And the transition to cars lost many, many people that prefered to travel by horse-riding.

Is that a proper metaphor? :P

Not really, unless we're talking about some entity that REQUIRED people to drive cars.

Generally that's almost always a bad idea IMO, but in this case we're talking about an individual developer's choice, not some government standard like CAFE or something.

nono. problem is that computers with x32 systems are not old.

as it now there is a lot of ready systems of 7 and 8 with x32 type. on the sale right now. for home, business etc.

basically x64 systems are only need for profs and dedicated gamers, average joe most likely has x32 system.

If only there was a company like say Sony that made a simple mass produced gaming system for the average joe who wasn't interested in dealing with PC gaming.

I have more than enough hardware to run this game, but I have Win 8.1 32bit system with no upgrade possibility to it.  There are tons of people who have Win 7 and Win 8 32bit systems... you have excluded all of them.  I am totally dissappointed in Bioware once more.. they've just shot themselves in the foot once again.  No sale to me.

I beg to differ, isn't the minimum spec for RAM 4gb? a 32 bit OS cannot utilize more than 4gb of total system memory, that includes graphics memory (so if you have a 512mb graphics card then the total amount of RAM your OS can utilize is only 3.5GB which falls short of the minimum requirements).

I guess my question is how many of those systems could have handled DAI anyway without upgrades. Your average joe would upgrade by replacing the PC, wouldn't he?

I've been building my own PCs for over ten years, and even I didn't understand until maybe a year ago that a 64-bit OS was all that important--and even back then, I had the same system specs I have now, which are slightly above recommended.

And if your average joe couldn't play the game, I highly doubt your average joe would buy a new computer just for that. Your average joe would say, "pass on this game."

Wait. You mean you bought 8GB of RAM without knowing that you'd need a 64-bit OS to actually use the RAM?

Sure. My point was that I don't think there are actually very many people for whom the OS is the only limiting factor. If the PC wouldn't run DAI anyway, it doesn't matter what the OS is. How many machines with a 4870 or better shipped with 32-bit OSes?

Yes. Silly I know, but I simply wasn't aware. And it wasn't like there were many (if any) games demanding more than 4 GB (heck, here we are with DA I and its BARELY going over the 32 bit limit, kind of a waste if you think about it).

Imagine if you didn't follow gaming news at all (I didn't very much until the last year or so), just played games as you saw them. Most of the things that we think are obvious are actually the result of communication with others who know less than us in some areas and more than us in others.

I'll be honest I wouldn't know the answer to the second question because the only retail PC I've bought in ten years was my laptop, I really have no idea what OS those guys (HP, Dell, all them) typically put on a PC.

u can  never be     more than enough

since 32bits ONLY allow 3.2G RAM

and u should have at least 4G to run the game

Well, it's not a waste if the performance really is noticeably better with more RAM. I wonder how DAI will run on min spec.

Good thing you bought the 64-bit, then.

It's almost a waste for DA I because they're only using an additional .5 GB of RAM. You'd think there'd be things they could do with 8 GB, for example.

By and large, though, the specs do seem a bit low.

You an upgrade your version of 32 bit os to 64 bit free of charge. Keys work interchangably. You just need to get a 64 bit version off technet, dreamspark etc.

i believe you can't change OEM keys. so if you have x32 system via OEM you will stick with it. not 100% sure about that though. difference in the price is huge.

however i must say one thing about DAI and BW/EA. They are honest about requirements. You need x64 system in order to play this game, x32 just won't do. Because there are some developers and publishers who may trick you.

That's just the minimum specs. That doesn't mean that additional RAM won't be used. In fact, I think the recommended specs include 8GB RAM...

There probably are, since 8 GB is recommended. I wouldn't be surprised if 4GB rigs get the same reduced background NPC counts as the older consoles do, plus whatever other compromises they made.

The engine scales down well. I can run BF4 on my crappy dual-core/6670 rig.

Ah, you're right. I was looking at the thread wrong: I looked below for the recommended specs and didn't pay attention to the heading. Nvm that then.

About scaling, PC games pretty much universally scale well (except for really crappy or unoptimized engines like RED or Disrupt). But I was talking about the recommended specs: The recommended specs is a GPU that costs 150 bucks, and a CPU that costs around the same.

It makes me wonder if Bioware doesn't think that "recommended" means "with all graphical options enabled" @ 1080p and 60 FPS. In other words, is it actually informative.

"Recommended" specs generally apply for all options on above average settings with a smooth framerate. Really high options like Ultra probably require more.

I just want to point out that having a 32-bit OS you can technically override the 4GB limitation. By using PAE (Physical Address Extension) you can access all of your memory; however, this feature is built into windows servers and turned off by default. There is a third-party patch which you can implement into your desktop OS. With additional steps to make it work. You can have all of your memory fully accessible on your 32-bit OS. Still, it acts funny since it's a third-party driver and does comes with other issues.

That being said it doesn't mean by doing all of that you can play the game. The game itself could very well be a 64-bit application which would just flat out refuse to start.

by hardware alone? any (by money within range of 500 euro easy).

by software such as OS? none.

All the new big games are now 64 bit . One says it isnt but still requires 4GB of ram.

There are tons of benefits from 64 bit os (like opening a lot of tabs and still having ram to do other things left over)

Sure. My point was that a system that came with a GTX760 would have likely come with a 64-bit OS pre-installed. Who was selling rigs with a card that good and a 32-bit OS in 2013?

and these systems have win8 x32 as default OS. Price range from 500 to 600 euro(depends on video adapter).
