And this is the question I would like to ask the developers as the Windows 7 OS specification is unclear on the website.

Thanks

I'd imagine since it runs on DirectX 9 and past consoles (360/PS3). When they say Win7 they mean all versions of Win7.

As you see there are different "readings" of  the line :) .

Windows 7 Windows 8.1 (64 bit).

I would like to ask the developers to choose the correct one.

Thanks

I believe it is saying it will run on windows 7 if you have the 64 bit version of windows 7 but not if it is windows 7 32 bit.

I'm pretty sure the version of the Frostbite engine Bioware are using is x64 only. Besides, requiring 4GB or more RAM on an x86 system would make no sense.

On an x86 system you can only get a maximum of 3.5 available anyway

Dragon Age: Inquisition requires a 64 bit Windows OS, either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

May I ask why this is? e.g. the reason for the windowsa 64 bit OS?.  Is it because the game itself requires more than 4 GB of memory? I know of very few games today (that I play)  that requires a 64 Windows OS.. And do you or Bioware foresee that many more new games will require a 64 bit windows OS?

According to the Steam hardware survey, about 72% percent of gamers have 4GB RAM or more. I would expect that the be the bare minimum for non-casual gaming.

shadow of mordor, alien isolation and a few other new games require it.

Sorry, but the age of the 32 bit OS is passing.   You will be hard-pressed to find many new AAA games coming out that don't require a 64 bit OS.

Now that the legacy of the old-gen consoles is finally passed, it is time to move on.    I haven't had a 32-bit OS in a decade.

Ugh....  upgrade time I guess. Oh well, it's a waste running 32-bit with my 4 gb RAM anyway ...

I imagine nearly all games developed from now on will be 64 bit only. 32 bit is ancient tech, and 3.5GB RAM is just barely enough nowadays. The only reason 32 bit has lasted so long in gaming is because of the artificial longevity of the previous gen of consoles.

That's because many games released in the past were still using 32-bit executibles. Making it a 64-bit executible means they can put "minimum 4GB RAM" and actually mean it.

Yeah 64 bit is going to become more and more common... which is a good thing.

Just buy an OEM copy of windows 8.1 for like $60 and you're set :)

From a programmer perspective there are memory addressing limitations on 32-bit applications.  32-bit applications on 32-bit platforms can only use up to 2GBs. You can raise that up with special switch command on Windows that addresses it up to 3GBs. 64-Bit applications can address much much more. Also a 64-bit floating point you can add much bigger maps in it as well.

That and have a 64 bit compatible CPU. They might already, but it's good to check that and be sure, just in case.

It's just time. According to Steam survey, more than 70% of their users now run on 64-bit systems, thanks mainly to the success of Windows 7. Meanwhile, both the XBO and the PS4 (which are x86-based) have 8GB RAM, and therefore presumably require 64-bit executables. The 64-bit transition was always inevitable, and has been a long time coming. We're ready now, so it's a good time to make the jump as any.

I'm OK with this. However, this mean I can't play DA: Inquisition on my windows 7 32 OS. I bought an windows 7 32 OS in august 2013. The main reason was because I wanted to be able to play older games like Planescape Torment Morrowind or Oblivion or older adventure games like the Sherlock Holmes Games or the Secret Files games etc. I've read somewhere that a 64 bit OS will play some older 32 bit OS games, but not 16 bit games. So what do I do? I'm currently upgrading or rather renovating my home which means that I dont have any money right now to upgrade my computer...

So does this mean that Bioware and other companies decide which OS a game will be on based on just how many users on say Steam that has a a 64 bit OS? ps: where has the dit button gone?

Well, there are always "ways" to obtain things on the internet.

Just for your information, 64 bit operating systems don't have any problems running the majority of 32 bit executables. Certainly not relatively recent games like Oblivion, or even Morrowind. For really old games like Planescape, GOG.com does a good job of updating and rereleasing them for modern systems.

And I imagine 16 bit games can be emulated somehow.
