I have mixed feeling about this. When I read a book or watch a move, I have made a decision to go along with what the author has decided is appropriate for the story. I either like or dislike the conclusion and largely because of the content and its portrayal. But for books I can be selective in the writers I choose to read. In role play my choices are far more limited and there are interesting characters that I think I would like to become more intimate with, but so far in RPGs the outcome of the game is usually not affected by the intimate relations one experiences in the game, i.e the dragon still dies.

I liked :

I'm all for gated romances. It serves to make the characters seem more like real people, with their own set of preferences that the main character may not necessarily fall into. Whether its gender, species, or world view...I say bring on the restrictions.

But would want to have it woven into the main plot and understand why the restrictions are in place, played out in the story line. I would imagine that is probably not inexpensive.

There are several reasons to make the dialogue fixes to open up the NPCs to multiple preference relations. If you are straight it is probably not apparent to you. I am not and the availability of relations to me is rather limited in a world where nature has defined us as 7% to 10% for my gender within the population. The cost of opening up relations this way is fairly inexpensive. It allows the player to have many more opportunities to enjoy more intimate relations with an NPC.

But, far more important to me is that the game support the relationship in a way that brings value to the game rather than pixels bumping and grinding against each other for kisses that add little to the story.

Personally, I like that the romances are limited as well. People seem to forget that all these characters were written first and foremost as individuals who each play a role in the game BEFORE they are chosen to be a potential LI. Naturally all of these characters are going to have their own values and preferences, especially when it comes to their choice of lover. It did not make sense to me in DA:II that all the characters were bi. It just didn't. I mean, I respect that they chose that, but I can't really understand it.

So in DA:I, the fact that there's only certain people each PC, depending on gender and race, can romance, makes a lot of sense to me, and I love it. While I am admittedly disappointed that Varric is not a romance option, I understand that they did not write him as a romance. They never intended him to be a romance option, he was always supposed to fill the role of best friend. And that's what I like! The companions and characters have a purpose BESIDES just being there to sleep with! They put a lot of thought into these characters, so when they choose not to make someone an LI for everyone, it's because they know that character. They know what would and would not work.

I personally don´t mind the restricted options for romance. I´t make sense. The personality and even the sex orientation are there to make the character believable. I can´t imagine Blackwall to be gay.
I was really disapointed, when I found that Anders was a romance option for male Hawke. I remembered him from Awakening like a womanizer. It was not him anymore.

Kissed a man in my real life, I like girls better. Most of the times in games I play a female character. Wanted to romance Morrigan as my city elf lady, but it didn´t really bothered me I could not. Loved Morrigan even more.

What I hate most about DA:I romance options is... WHERE IS MY REDHAIRED MIDGET?! (They promised my a midget... The midget is a lie...) (PS: Please don´t be offended by the word midget. Everybody is offended with everything these days...)

What I want to say is, there are no romancable dwarven characters. Why? In DAO you had human and elven companion romance (the only dwarf you could hook up with was the noblehuntress in Noble Dwarf origin), in DAII it was the same, two elves and two humans, even at the Brothel in Kirkwall there was no dwarven prostitute. In DA:I you have 5 humans, 2 elves and even 1 qunari, but zero dwarf options. You can even be hard in Harding. Do they hate dwarves so much on Bioware?

BTW: I fell in love with the redhead dwarven scout on the first sight.

Some people here say, they are somewhat dicriminated because they can´t hook up with some same sex characters. Well what about a zoophile who could not hook up with a dog in DAO? And what a lovely puppy he was...  :D :D :D What I want to say is, some option are not for everybody. Some characters are straight. Some options are missing. But that is the life and we must live with it. We can not have everything. It would be greath my lesbian neighbour loved me, but it adds to her character. And it adds to Solas character, that he loves only elven women.

PS: Please, excuse my english, it´s not my native language.

There's......a lot of questionable things happening in this post.  I can't tell if it's a language thing or if you are unaware that some of your reasoning is offensive.  I'll just say two things because I'm not sure if you are trolling or not.

1.)  The fact that you "can't imagine" a guy like Blackwall being gay is exactly why we need to have more gay characters in games.  Because there are thousands of gay men like Blackwall (minus the whole tainted Grey Warden thing) in the world.

2.)  Please don't ever compare homosexuality with bestiality.  They are not comparable at all.

I support the gating, and have done so from the start, even when it meant that I couldn't romance Sera (who I was hoping to be my main LI) with my Male Inquisitor. Having across the board representation is a very good thing, in my high and mighty opinion, and is worth some sacrifices. Do I think that Bioware would do well to not throw the "Promiscuous Bisexual" trope around so much? Yes, most definitely. Is it often disappointing to be unable to romance your chosen LI because they simply aren't into guys/girls? Yes, it is. However, I believe that the gating makes the world more real (once again IMHMO)

I will grant, however, that I do more often fall into the category of people who play characters different from themselves. I did play my main Warden as myself, back in DA:O, being one who is generally disinterested in sex, but afterward I realized how much character depth I had missed through the romance path. I changed my tune in DA2, romancing Merrill, and doing so made the experience feel more complete somehow.

The main point of my post is: "Why are there no romancable dwarven characters?" Not a one in the whole Dragon Age series (except Mardy).

And I hade this hunch of mine, that Varrick and Harding will have affair together.

The only beef I have is with the racegated romances. In order to romance Cullen or Solas, you have to play a Human or Elf lady. This doesn't really fall into the mantra of "play someone differently from what you're used to" because a lot of people choose Human or Elf. For the rest, I'm pleased.

In terms of characterization though... race- and class-gating add more depth than gender-gating. I mean... Fenris likes girls instead of boys... aaaand? Doesn't really add anything to his character. But how about: Fenris refuses to romance a mage and is harder to romance with a human than an elf. That's way more interesting.

Actually, Fenris' romance with a mage was one of the best romances in the game. I would miss these love/hate romances. They are so powerfull and dynamic... That's why I'm against class gating. You have only friendly romances left if certain constellations are unavailable. If any, it should be harder to romance a character with a certain class, but not impossible. That's just my opinion.
