DAO

Most used: Depends greatly on the Warden, but Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliana are a bit of a holy trinity that I use quite a lot.

Least used: Dog--I'd rather have a better tank, and Oghren, because I hate him, for the most part. 

 

Awakening

Most used: Everyone really gets their fair share of time, except...

Least used: Velanna for the most part. She's just not that interesting.

 

DA2

Most used: I use Bethany whenever I can. I love her, especially in that Circle dress!Varric and Isabela are also top picks, I also hate choosing between them for the party's rogue.

Least used: FENRIS! I can't stand him most of the time. He's got a cool voice, but he's a total dick, plus I hate his armor.

 

DAI

Most used: Varric and Cassandra. I've wanted Cassandra in my party for a long time! And Varric is always good fun.

Least used: Iron Bull. I hate how he looks, way too over the top huge and brutish, not like how I think a Qunari should look.

I try and vary when I use companions during the story, but I can definitely tell which ones I use the most and which ones I use least. Usually its for gameplay reasons (either because I don't like their abilities or they are too similar to my main character), but for some characters its just because I don't like their personality (I think just Oghren and Fenris though)

depends on what class I play as...but in general:

DAO: Leliana (dual-wielding too. you don't know you better ask somebody), Shale, Morrigan, Alistair. I rotated em out a bit more last time I played.

DAA: Sigrun(I tend to go to Kal Hirol first), Oghren, Anders, Velanna...Justice wasn't around long enough for me to use him often and he'd always die too quickly.

DA2: Izzy, Bethany, Aveline, Merrill. Didn't use Varric as much amd Anders wasn't that useful to me in combat in DA2.

In DA:O, Alistair was my main companion. Wynne, Leliana and often Morrigan were regulars, but no character was used as frequently as him.

 

Most neglected was Oghren and Sten. Zevran kinda, but he came along on more side quests.

 

In DA:A, Nathaniel was my regular companion. Sigrun is a close second, along with Anders. Valenna did come along, but mainly because I found her banter with Nathaniel to be amusing.

 

Justice got left behind throughout most of it.

 

In DA2, Varric was pretty much always there, with Isabela and Merrill making up the rest. Bethany was my other main companion, but Act 1's end pretty much undid that.

 

Most neglected were Anders and Fenris. Aveline was neglected a bit, but mainly for roleplaying reasons. After becoming guard-captain, it just didn't seem appropriate that she follow Hawke around except for more official business.

 

I suspect that Cass, Varric and Sera will be in my group a lot. While having Varric along everywhere may smack of Hawke's companion ensemble part deux, but I must listen to Cass and Varric's banter, and I want to see what he and Sera will be on about. I suspect that I'll want to drag Dorian and Iron Bull around a lot. I dunno what Vivi is on about but I'm curious. I have a feeling that Blackwall will be left behind a lot, but I hope he's interesting.

 

Edit: forgot about Cole. Poor guy. I'll probably forget while I play too.

Normally I use or abandon a companion based on their abilities, when they join, and their personalities. And, of course, the set-ups vary by class, but these are the characters most likely to earn a slot in my party.

 

DAO:

 

Most Used: Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliana.

All three join at or close to the beginning, which is very valuable since it lets me shape them however I want. They're also all love interests/best friend candidates, so my Warden has a good reason to bring them along. Two of them are plot-important, and they have wonderfully snarky banters together.

 

 

Least Used: Dog and Oghren

I love the Dog. I really do. But he just doesn't deal enough nor take enough damage to be worthwhile. And I usually do Orzhamar last, so by the time I pick up Oghren, one of two things has happened--a, my Warrior Warden is better than him, or b, Sten is better than him.

 

 

DAA:

 

Most Used: Nathaniel, Sigrun and Anders

Anders is a great heal-bot, even if he acts too much like Alistair for my taste. Sigrun is the most loveable bundle of energy ever and puts such a twist on the typical Death Seeker trope, that I have to bring her despite her lackluster DPS. Nathaniel is blessed with both an amusing personality and an amazing class (seriously, DAA was the time to be an archer).

 

Least Used: Velanna and Justice

Like Orzhamar, I usually do the Blackmarsh last so Sigrun and Velanna can Join. That means I have Justice for all of two quests before the end of the game, which just isn't enough time. And Velanna's personality grates me the wrong way--it's like they tried to replicate Morrigan, but failed.

