Auto-attack?

I'd understand the frustration if we had to mash buttons to attack continuously, even though it wouldn't really bother me personally, but is it really such a big deal to hold down a single button? And if it is, you can just use tactical view all the time while in combat.

Yes, holding a mouse button for someone like myself would be OK, but a trigger will be FAR more uncomfortable for anyone with joint/muscle problems - controller is where the real mess is going to be, X360 controller is as comfortable as it gets, but holding down the right trigger for hours is far worse than holding down a mouse button.

FWIW: I'm also on PC, but play most of my games on TV with controller.

This x 1000...this is still a tactical RPG, the action game references by some are odd.

I was part of that DA2 Auto-Attack backlash, have pretty bad arthritis and holding down a button for my 200 hours of gametime is sounding HORRENDOUS/GAME BREAKING.

Maybe Laidlaw forgot how much backlash there was... that got patched in quick fast due to the whiplash.

I tweeted at him and others should as well. This is something that can still be fixed before the game comes out.

what about the people who want to control their attacks ? like me ... i hope the devs dont remove the feature completely ... using lmb once for a single attack sounds way more engaging than auto- attack ... plus there is auto attack in tac cam .... and besides during the pc interview/trailer i saw the mouse hovering above the screen indicating a sword when above an enemy ...

I like it because it makes me feel much more engaged. I would rather feel in control of every strike then just watch my character keep swinging.

*snip*

I can understand the more engaged part, what I don't understand when people bring this up is why they are playing a party based game.

As I see it the more engaged you are in controlling a character, the less you control the rest, so their presence become meaningless.

That is why, as long as Dragon Age is party based, tactical cam, pause and auto-attack are needed.

This was done for no other reason than homogeneity between mp and sp combat, since mp doesn't have tac cam and you control 1 character it was fine there so they just made the mechanics the same and forgot all the issues there is with it.

I'm really thinking you're right with this, which makes me really upset that Bioware HAD to do MP and effectively ruin SP combat in the process.

I said SP combat.

No auto attack in third person when it's been a staple of the series since its literal origins...and an 8 ability limit(A lot less worried about that though) are pretty damning for SP, and the only real reason for any of this is to compensate for MP.

Wonder what the most comfortable key to constantly hold down is? Probably shift or control, but you'd be using your pinky and that finger is weaker than the others and will get tired quicker...E would work best assuming its not being used by anything else(Yeah it can be rebinded but usually E servers an important function). Look like R is the best bet. Still an awful thing that we have to decide which finger to strain the most now, instead of just keeping it exactly the same as it used to be.

Don't fix things that were never a problem Bioware, I love you guys but really this is kind of ridiculous.

Quite strange gameplay decision...I could understand for a first person game but this is party-based...

I feel conflicted.

You want keys that can be pressed by resting your whole hand on them and still be able to reach the number keys.

For example, resting your pinky metacarpal on left control or holding left alt with your thumb. They are a bit counter intuitive and require getting used to. Side mouse buttons work well too, they usually require little actuation force and depending on your mouse you may be able to rest your thumb on the mousepad.

Depending on the implementation, rebinding scroll up and down may work as well. But many reasons why someone wouldn't want to do that ^^

Sounds like I need to buy a miniature weight to put down on the R key. Wonder how much weight I actually need lol

I thought they said you can press the trigger/key bind to attack too without holding it?

This reminds me of the pre-patch planet scanning in ME2. I wrapped a rubber band around my controller.

Some of y'all are really exaggerating. You're not going to be holding any button down for hours at a time unless you're an extremely bad player who needs to play the same encounter over and over. When you're out of combat why would you hold the trigger? Also, what makes you think you'll even hold it half the time in combat based on how the encounter moves? What I've seen in videos they whiff if you're not on top of the enemies to use it. Some of you are acting like as soon as the combat starts you'll be a drone and hold the button 100% of the time through the encounter. That's impossible unless you enjoy watching your PC swing at air. I guess mages? Not rogues or warriors though.

You might not even end up using auto-attack that much based on how fast some abilities come back. You will probably have no need to press the auto-attack button when abilities are up. Some posts I read earlier in the thread sound like they expect to hold the button and then press abilities at the same time...I highly doubt it works like that. You auto-attack and then alternate to using abilities when it's up. That simple, IMO. I think this will be something that ends up grossly exaggerated and most players will probably not even notice the change once they adjust to the mechanics. Worst case scenario you go to tac cam. Let's play it and see how it works before we judge it?

They could do what they should have done in the first place and have a toggle in the settings. Best of both worlds for everyone. Why they decided to go that way again is baffling.

It's obvious from the last 2 pages that there is NO consensus at all about how we think this will work. Need Bio to take some responsibility and clarify this asap.

Also,

Left mouse = attack
Right mouse = camera pan (hold)
Right+Left mouse = walk forward (wasd function)

Whoops!
