I have more than enough hardware to run this game, but I have Win 8.1 32bit system with no upgrade possibility to it.  There are tons of people who have Win 7 and Win 8 32bit systems... you have excluded all of them.  I am totally dissappointed in Bioware once more.. they've just shot themselves in the foot once again.  No sale to me.

In order to take advantage of dual-core and up processors, an OS would have to be 64 bit.  And almost all CPUs being sold these days are dual, quad, and even 6 or 8 cores.

I don't think they were being spiteful of people with older computers.  If anything, they would have been criticized by others if it wasn't 64 bit.  I know that that was one of the criticisms of the Sims 4, for example, when people saw it as being dumbed down.

64 bit is the future

Shadow of Mordor requires it, evil within. Alien Isolation doesnt but the do require 4gb and 32 bit OS only has 3.5

Or they will simply switch to the console version, as a friend of mine decided, cause she already has the PS4 and would need another 400+$ to upgrade her pc to play the game to setting that meets her standarts.

64 bit is the future

No. 64-bit is the present.

And as you point out, since a 32-bit OS can't even reach the minimum RAM requirement, whether 32-bit is supported is moot. They could say they support Win7 32, but it wouldn't matter, since no Win7 32 machine can have enough RAM.

Gaming has to move forward at some point. We have to start utilizing or taking advantage of 4-6 core technology. While I wont be playing on a PC I think its a good move. If people dont want to spend money on new tech, theyre gonna get left behind.

Oh yes. Definitely the Present (and the future)

Aren't consoles 64 bit anyway? (Only one I know for certain is the N64 but good luck playing DA:I on that :P)

When I still had a 32-bit system and needed a 64-bit one I was pissed too. I know how it feels. I was pissed when Just Cause 2 came out and needed DX 10 as a minimum. The previous speakers are right, 64-bit is the future and it should already be the present.

why can't you just clean install win8.1 64bit? If your cpu doesn't support it then I highly doubt that it's "more than enough hardware to run this
game"

If you seriously want to play this game and lack a 64 bit OS you could just dual boot the Windows 10 preview in till you can get your hands on an actual copy of an 64 bit OS. I've tried out BF4 on Windows 10 using another machine that I own and it works fine.

He might have an OEM edition disc which just has 32 bit only on it and doesn't have enough money to buy another disc.

80% of users have a 64 bit Win 7 or 8

11.68% have Win 7 32 bit

<1% have Win 8 or 8.1 32 bit

It's really time to move on.

For people using Windows 7 32 bit, CD keys are not locked to 32 or 64 bit, so if you possess a legal key, you can get a Win 7 64 bit ISO from MS Digital River free and legally.

Therefore the 1% who are using 32 bit Win 8 are the only ones screwed so to say. Hardly a huge number.

It's almost trivial to find a 64-bit disk image for any version of windows, and his current product key will still work.

Seriously, guys, at this point you'd have to be trying really hard to not have a 64-bit capable machine at all, let alone one that can still play games.

@OP

Are you aware that 32bit OS are not able to manage more than 4GB of RAM ? 32bit OS are bound to disappear.

Exactly. I wonder why Microsoft even bothered with a 32 bit version for Windows 8. 64 bit has been the present for quite some years by now but only game developers have been slow to completely adopt it because of the last gen consoles. But even then any PC gamer should have moved to 64 bit years ago, and many have according to Steam.

OEM 32-bit product keys will not work with a 64-bit OEM OS. That's a perk only to retail versions of Windows so it requires him to obtain another key. That is the limitations for OEM licensed products. This is assuming he's using OEM and not retail.

Just activate it anyway and then call the number and provide the digits that windows throws up. That's how I got my new key when I built a new system

Business clients.

Lotd of businesses (and government offices) ate swimming in old hardware. They may not be able to run a 64-bit OS, but MS doesn't want to lose them as customers.

Especially since they ended support for XP.

It is totally pointless to install a 32-bit OS on your "more than enough" hardware. That was your own short-sightedness.

It's like saying the movie industry is going bust because they no longer support VHS or the internet will never take off because of libraries.

You need to grow with the times.

Not for Windows 8 OEM unfortunately. Microsoft really wanted to ensure that a licence lived and died with an OEM machine. The licence is no longer a sticker, it is embedded into the BIOS. OEM Win 8 ISOs are not freely available like Win 7 was. If you need to reinstall Windows 8, every machine has a backup partition.

Which can be a PITA when your HD fails. The weird thing is that apparently MS lets you use an ISO to get yourself up and running, but they won't give it to you themselves. Wouldn't help the OP since his key isn't for a 64-bit version.

Maybe this explains the lack of special editions for PC? Does anyone have data on the take-up of 64 bit windows in the US compared to the rest of the world? (64 windows user myself, really it's a no brainer).

A lot of places just show market share than region and don't really show if it's 32 bit or 64 bit.  I only found steam being the only one that I've found that focuses on which version. Still those are global numbers.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of business PCs still run 32-bit in the US. The stuff they were putting on desktops ten years ago is still just fine for most people's actual jobs.
