I usually play archers, and DA:O had me going for the Holy Triad (tank/heals/dps) on the higher difficulty settings.  In Awakening and DA2, I found less of a need for that.  I can usually run a full DPS party and outside of things like the Mother or the Forbidden One, I almost never needed a healer.

Velanna's not too bad if you can get her affection up.  That's the real trick, and admittedly, she's probably one of the b*tchest BioWare characters I've ever met.  She's a little kinder to the Dalish Warden though, but she's still very prickly at first.

Origins: Alistair is almost always with me. Morrigan sometimes because their banter is amusing but I'm more likely to take Wynne since she's not a bastard and then Leliana as the archer and "ogling" partner. I almost never bring the dog, even though he's good in combat. I always take him to kill Flemeth but he's simply not enough of a character to warrant his presence most of the time.

 

Awakening: Only played through it once but I took the Howe archer with me, Oghren, and Anders (he's not an annoying fruit like he is in DA2). Least used: Sigrun and the blonde elf girl. I never even picked up the elf because she was rude to me and I ran her off with some threats. Sigrun seemed okay but she started annoying me really quickly by saying "Fail" when I tried to open a box and then doing nothing but failing herself.

 

DA2: Isabela must be at Hawke's side cause we're in love and stuff. My favorite mage to have along is Bethany, but then she goes away so I replace her with either Anders or Merril, doesn't matter which. And of course, Varric. He's the storyteller, the funniest, most agreeable, and best friend to Hawke. I never take Fenris because I just have to kill him at the end anyway.

 

Inquisition (prediction): Iron Bull will probably be along a great deal. My mage will probably be Solas because he seems the most reasonable and quite useful to the plot. I'd like to mix it up and try other rogues but I still see Varric as by far the best of that bunch. Cole is like to be spurned by my party simply because he's a weirdo with emo hair. Vivienne sounds like an imperious b!tch and doesn't deserve to take part in the Inquisition, let alone my squad. And I'm afraid Sera won't be coming along much because I like her but she'll just be a tragic case of unrequited love like Traynor. What's the point?

Good question, but I will most likely go with:

 

Miss "I hate mages" for a Tank (Cassandra), Solas (secondary mage for crowd control, protective magics), Varric (would have taken the wild-card more, if she wasn't so anti-male...no, I don't have a thing against lesbians, but I tend to take people along I can actually romance...not that you can have Varric (unless they changed that recently?), but he is way funnier I think) and my PC-Character (probably another mage...I like them best...rogues are nice to play, too - don't like warriors too much though)

I have to say, that I typically enjoy 2-3 playthroughs before settling on what I consider to be a "canon" for me.  And then I play that repetitively on various characters of differing colors for the most minor of differences.  That means, once I settle on a canon my companion choices tend to be pretty well locked into place.

 

So that means, for me:

 

In Origins, I invariably played a rogue:

 

Most Used: Alistair (for tank goodness and because he looked hot when he bashed someone upside the head with his shield), Wynne (for heals, and that meant Broken Circle always came very early in my games), and the last was normally Zevran (because his banter was amusing)

 

Left at camp: Morrigan (had enough DPS already and she was always mean to Alistair), Dog (erhm ... he's a dog), and Logain (cause he was always dead first chance I had to make it so).

 

In Awakenings, I missed Alistair like mad:

 

Most Used: Anders (cause he made me lol so much), Nathaniel (cause he made me lol so much), and Justice (cause he made me lol so much).  What happened to Anders and Justice still breaks my heart, sigh.

 

Left in the keep: Velanna (at least I didn't kill her)

 

In DA2, I generally chose companions based on whatever affection/rivalry points I was trying to net:

 

Most Used: Fenris (because he made my mage promise to never go into a fight without him ... erhm, I mean total RP reasons), one of the two rogues (depended on the mission, for affection points), and whoever else the mission could net affection/rivalry with

 

Least Used: Anders (unless I was trying to earn rivalry points) and Aveline (because Fenris was already bashing people with a huge greatsword).  Anders, you broke my heart.

 

My predictions for DAI, eyeing a warrior class for canon:

 

Most Used: Dorian (he looks fascinating), Cole (because he IS fascinating), Solas (he's growing on me, like a fungus), and Bull (for the sheer humor)

 

Least Used: Vivienne (not looking too friendly, actually) and Sera (looking overly friendly, I'm getting Merrill vibes where she's concerned)

Hated Wynne so only used her when I absolutely had to. Shale was ok but I liked Sten better so she hardly got used. Hated Zevran, just too slimy for me and I was usually the mage with a lot of dmg so hardly ever used Morrigan.

