The problem is that the male animation is neutral, and the female animation is exaggerated. They should both be neutral, or we should be allowed to choose.

Exactly. Especially when they are doing something that requires balance and keeping a reasonable centre of gravity, such as combat or hiking around in mountainous areas.

Gender neutral walk.....what the hell is that? Not saying that I'm against what is being originaly debated here, but you say that the "male animation" is "neutral" .Doesn't that say exactly where the problem is? The male animation is considered neutral...so if a female character has a neutral animation, she would be walking like a male...

I smell trouble ahead coming from people who would say that the "male animation" was imposed to them. I'm not bringing any solutions as I do not see a middle ground between people who would feel it's objectifying or exagerated and people who think it's not feminine enough. It really is just a dilemma the devs had to deal with and they made this choice; either way not everyone would have been happy.

The Dragon Age games are marketed at men.

Not really. If they were, they wouldn't spend as much resources on female characters and romance options.

Dragon Age has a large female demographic compared to other AAA titles.

It's a default walk.

Run ME2/3 with MShep and then with FemShep, they walk/sit/whatever the same way.

Causes problems when FemShep wears the skirt (which was very annoying), but I can't recall anyone really noticing (or caring) otherwise.

Yes!!  Those arms sticking out at a 45 degree angle.

I can't.

I just can't.

Yeah! What on earth is up with that?! Agh.

I still find it sad that "male" is considered as "neutral".

LLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLL

Femshep should have totally been given a N7 jacket and jeans.  The dress would only have worked during that red carpet scene in the Citadel DLC.

Wow, taken completely out of context and blown way out of proportion. And rude, very, very rude. I simply wanted both in play and out of play to match. The comment was directed at a poster not BioWare and said poster and I cleared things up right quick.

Is your resolution supposed to be relevant to you calling the developers efforts "sad sad excuses"?

Wanting matching animations is perfectly fine. Offhandedly calling the developers lazy and "sad" is inappropriate and deserves to be called out.

I'm with you OP, I don't care for the male animations being used for the female either. I don't want an overexaggerated female animation, but something a bit more feminine would be nice. Sadly, I doubt this will change.

They have an over-exaggerated female walk and it looks ridiculous.

Kids from RPG Codex were moaning earlier about non-feminine females but the females in this game run in an over-exaggerated feminine way so they clearly got their wish for more feminine women and warrior women wearing make-up to battle (LOL!) which is another ridiculous factor. Even how the female character stands is ridiculous (and also a problem in the second game which also had female characters sway their hips when they were running).

I don't know what any prepubescent teen who likes these animations are on but I prefer more realism than anything, if a woman is going to be thrown into a heavy suit of armor, I don't think she would be able to sway her hips when running. Give something gender-neutral at the very least like every other RPG with gender selection does. No need to make over-exaggerated animations to please the teens and unique animations are a waste of resource if you ask me.

+1. The animations were mo-capped from a man. They are not gender neutral.

This is pretty odd. I see quite a few people complaining that the FemInq's walk is too feminine and now the cut scene walk is too masculine.

Inconsistency annoys people.

I'm not sure why that's surprising.

I have no idea what a 'male' walk is, tbh, without contrasting it to various exaggerated gaits.

Edit: this is going to be one of *those* threads, isn't it?

Of all the things that could go wrong with this game, this is one of my least worries.

Bioware would lose over half their fanbase overnight if they did this. I sure as heck wouldn't stick around.

A boon for Bioware then, that their female fans are less picky whilst requesting parity. >_>

I mean... The "male" walk is the least stylized walk. Men don't often care to exaggerate hip movement and neither do many women. Shouldn't the default simply be the one without the gaits? It just happens to be the male one in practice....

Let's not further throw oil on the fire...unless "some people just want to watch the world burn"!!! :o

Then you didn't follow the ME2 and ME3 boards very closely. It came up quite a bit.

But why does the inquisitor have to have the same posture as Cassandra?

Frankly, the skirt bit was an unfortunate consequence of using same animations, which was virtually unnoticeable throughout the game.

I don't think an unintentionally funny scene is worth the cost of unique animations, especially when women in active duty walk without gaits to begin with.

But I suppose that as a male, I have a different perspective of things and this issue may be important to women.

What if....

They made a last minute change and now FemInq has male animations outside of cutscenes as well? There would then be no discrepancy.  That would be grand.

Too bad about Cass, though.

If only I could use the male animation on the FemInquisitor all the time, this should be an option in the next game.
