Wish more people would read this post than simply group-think "TOO FLASHY".
But the combat is "TOO FLASHY" and colorful. I thought this game was a dark fantasy not a neon colored romp thru thedas.
I agree. Non magic abilities are too flashy, particles effects are too flashy, combat is too flashy. I looked at some youtube videos and without pause, it looked confusing and messy. ( especially when all the companions use an ability at the same time. I was sometimes lost ) God even Sera's abilities with her bow are too flashy.
I kind of agree. You don't need to slap particle effects on everything to make it look nice. The cynic in me wonders how much of it is to cover up the recycled animations carried over from DA2 - I know at least the mage gets stuck with those for staves, minus actually being able to hit someone.
You guys think this is too flashy? Wait until DA4. Explosions of color and sound with every foot step.

Very true. I think removing the flash from everything not tied to spells or magic would go a long way.
I would've been nice if there was some sort of toggle for this. May be difficult to implement, though.
For me it has nothing to do with realism. It's just that sometimes(definitely not majority of time) I honestly can't really tell what's going on especially when 3-4 characters are clustered. I feel like I'm looking at a fireworks show instead of seeing blades connecting with armor. Generally I like the way the effects look, but sometimes it's a bit over the top for me personally. Definitely my biggest concern overall with this game so far. It does seem to be mitigated for me to some extent when in tactical view.
I'm sure I'll get used to it. Combat in general looks amazing ![]()
The warriors and rogues are not using lightsabers (or ARE they???
). Don't really see the need to have flashy trails behind every swing. Rogues lost their appeal for me when they went full-Shinobi in DA2, and now they don't seem to be letting up.
Since DA: O rogues and warriors have had abilities that made them glow. It's nothing new here. Remember Leliana with her purple sparkles and Oghren with his red rage aura?
I totally forgot about this lol, I've always had a mod that disables their visual effect two seconds after they are activated xD
Like I said, I understand they need to need to represent abilities/effects somehow, and as someone else said every archery animation in DAO looked the same.
All I ask is that they tone it down, and attempt to go for more realistic effects (Such as sparks or blood) for warriors and rogues intstead of magic lights. Leave that to the mages.
Guess the PS3 and 360 version get an advantage here, their weaker hardware means Bioware won't put as much flashiness and particle effects into warrior and rogue combat.
I keep forgetting about DAO sparklies since I use the Personal Annoyance Remover mod. Shame that we won't get one for DAI.

There was a graphics option shown on PC today that lets you control the "richness" of the effects. At least I think that's how it was worded.

The effects quality in the recent live stream was set to "ultra".
It says " set the quality of in game effects.Higher values will result in richer looking spells, fire, smoke and other atmospheric effects"
fingers crossed that this was why combat looked like a rave.If so,the solution is simple
Yeah waaaaay too flashy, Rogues and Rogues dont need all those colored auras, When everything goes off at once its hard to tell if your gonna take dmg from a huge enemy move at times.

The mage's skills look great, but I can't be having with some of the Warrior skills...and that big poison cloud for rogues, no no no.
As beautiful as the effects look, I'm starting to find them a tad distracting.
It definitely comes down to preference, but I like the flashiness.
I think one of the bigger complaints about DA:O combat was that the warrior/rogue skillset were incredibly boring compared to the mages'. I'm glad Bioware decided to shore up this to make warriors/rogues more appealing. Maybe could use a little less luminescent lights, but still a good step in the right direction.
I'm more concerned with the hit detection and lack of kill moves tbh.
Way too flashy. Can barely see what's going on.
This is mostly my concern. I actually want to see what's going on during the battle. But if it's not hindered then it's fine.
Looks like a party-based Tekken\Soul Calibur, really.
It's interesting - people want "mundane" warriors and rogues.
You know what a mundane warrior or rogue would do to a demon, a beast with giant red crystals coming out of it or how about a dragon?
You're warriors and rogues are covered in magical items imbuing you with beyond normal capabilities.
The Rogue was glowing purple because he is the Tempest Spec and the Warrior was green because those are fade abilities all Classes get.

I hope you're exaggerating because if not you may need to see an eye doctor.
@Lebanese Dude
It should at least be coherent with its own lore.
It never truly has.