 

 

DA2

Was a bit different, I mixed the group up regularly except for Aveline and Merrill. Hardly used either of them. Merrill I couldn't stand, she was just too naive and I guess a little bit of hate from DAO with her insensitive comments in the cave when we went to look for Tamlen. Aveline had a job as city guard captain, she had no time to follow me around, besides I prefered Fenris as my warrior.

 

DAI 

At the moment from what I have seen so far I am thinking Iron Bull, Cole and Sera/Varric (more often than Sera) will be my regular group. When I am not a mage probably Solas more than Dorian and Vivienne though they all will get some time out.

Playing as a rogue and romancing Leliana really made Zevran not that useful. Dog is adorable but not that's about it and Sten just didn't click with me that much. Still like the guy though!

I absolutely adore Sigrun so even with a rogue she was never in any danger of getting dropped. Velanna is interesting but I want a healer and Anders had by then taken that spot. Justice I always get last so he never actually get the chance to be used that much

Merill never really worked for me as I always wanted my mage to be primarily a healer and Anders was already set up for that. Sebastian.. well I already got Varric and Bianca so he got unlucky.

I have the feeling Varric and Cass are going to stay, with Bull, Blackwall, Dorian, Sera and...(the elf dude, damnit why can't I recall his name? Me sorry :[ ). Maybe Sera and Blackwall could replace Varric and Cass, though it'd be really, reaaally difficult with Varric, as he actually reminds me a lot of one of my best friends IRL.

And Cole? Well there have been companions that for roleplay reasons my PC would help in their first mission and not helping would be out of character, then after that the game says I've recruited them and I cannot make them go away. DAO's don't count, I may not want Wynne and Zevran to actually be in the party, but I don't want to kick them out, I actually like the characters. Velanna? By the time I'm done with the mine she joins, and for roleplay reasons my wardens would always let her go in to help try to save her sister, then they would make hergo pay for her crimes, not before, but the game doesn't let me do that.

Canon playthrough was as a Mage so I kinda negelected Merrill (I'm sorry merrill!), Carver was with the wardens most of the time and Sebastian was boring... I tried not to put Anders and Fenris in one party or Merrill with one of them. Their constant argument was unbearable.

I think I will go with everyone sometimes, at least for farming or side quest purpose. But for the most quests I'll go with Cole, Solas and Iron Bull. I don't want DA2 again with constant nagging in my back and if they can't get along they stay in thier room in skyhold. And I plan to play as an Archer. That means sadly my Quizzy takes Varric and Seras spot.

Well, I pretty much always have Varric there (he's narrating things, it's weird when he's talking about events he wasn't there for), and usually Fenris, who is my LI. Otherwise, I usually have a pretty good rotation happening. Well, except Sebastian. He's awkward to fit in to the active group, since Varric has essentially the same combat position.

 

I predict for Inquisition that I'll have Dorian as a mainstay of the team, but beyond him, I'm hoping that I'll get like in DA2, with a regular rotation of others. Though since Blackwall is the only character I've been uninterested in to date, I probably won't go out of my way to have him on the team, so he's got a good chance of being left behind a lot.

I first used the Sacred Ashes team after seeing the trailer and thinking it looked fun to recreate that! So anytime I play warrior I use them, otherwise I usually bring Alistair because he's my LI and Morrigan is just awesome.

Dog was sadly kind of useless so I never brought him along after Lothering, and I highly dislike both Oghren and Zevran's personalities so I tend not to use them, I also like Leliana better as a rogue.

Anders as my healer and the rest I really like their personalities and they are a balanced party in and of themselves.

 

Least Used: Oghren and Velanna.

Again, I really find their personalities grating and often kill or drive Velanna off when I meet her in game.

I like their personalities the best and Anders still is used as my healer.

I really dislike Fenris so I never use him, and I tend to only use Isabela if she is my LI.

I already don't like Cole from reading Asunder and can easily make Sera my dual weilder, and I love how Vivienne looks but don't know if I will like her personality yet.

DA:I I'll probably role with Cassandra for tankiness, Cole because he looks awesome (and you always need a rogue with you) and I'm still undecided on my third. It will either be Sera, Iron Bull or Solas. Solas is only an option because mages, along with warriors, now have locks/doors etc. that only they can open. I will be making a Warrior - Two Handed weapons (I don't know what they are called) so Solas might have to be my third to cover all ground. I won't be taking Vivienne with me, I just reckon she will be a snide b**** pretty much all the time.
