I don't like having 'special advantages' in my games. I see I have a special delivery chest in my house with a set of Blood Dragon Armor and a bunch of books (that seem to add to stats, skills, etc). Is the game originally designed to be balanced without it or with it? I just want to experience the game as originally designed, without cheesy 'premium content' stuff, but I'm not sure if what's in the chest is 'cheesy premium stuff' or was there from the beginning?
starting game, not sure if I should open the 'special delivery' chest.

Every chest in your house, apart from the one where you store unused gear, is a premium content.

The items in the chest are all unlockables that Bioware gave away for certain things around the game's launch. Everything in there (a couple weapons, amulets, rings, belts, a pair of boots, a couple books (mostly free xp), and the blood dragon armor) are really only good enough to use during the first act. I like it because I get amulets and stuff my companions can use, but there is nothing that impressive to be game breakable. Even the blood dragon armor can only be used by you if you are a warrior, so there is a good chance you won't even be able to use it. This is not the high powered stuff from the DLC packs. And for the chest to be full of these items, you would have had to have downloaded them from Bioware anyway.

thanks for the responses. So in short, I shouldn't open any chests in my house except for storage. I really really don't like playing with any kind of advantage over the vanilla game (I got the game as part of a Dragon Age compendium sale, but I really don't care about DLCs)

Yeah, just remember that your writing desk is not a chest and obtain quests from there.

It's not much of an advantage, the items are either designed for a certain level and have a level requirement, other items will scale to your current level.
As for extra levels and stats, the mobs scale to your level.
