In DAO it depends on my build, i trend to left behind repeated archetypes. For example as dwarven noble i left Alistair behind all the time as healer dalish i left Wynne, as city elf I left Lelianna and Zevran and so on...

Neglected: Loghain, only the retcon of Dwarven Noble could forgive him from his crimes

 

In DAA things changed a little:

Anders was ALWAYS IN THE TEAM

if i was playing run Sigrun was left behind and team never changed: Anders, Oghren and Velhanna, else either Velhanna or Oghren got traded for Sigrun... always left behind Justice, tanks were no longer needed in awakening (everyone was OP, a brute rogue could fill tank roll with ease)

Neglected: Nathaniel, in most cases, only the retcon of Dwarven noble made him to join... everyone else hanged him

 

In DA2 i always brought Varric because everyone else was playing "who brings on the more hatedom wins"

left behind ANDERS, heck i loved that character until it was destroyed by twilight emo writting skills... luckylly Merill's love power could fix the lack of a healer, plus potions... My healer was Bethany until she died. Sebastian was also left behind, i could not bear him, each time he opened the mouth i wanted to do some "Saarebas treatment" on him.

 

For DAI i foresee that the neglected character will be Solas... the game has not been released yet and i already hate him, guys like that were the reason I was unhappy to go to school as a child.

I play on Nightmare so naturally I value the stronger companions. But even after learning the game and being able to beat him with any combination I want, I still couldn't care enough to bring some of them with me.

I only used Zevran against the Crow guy from his past, can't remember the name. Sten suffers from being the weakest warrior. There are 4 of them and I actually liked Dog more. I don't have any real use for tanks other than killing the High Dragon early. And then there is Loghain that you get at the end of the game. Got too many of them to bother. I've never used him. In all the runs I let him live I did the ritual so he wasn't needed.

 

DAA

 

Mainstay - Velanna and Anders.

Neglected - None

 

I didn't go anywhere without the mages. Velanna is my favorite Awakening character and I always get her first. Also Anders was cool enough. The last spot was reserved for the mission specific companion. Everyone got his time.

 

DA2

 

Mainstay - Anders

Neglected - Aveline, Fenris, Carver, Sebastian

 

I just couldn't bring myself to care about the warriors. They are the weakest class for companions. Also their personalities aren't very agreeable with my characters. Sebastian suffers from being boring and kind of pointless. He performs a bit better than Isabela because he is ranged but Varric outclasses him. I like Bethany too, she is mainstay for most of Act 1. 

 

Basically my party was Hawke, Anders and Varric. Add Merrill for Magehawke, Isabela for Roguehawke and flip a coin for Warriorhawke. This changed only for companion's personal quests.

 

For DAI I think Cole will be a mainstay (or at least I'll try to make him work) and Wall will be the bench warmer. It's not that I don't like him, but like I said earlier I don't have much use for tanks. Cass may have a similar fate if Templar spec doesn't do enough damage ^^

DA: O (Most used) - Zevran, Morrigan, and Alistair. That ride was wild from start to finish.
DA: O (Least used) - Dog and Leliana. Regretfully.

DA: A (Most used) - Anders, Nathaniel, and Oghren. They seem to have allocated most of the dirty jokes into that party.
DA: A (Least used) - Velanna and Sigrun. I adored Sigrun, but I recruited her a little too late to use her as often as I would've liked. Velanna, on the other hand, preferred to yell at my Warden and wanted him to leave her alone. She never saw more than one quest after that.

DA: 2 (Most used) - Isabela, Fenris, and Anders. I'm noticing a pattern here.
DA: 2 (Least used) - Bethany/Carver only because they become unavailable early in the game only to make reappearances in DLCs and during the penultimate quests.

DA: I (Most used) - Dorian (eyecandy and necromancy-induced explosions), Sera, and Cassandra/Iron Bull. I'm planning to roll with Team YOLO mostly, but I'll probably switch Cassandra/Bull out with Vivienne from time to time (especially for the quality Vivienne and Dorian sassfests).
DA: I (Least used) - I'll have to wait and play the game for myself. Ideally, I would utilize everyone's talents because I think all of our companions deserve to shine in the battlefield.

My default was the main trio, Leilana, Morrigan and Alistair, but I liked Dog so he often got a run out whenever I was doing side quests.

My least used Oghren, now I can do non-PC and find it funny, but Oghren is not funny he's an irritating tosser who needs my Warden's fist in his mouth (possibly while she is projecting a lightning bolt from it).

 

Awakening

I've actually only finished it once but Velanna was my lock and my unrequited LI

Oghren got told to make himself absent really quickly

 

DA2

Varric is my lock, along with Bethany while I have her. Less so Carver but he gets more play time than the other warriors.

