See, this is an example of an unnecessary change that eats up resources but does nothing to change the story or explain it better.

It would've been weird to call a character you see for the first time by name. Thus the change (yet it's fine in case of James...). In fact, I feel like they have disregarded quite a few lines when making those no-import character interactions, so quite a few necessary changes were not made.

It is clear in the very first scene that Shepard knows who Anderson is. Nor is it necessary to assume that Shepard never met someone just because a player hasn't played the previous games. Shepard meets Garrus and greets him as an old friend in a non-import game. I think it is a waste to change dialogue with characters you had to interact with in previous titles unless that change explicitly is meant for story or character exposition for new players.

That's what I meant. They should've changed all the dialogue with characters from previous games. You don't know who Garrus is, so he needs to introduce himself. Same with Liara, Tali (who is referenced as "old friend of yours" by Raan in a non-imported game) etc. The way it is now, some dialogue is changed but a lot is left so it becomes a weird mix of imported and new Shepards :D

Hmm, seems a non-import game kinda sucks. I think if ME3 was my intro to the trilogy, I'd be a whole lot less impressed.

It's depressing to play ME3 without past history. Genesis 2 alleviates the dullness, but still. Well, at least Genesis 2 has its own unique dialogues.

Lol! But I thought Genesis 2 did some cool things. Like Grunt not mentioning his tank, also, some other squadmates have different dialogues as well.

I think it is only depressing if you know that past history. I mean, really, does every game start with the PC as a baby and show all his/her time in school, on the playground, making friends, meeting love interests? Almost every story told has to start in a pre-existing world where the protagonist and the world he/she lives in has a history and certain relationships/preconditions are already in place.

Believe me, I never ever missed Thane or Grunt in ME3 because I never knew them. I knew there were these Reapers that we had to beat and I knew that Shepard had already met certain people in the past. That's was fine.

Another oddity from my non-import game: we just encountered the Yahg on Surkesh clobbering those two Cerberus troopers. Rather than remaining silent, Liara said "Something to put in our memoirs." WTF? Just because I haven't technically played LotSB doesn't mean ME3 should rewrite the fact that that SB was a Yahg and Liara defeated him. Why have her say that instead of just remaining silent?

Uhm, what does that line have to do with LotSB? She just comments on the unique encounter

And with a non-import game with the original ending, unless you played a bazillion hours of multi-player

1) Shepard always died
2) the Relays always exploded
3) The Normandy always crashed
 .

I believe points 2 and 3 were true even if you did play the bazillion hours of MP.

Liara's alternate line there doesn't rewrite anything. Unless you think implies that she'd never seen a yahg before?

Well, that's the way it struck me. I mean, when we first see the Yahg after landing, James said "there's something new" or something like that, while Liara remained silent. Her memoir comment seemed odd to me when she could have referred, even if obliquely, to the SB or seeing a Yahg before.

OK, this is odd. Shepard just talked with Anderson and when she told him she would do whatever it takes, even if it kills her, Anderson replied along the lines of "better not, then I would have to play the diplomat." No mention that Shepard had already died once. Now I am really curious if anyone is ever going to mention that Shepard died and was resurrected.
