My Warden was basically the Queen of Tanks so I used Alistair as bait. I used mods to improve Dog and sent him after archers; it was amazing. By the end of the game, my party of Tank Queen, Morrigan, Leliana, and Wynne tore through everything.

Nothing much to say here. Queen of Tanks continued to dominate the field. I replaced Nathaniel with Sigrun once I got her. I used Velanna occasionally, and I thought Justice made an awful tank no matter how many times I tried to respec him.

Played a Rogue Hawke, so I never had Carver. I pretty much ran the entire game with Anders, Fenris, and Varric. When I had Bethany, I used her instead of Fenris and made my Rogue Hawke into a mini-tank.

Not sure who I'll roll with yet! I'll use everyone until I get a feel for what to aim for and start building from there. I'm thinking maybe Iron Bull, Sera, and Dorian because something tells me their banter would be hilarious.

I tend to favor a Tank/Ranged Rogue/Healer layout in my games. Typically my PC will fill the role of the main attacker/DPS (Rogue or Warrior) or Nuker (Mage).

DAI... I don't know yet.  A lot of it will depend on their attitude and the character I play.  I'm thinking Varric will probably be pretty high up on that list.

If I am not playing as a mage, I immediately run to the Circle Tower after completing the DLCs in order to grab Wynne so that I have a spirit healer in the party. If I am not playing as a rogue, I pretty much constantly have Leiliana in the party so that I have someone who can pick locks. Conversely, I almost never use Morrigan or Zevran due to their not coming packaged with the abilities I use those classes for. And fighters I just swap in and out on a whim since I have no particular favorite.

 

That said, I did use Morrigan exclusively starting at level 14 on my first playthrough, after giving her Spirit Healer. And despite being a rogue on my ninth playthrough I used Zevran as dps. In both cases my decisions were partially due to the fact that my characters were romancing those two. (I would be lying if I said that my preference for using Leiliana when I'm not playing rogue isn't partially for the same reason.)

 

My most neglected character in Awakening is Sigrun, since she's not able to pick locks right out of the gate and doesn't start with the Cunning to learn how. I use her as a tank, sure, if I don't have enough Arcane Warriors to fit the part. (From which you can probably guess that my most used characters are Anders and Velanna. That said, Nathaniel comes along for the ride whenever my main can't pick locks.)

 

I've never played DA2, so I can't say anything on that, and I have no real predictions as to who I'll use in Inquisition.

Exactly! I'm glad at least someone understands. I think lots of people just assume Dog is weak because he's a dog. XD

DA:O Most Used: Wynne in any non mage playthrough, Shale and Dog/Ser Woofsy. I normally play a rogue archer when I'm not mage-ing up Thedas and I prefer to have two long range attackers and two warrior types in my party at all times.

DA:O Least used: Sten, Morrigan. I don't know why, I just don't

 

Awakening Most Used: Anders, Oghren and Justice.

Awakening Least Used: Velanna, I like her but her behaviour sometimes annoys me.

 

DA:II Most Used: Everyone, I mix it up more when I play DA:II but I tend to pick my team according to how they react to certain quests to ease the process of maxing friendship/rivalry.

 

For DA:I I think I'll use everyone again. Give them all a fair shake.

The rest? Sometimes a bit of Shale, especially in the Deep roads for RP-sake. I barely ever used the Hound, Sten. Oghren and the least one: Zevran, I barely ever talk to him either, just find him especially boring

 

DAA: Anders, because healing + magic rules supreme. Nathaniel, and usually Justice ... barely used the elven mage (Valenna? Can't even remember her name)

 

DA2: Anders (again, healing + damage), Merril, Avelline for teh most part. Hardly ever use Fenris or Isabella (though I like the latter, but if I need a rogue, its Varric for coolness)

 

With DAI? I can already say Cole might not see a lot of action, as well as Vivienne...

In DA:O I swapped the companions around quite a bit, but by the end of the day, it was something like this:

Least used: Morrigan (didn't made her an spirit healer for RP reasons), dog and Loghain (got him very late in the story)

 

In DA:A I actually used all of companions pretty fairly. Justice was the sole exception. I used him during his personal quest and nothing else.

