So my friend was originally dead set on getting me an Asus laptop to replace my dead dinosaur laptop for Christmas with the following specs in the hope I could game decently.

Windows 8.1
RAM 8 GB DDR3
Intel Quad-Core Baytrail-M N2930 1.83 GHz (turbo up to 2.16 GHz)
Hard Drive 1 TB
Intel UMA Graphics

One of the awesome people here on the forums informed me the graphics card was not compatible. (You are a life saver!)

The question now is what would work? My friend has a 500-600 minimum range to spend.

PS4.

Comparing that laptop with a PS4, the console wins in gaming performance. So unless you need the PC for school/work, in your case I'd stick to the console.

Or if you really, really want a PC that can play the game at a comparable level with a console, go for a desktop PC, not a laptop.

I'd suggest, since you're on a laptop and not a mobile device, sticking with Windows 7.  You can always get a new OS later, but Windows 8 looks pretty broken and will probably be replaced by Windows '15 in the not-too-distant-future, based on the history of that particular franchise.  They've got good ideas, but they don't always work out in practice as well as they did on paper.  Anyone lose a computer to ME Pro?  I've not heard anything at all good about v. 8 except that it works on mobile devices, and since you're not using one, why subject yourself to the agony?  Wait for the fixes to all come out and hop on the next version.

8.1 isnt that bad. Sure theres the charms menu and the start menu isnt that great. The rest of it is good and third party products can fix the start menu and boot you to desktop.

A true gaming laptop is out of your price range. But anything in the Nvidia 600 range will be okay ish.

I have a hp Envy DV6 which has a 635m so I'll be playing DA:I on that when I move.

Would an Nvidia GeForce GT 730M work?

For that price, you're only going to be able to game decently if you buy a desktop. Laptops for gaming are large, hot, heavy and much more expensive than their desktop equivalents.

If you have a limited budget, the PS4 version will probably give you a better experience.

Not sure the CPU is compatible either, even on minimums?  Not sure what "Turbo" does?

sorry i can't recommend any laptop under 800 dollars to play games like DAI on, even then you are looking at the laptop struggling. If you were to be getting a desktop on the other hand then you could build something very nice that would handle it for about $600

It's just a factory overclock those cpus can do under heavy loads. Don't think its designed to keep it sustained for long periods though.

On topic, best bet is buying a ps4/xbone.

If you really want a pc though: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qNk2xr ~$550