Merrill is the one I always leave behind because I really want to execute her as a Blood Mage rather than help her

I'll wait and see with the exception of Iron Bull who will be told to take a hike. I don't like qunari

I tend to use them all quite a bit. Planning out different companions for each play through based on my spec and LI amongst other things.  That all said Wynne is probably my most used in DA:O because she tends to be my healer if I'm not the healer.  And Leliana is probably close behind her since she's picked up early and tends to be my rogue and I plan my route through the different areas based on picking up my other companions.

 

Loghain is probably my least used however.  First he's gotten so late he doesn't seem worth it and second he never seems to be quite as good a tank as say Alistair even when I spec them the same.

On DA: O the least used it was mostly Dog. I usually rotate companions, I even wrote a program to generate and list all possible companion combination, and use it to never have the same party twice. I don’t always respect it though, in some playthroughs I tend to give my current LI a bigger participation, my current Origins playthrough has my male Amell mage bringing Leliana with him at all times, the other two are chosen at random.

As for Inquisition, I'm in the process of coding another rotation generator. This time taking party balance and chosen LI in the process of never repeating the same party twice.

The reason for this is that except for Anders in DA 2, I don't have any companion I dislike and the same may be true for DA: I(except maybe for Vivienne, I really dislike her stereotype)... so I make sure everyone always get their adventuring time.

I used to bring my boys everywhere lol, Morrigan was always one of my favourites and I liked Wyne for the healing.  I just never clicked with the others and had people who I could just replace them with.

I loved Awakening Anders to bits and the others fitted in well and gelled.  I guess I'm in the minority, but I've also always rather liked Oghren.

I was a big Fenris fan so he got dragged around a lot, Izzy was a lot of fun banter wise and Merril was a good mage.  I used to bring Anders around a lot but realised how much he would clash with Fenris so he ended up being left on the sidelines a lot unless I really needed a healer.  I never grew all that attached to Varric or Aveline so I just left them alone for the most part.

 

I don't know for DA:I yet....but I'm predicting a lot of Iron Bull, Cole, Solas, Dorian and Sera.  Then probably not a lot of Varric because there are too many other rogues I like and Vivienne, she seems like she has a bit of an attitude and not in the fun Morrigan way, but we will see.

I completed DA:O 4 times as a female city elf, once as a warrior and three times as a rogue. I still don't understand why. I almost completed it with a female human mage and a male dalish elf, and I had a female dwarf noble who finished Orzammar and the Temple of Sacred Ashes. Nobody else left Ostagar.

 

In terms of companions, I used everyone fairly equally in DAO, apart from Dog (until I got the Dog mod). Oghren suffered from late acquirement. I never used Leliana much, either. In DA:A I never really used Velanna or Oghren, but I only played it twice.

 

In DA2 I never used Merrill, mainly because I dislike her massively. And I only ever played a mage Hawke, so I never took Bethany past the prologue. I also tended to use Varric over Isabela, but I used Isabela enough that I wouldn't say she was neglected. Sebastien suffered most on that front, I think, since he was essentially just 'Varric, but ****ter'.

I'm not too fond of changing my companions' weapon preferences. With that said, going by classes for DAI:

 

Rogues - Never liked AI-controlled Dual Wield rogues, so Cole is most definitely out (iffy about his character as well). Will probably be alternating between Varric and Sera.

 

Warriors - Both Iron Bull and Cassandra (LI) seems really fun to have around, so unless Blackwall's personality is a surprise, he'll be left out.

 

Mages - I'm most likely fine with all of them, though I can see myself gravitating towards Vivienne and Dorian for Mass Heal and Haste respectively. They'll most likely also offer unique perspectives on their own cultures as well.

hmm,while there were definitely characters I didn't use until forced to in the Mass Effect series that's not really the case in Dragon Age for me. I do have my favourite team but I usually make sure that I take the others out as well to not miss out on any banter...

Who my PC takes with them has less to do with class spec and more to do with how those personalities, morals and outlooks mesh with my PC, so I can end up running a PC and a companion with the exact same spec because 'story'.

 

I also tend to pick a group and stick with that exact makeup for that entire run without swapping anyone out unless the story choices force me to. I try to make a point of not repeating a groups makeups on play throughs as well.  

 

That said I do have characters I don't really like and only get picked once for one play through just to hear their banter then go on the 'do not pick ever' pile.

Dog actually did have banter dialogue moments with different group members though I'm not sure it was quite as much as some of the others.  They all kind of go quiet after a point on me.  Has a funny scene when you first go to Denerim and he runs off, brings back a child, and you have this conversation about keeping him and he'll have to face the darkspawn and Dog takes him back where he found him.
