I've played as every race and each gender in all of them, and I have romanced all of the characters in the game.  In addition I had a mod that allowed me to romance anyone regardless of my gender.  My favorite character is Morrigan, simply because she is so unprepared for love or romance and comes to it with no agenda.
As a result the romance with her is the most interesting and enjoyable.  The sweetest most tender romance was with Alister, as he is the sweetest most genuine character in my opinion.  I agree with an earlier poster who said that Zevron was the most loyal romance.  When he fell in love he stayed with me forever through thick or thin.  Leliana did not do very much for me in a romance.  I don't particularly care for her character, and she did not seem especially genuine in her romantic responses.  If I could choose to romance anyone else in the game I might choose Duncan.

My canon Warden (human noble) initially romanced Morrigan because he found her interesting and very different from all the women he'd met growing up in Highever. Broke things off after she told him she wanted to end it, since (from a role-playing perspective) it seemed like she had only been using him to take out her mother. He wound up romancing Leliana since her values were more in line with his own (i.e. moral but not dogmatic; not constantly suggesting the party abandon people to die) but her past as a bard and experience with political intrigue still kept things interesting.

I always either romanced Zevran or Alistair. The elves always ended up with Zevran because I thought they would be a cute couple. My mage had Alistair because the whole "Married Ex-Templar who is now king has a mage for a mistress" was to delicious to pass up. The dwarfs also dated Alistair because he was as close to royalty as they were going to get. Zevran however was my favorite. His voice was just so nice to listen to and he was a all "Live for the moment and take your please where you can" while Alistair was all "Blight and Duty" I just kinda hated how I bought their love. I would have liked to romance Sten for the hell of it. It would have been so funny!

See, obviously it depends a bit on how well/badly the nicest dialogue options fit your RP, I guess, but my first playthrough I don't think I bought Alistair any gifts besides a mug of ale in Lothering, and I didn't go out of my way to say what I thought he'd want to hear (although Cheery was pretty nice and didn't say anything obviously awful to him, either). Only other gift I gave him was his mother's amulet. My current character has given Zevran a few shiny trinkets but (excluding the special Dalish Gloves) that's only totalled probably 8-12 approval points. (I did use the Feastday Pranks/Gifts items to boost a couple of other characters' approval for mostly RP reasons, and also because oh my god STEN'S BUTTERFLY SWORD... Had to use the book to bring him back up to not hating my character after giving him that, totally worth it.)

So help me if I could have had Duncan I would have. I wouldn't have needed Morrigan's ritual at all. ;)

Yeah, Erestory, I agree, with what you said earlier about Sten too.  He might have been interesting to say the least :P

Which is why I am so happy about the Iron Bull. Those horns can be swung from!

Alistair - soooo much more to him than meets the eye and what does meet the eye is very nice indeed. The under-Alistair that wants family and a sense of belonging and a normal (?) life. The one who is so inexperienced when it comes to romance but still screws his courage to the sticking point and makes his heart known.

Anora? Thedas' biggest fool for thinking (suggesting) Alistair wouldn't fight for what he believes in.

Morrigan. I love the character so much that she's having my baby.

Well I cannot say I romanced every character (and I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them)  I will say I enjoyed the Morrigan romance the most:  it is full of angst that just seems to suit the whole DAO world and it, along with Alistair's story, is closely tied to the main plot.  Morrigan is mature, headstrong - and has difficulty admitting or accepting affection.  I appreciated that it took some time to develop and was not 'automatic' (in fact is prone to failure); it took commitment to sustain.

Between three Wardens I have romanced Morrigan, Leliana, and Zevran.

I played as a Dalish elf in my canon and I felt Morrigan made most sense, seeing as we were both characters that grew up around nature and animals, we both basically hated people and society, and he got her approval more often than not.

She is a pretty crappy lover, though. Only finally showed some semblance of care upon the DR and Witch Hunt.

I don't have any particular interest in the romances except inasmuch as they fit with the character in question, so I've only done three of them once and one not at all despite having played many more characters than that. I like all of the options as characters; they just haven't all made sense for any of my characters to have a romance with. DA:O was actually the first game where I did any of them at all, and so far, the Dragon Age series in general has remained the only series where I've done so.

Zevran was my favourite, partly because I feel that one advanced more naturally than some of the others, and partly because there seems to be the most loyalty there (which seems like it would be an important element, to me). It also -- at least with the male PC, which is the only way I did it -- avoided being overly sappy, which is always something that bugs me in romances. People can show they care about each other without that, and I prefer it that way. Basically, it worked out perfectly for the character who had the romance, and it ended up unexpectedly adding an interesting dimension to that playthrough without making me feel kind of annoyed through most of the romance dialogue, so that was cool. Zevran's also one of my favourite two of the potential romances, since he tends to have a different view on things than most of the others.

Leliana's was the second I did, and while I do like Leliana as a character, I just wasn't very fond of the romance. It made sense for the character I was playing, but it was just too... sappy, for lack of a better/more neutral term for it. It got to me a little bit. I don't know if that aspect would've been better or worse if I'd been playing a male character at the time.

I never finished the playthrough with the character who romanced Alistair, but his seemed to be going much the same way as Leliana's (as in, feeling oddly fast to the whole 'adore' and then 'love' stages, and sappiness). Again, I do like him quite a bit as a character, I just wasn't fond of the romance (since I'm not fond of most romances, that's really not surprising).

I've never had a character who had a romance with Morrigan. She's my other favourite of the four, character-wise, and I get the feeling hers might be more to my liking than Leliana or Alistair's, but for various reasons neither of the two male characters I've played thus far were interested in her.

I definitely appreciate that they are all also quite interesting to have as friends of the character, and in fact, I generally prefer them that way (with the exception of that one playthrough were it really worke elsewise).

As for the 'if you could romance anyone' question... none of my characters yet really had any interest in anyone who wasn't already a romance option, so I can't think of anyone.