 

In DA2:

Least used: Anders, Fenris and Sebastian.

 

Not sure about DAI. I'm getting the feeling I will use Varric, Solas and Iron Bull most of the time.

I try really hard to rotate my companions. That being said, there's three who always seem to be in my party (and my heart!) through the games: Wynne, Nathaniel, and Aveline.

 

If they're not in my party, I just feel lonesome. No matter how grouchy my protagonist is, I need one of the three. Seriously, my first playthrough of DA2 was two sword and shield tanks because I couldn't NOT bring Aveline (it was surprisingly effective, and our squishy friends were VERY protected). I have a vague sneaking suspicion that I'm going to be hauling Cole around a LOT because Inquisitor needs someone to motherhen.

 

I might bench Cas because I'm going to be playing a tank (as usual for my first playthroughs). I think my least used Origins companion is probably Sten, because no matter what I do to keep him alive, he tends to fatally implode when touched. And bless his heart, he thinks he can take it, so he runs up to things and dies. My least used DA2 character is PROBABLY Merrill, who I love. It's just that I feel terribly guilty around Merrill all the time, no matter what. Support her? Well, that'll probably get her eaten by demons faster. Yell at her? ARGH IT HURTS MY SOUL SHE'S TOO CUTE. Joke at her? She doesn't get it.

 

I'm usually way better at changing companions up in Dragon Age than I am in Mass Effect, where my first (and second) playthrough of all three games was determined by a simple formula. If Garrus---> Garrus in party. If no Garrus ---> Find Garrus. If Tali---> Tali in party. If no Tali---> Try to find Tali. If fail ----> Wait and sub in someone else I don't even care hey Jack want to get some air yeah sure you.

Origins: Shale, Oghren, Leliana were my party for as much of the game as possible (playing as a Dwarf Commoner Warrior). Least used are definitely Alistair (whine whine whine!), Wynne (always dies during Broken Circle), and Sten (unpleasable bastard).

Awakening: Sigrun and Velanna were my precious babies, with Nathaniel or Justice rounding things out. There just ended up never being space for Oghren and I hate Anders.

DA2: Aveline, Sebastian, and Fenris made the ultimate Mage Hate Squad with my Templar Hawke. I cannot stand Isabela (off to the Qunari for you!) or Merrill (she's a raging idiot), while I just had a casual dislike of Varric and thought Anders actually improved from Awakening.

Inquisition: I see a lot of Cassandra and Blackwall in my future, and Varric is the Rogue that I dislike the least. I severely doubt Vivienne or Bull will ever be in my party.

I don't know for sure but I am going to try to take Cole on every mission. Probably Sera as well because there's a high chance she'll be my LI. The banter between her and Cole might annoy me too much though, so she might collect dust at Skyhold.

Cassandra might also see a lot of fighting because Dat Voice.

It should be mentioned that difficulty level plays a huge part in this.  Especially with DA2, which I play on nightmare, Fenris and Merrill get left behind because they do as much friendly-fire damage as damage to the enemy, or else their names wouldn't appear.  For that matter, neither would Nathaniel or Varric with their death-dealing rain of arrows, except I always just turn that off in their tactics.  It does more harm than good.

In DA:O I tended to leave Dog and Sten behind the most, followed by Zevran. Dog just isn't as interesting to me, when I want to hear party banters. Sten never likes anything I do usually, and I really hate how slow 2-handed swords are in Origins. I take Zevran along sometimes but not nearly as often as the other companions.

 

Awakening - I hardly ever take Oghren anywhere. I also thought it was dumb to bring him back. I'd have much rather preferred a new character. As for second least used character, it was probably Velanna...

 

DA2 - Even though I love Varric, I don't take him as often as some of the other companions. I also never use Sebastian, because I hate him. Maybe I'm prejudiced against archers in general? lol. Merrill also doesn't get used as often.

 

DA:I - Honestly, unless I really grow to like them, I don't foresee myself using Cole or Iron Bull a lot. I'm also prejudiced against Vivenne at this point in time, but that may change. We'll see.
