Just to try to get some more clarity on this: does anyone know if auto-attack is definitely in the game for consoles and PC?

Earlier dev statements seemed to indicate that it would be a toggled option in the settings, but recent gameplay videos and the Twitch streams haven't shown any signs of auto-attack as far as I can see.

There is auto attack. On console it's the right trigger (hold if you want to keep attacking) and on PC it's on both mouse and a keybind.

Some clarifications hopefully to the rescue!

When directly controlling a character (ie not in tactical cam mode):

-Hold controller trigger to continuously "auto"-attack, tap to do a single attack (or repeatedly tap, which does the same thing as hold)

-Hold 'R' (rebindable) or hold left click to continuously "auto"-attack, tap to do a single attack (or repeatedly tap, which does the same thing as hold)

Not pressing/holding attack button/key when directly controlling a character will cause them not to attack.

In tactical cam mode you're basically assigning orders, so all party members will autoattack while in tac-cam. The camera can be panned and tilted all around in tac-cam mode, it's not iso/top-down locked.

Is there any reason we can't stay in Tac Cam all the time?

Edit: Let me rephrase. Can we stay in Tac Cam all the time?

You could, but I find it's much easier/more convenient for running/navigating around when directly controlling.

That would depend on whether we can move-to-point outside of the Tac Cam. I always move-to-point, rather than driving with WASD.

WASD outside tac-cam.

Can you select all > move in tac cam? Er, I guess I should ask if we can select multiple party members in the first place?

There are group orders, like Attack My Target (of currently selected character), but no box/group select all.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions.

Are there any options to move basic attack off of the right trigger for controller users (for example, multiple controller layouts or the ability to rebind)?

No controller rebind I'm afraid.

But point and click with the tac cam? So all I would need to point and click move is to scroll out to the maximum distance?

Yeah click to move in tac, though I'm not sure what follow behaviour is like (ie whether you'd need to keep moving each party member individually).

That's unfortunate. Selecting characters in DAO and DA2 was the best way to get them to stand still. I'd give orders to one or two characters, and then select the rest so they didn't run around and get in the way.

Unless there's a character-specific stand here and don't do anything command. Is there? Can I tell Blackwall to stand somewhere and do nothing at all without having to control him directly?

Yea there's a hold position order.

So does this mean we can't click on an enemy and assign them as our target while in 3rd person? We have to manually face them as they move around?

Still have targets in 3rd, attacking auto-faces. You can manually move around to flank and such.

Now I really hope I don't get motion sickness when using the tactical camera. :(

You have full control over the tac camera, so hopefully not!

Ugh, Thx for the confirmation @Barrett Rodych

I just cant understand why you keep changing gameplay fetures like this. "The old system worked fine and was well liked so lets change it!" I just cant see the logic behind it.

I mean I wil get used to it, I have to. But there are some ppl with things like joint disease that play your games that will really have trouble with having to hold down an button to "auto attack"

I'm afraid I can't speak to the why, I only came onto DAI early Sept., to mostly focus on PC GUI testing. Would have to get insight from design.

Seems like.

And as Barrett says, it's not clear whether the other companions will follow when out of combat, so it may actually not be possible to explore in Tac Cam without moving each character individually.

Just checked; they follow, tac-cam explore to your heart's content!

I literally just watched Laidlaw attack a target from the pause menu, un-pause it, and the camera did not move at all.

Exactly.  Clearly there is some confusion right now, but the reality is they would be stupid to re-design the PC version in such a way as it's unplayable without multiple mice connected.

Character auto-faces (towards the enemy) when attacking, I meant, which is separate from camera facing.

I'm not sure what behaviour/action you think would require multiple mice?

If you're wanting to play DAI with a mouse only, and not the keyboard, the non-tac-cam mode ("3rd-person"/over the shoulder) will probably not be for you.

However, tac-camera mode can be tilted/panned to be the same 3rd-person/shoulder camera position, and doesn't require mouse/'R' button hold for attacking.

But can we lock the camera to follow our character while in tactical cam mode?

Correct
