW create a truly challenging Nightmare mode that doesn't use cheap tricks like pumping insane healths and one-shot damage to enemies, and require the player to really strategize, tactically optimized and play intelligently to defeat. That said, the majority of players out there are more casual, so it is understandable if BW didn't focus too much on getting higher difficulties right. Would be nice though.
- Looking at a lot of the videos of gameplay released recently, there seemed to be a lot of enemy groups standing idly about, waiting to be discovered and subsequently be wiped out. The fights look easy, providing not much tactical challenge. Here's hoping these repetitive, boring 'popcorn' fights are not representative of the game's battles. I remember playing DA: Legacy and DA: Mark of the Assassin. There were ambushes, carefully and intelligently placed enemies that provide a bit more surprise and tactical thinking, where each battle scenarios are different and provide new ways of combating.
I did preorder the game. So it's not like I'm super duper worried, just concerned certain stuffs.