 

 

DA2:

 

Most Used: Varric, Anders, and Fenris

Varric comes because he's Varric--enough said. Anders may be grating with his whining, but he does have a variety of casting styles--besides his healing, I've found him to do surprisingly good DPS. Fenris is a sword-wielding monster in elven form, and I like his banters with Varric (not so much with Anders, though).

 

Least Used: Sebastian, Bethany/Carver, and Aveline

Sebastian's interesting, but his DPS pales next to Varric's. Your sibling is gone most of the game, though I do use them when they're around. Aveline isn't that fantastic a tank, in my opinion. Warrior!Hawke is better in every regard, Duelist!Hawke is a great dodge-tank, and Spirit Healer!Hawke has buffs and one-hundred percent health regeneration. Even if Hawke isn't specced for tanking, I find that Fenris can off-tank well enough. And, as the above poster said, I think the guard-captain would spend more time defending Kirkwall than wandering with Hawke.

 

 

For DAI, I'm not certain. Blackwall doesn't look very interesting to me; neither does Solas. Sadly Cassandra isn't standing out much, either. However, I like what I've seen of Iron Bull and Sera, so they're probably going to see a lot of party time. I'd love to bring Varric or Cole along, but that's probably only going to happen on my non-rogue runs. Between Viv and Dorian, I find Dorian more intriguing.

 

Predicted order of companion use is something like this:

 

IB = Sera > Varric > Dorian > Cole > Cassandra = Vivienne > Solas = Blackwall

I've taken my mabari to kill the Archdemon.  Before some of these patches, you had to take the dog to complete his quests (Mabari Dominance).  You couldn't complete that quest unless you took him.

Least Used in DA2:  Merrill, Isabela, Carver.

 

All of these depended on my class and I play a rogue most of the time.

There are various objects in the game that you click on and when you do the dog Whizzes on things and this is part of his quest (which is funny as heck to watch).  This also gives him a battle boost for fighting and he is dominate against animals that might attack.  I always take him through the Brecilian Forest. During the final battle when fighting through the market district I think it's the wagon or a barrel. Once you click on this is the last one in the game.  Check the codex entries for the Mabari and your notes in your journal, some quest are note based.  As I said, since I think patch 1.03 you can't complete this anymore.  I'm not 100% sure if it's a quest that has stopped working.  Some of my random quests don't come up anymore.  It used to be you could swap your companions out and run back over one of the bridges, you can't do this anymore, since the patches, so I don't take him anymore.  That Archdemon goes right for the dog too and zeroes in on it.  Man it was hard keeping him alive. I've got a screenshot of that somewhere. I also take him in the beginning sequence for Redcliffe Village after the Landsmeet and before Morrigan's final quest comes up at Redcliffe Castle. Opps, you're dog has to be the one to click on the object or it should say your dog would be interested in this.  Another one is in the courtyard at Redcliffe castle and another over by the windmill somewhere. A player used to be able to take him to the Landsmeet too, can't do this anymore either (against Loghain).  Patches 1.03 and 1.04 really changed the game.

Most used in DAO: Oghren, Zevran, Shale. (And let me tell you, this setup kind of sucks unless you're playing a mage. I feel like these 3 characters are the B-team. They're the ones just tagging along and their outlooks on life are vastly more interesting than, say, Alistair's or Morrigan's).

Neglected: Dog, Alistair, Morrigan.

 

Most used in Awakening: All of them except Justice. I mean I used all of them about evenly.

Neglected: Justice. I always get him last. It's a shame really.

 

Most used in DA2: Varric, Merrill, Anders, Carver. (Four favorite characters. Merrill is adoriboo. Anders is actually pretty great and I'm very pro-templar so that's saying something. Varric's one of my favorite characters in all of fiction. Carver though...I could write essays about how great Carver is)

Neglected: Isabela, Fenris to a degree. (Isabela just never has a place in the party. Same with Fenris but his special abilities are AMAZING so I bring him along sometimes)

 

DAI Predictions

Most used: Blackwall, Iron Bull, Varric, Dorian. Actually, I'm probably going to use Solas a lot as well. He almost seems Jedi-like.

Ones probably facing neglect: Sera, Vivienne. Sera has been described as pretty shortsighted and I truly hope there's not irreconcilable differences between my Inquisitors and her over short-term acts of kindness vs. long-term benefits. The conversation you have with Kreia after helping a beggar out comes to mind. Vivienne's probably just going to get the short end of the stick. She's a good character that has the poor fortune of being in an AMAZING cast.
