I'm starting to remeber why I left this game in the first place.

That stuff happens to everyone now and then. If it happens all the time, something is wrong.

First thing to do is make sure that the Ethernet cable is plugged in.

It's always annoying when it happens, yes, but it's not so frequent. If it happens too often for you, there's probably something wrong with your Internet connection, or maybe someone is downloading / uploading big files in your house.

Hmmmm, looks like I need to mess about with my ports then. Odd that I don't have problems with other multiplayer games.

Sometimes it feels like multiplayer was coded by four year olds.

WRT ME3 Sever the only thing you can fault them for is checking for connection as often as they do, but if they didn't you wouldn't get in game challenge point updates.  So that is a tradeoff.

Not odd. ME3 is consistent in its inconsistency.

Before messing about with your ports, check that your are ONE: connected by Ethernet cable and not wifi, and TWO: that UPnP is enabled in your router.

Confirm those are correct, and only if it still doesn't work should you mess with other stuff.

Whether or not UPnP will be the cause or solution to your problem may depend on the router and firmware.  Some people find the connection is more stable one way and others have to forward ports manually.  I never noticed a difference either way.

What I can notice is sometimes the signal strength from the cable company will become volatile, but that is basically beyond my control.

I do remote-->cable to console--> cable to local router--> cable to main router--> net.... Rarely i disconnect and the ping is excellent. Every time I try to wifi I get lag...

i'm switching all the routers/gateways/whatever they call them to enterprise class 10GB.... because FU** lag...

Poor S/N will cause a reconnection that will result in your router getting a different IP address, which will break the connection to the ME3 server. As you say, beyond your control, apart from getting the electrician to check the cabling voltages (I once moved into an apartment and the line had the wrong voltage by an order of magnitude). The quality of your router can make a huge difference too.

Walter, while it will be nice to have that stuff, making your home network an order of magnitude faster will not speed up your experience when your Internet connection is an order of magnitude slower....

Interesting. I have never played ME3MP over WiFi vs. Ethernet on the same hardline, but my experiences with UMTS (weekdays) vs. DSL (weekends) are consistent with what you are proposing. Although the nominal transfer speed of the two connections that I use is nearly identical, the UMTS one is atrocious with lag and finding games on ME3 while DSL/Ethernet is usually fine. With normal internet usage, there is no perceivable difference.

I suspect that it has to do with packet loss, but damned if I know if there is anything that can be done about it.

Yes, but I'm fortunate enough to live in LA and have a good connection (with AT&T... bleach...) that top 30mb/5mb down/up with a very low ping. So, most of the issues were WiFi related for me... And I do some work at home that require a better connection intranet anyway....

It could be packet loss but EVEN WITHOUT PACKET LOSS you will get lag on MOST wifi connections. (The exceptional case being that yours is the only wifi router for about 1000m and you have a single user - you - connected at short range. This is not the case for most people.)

The worst part about wifi is that the lag is beyond your control because other routers will cause verification collisions that will cause jitter spikes, exactly the things that are hardest for the netcode to compensate for.

For most people, who live in wifi-noisy environments, the only way to minimise lag when using wifi is to have computer and router close enough (< 1 or 2m) that you could easily plug in the cable anyway.

That's all good, only it really isn't going to affect your in-game lag and I don't want you to be disappointed  ;)

Ethernet cables are sold in metre lengths. Using lignes or chains as a measure would have required conversion.

Ark and I had a synchronised disconnect last night. Although given that half my friends list disappeared at the same time I think that might have been live going down, rather than the EA servers.

I'll blame EA anyway, if that's ok with everyone.

Could we blame Live as well, to save time later?

It's the strangest thing, but I can 100% confirm that continuously playing with Rusty has led to our disconnects becoming synchronized

Ok, but don't make this weird. I'm not about to start sharing LAN cables with you or anything like that.

The BEST cables are sold by the carat. I paid $2,500 for this HDMI cable and it's completely eliminated all my lag. You can trust me because I always check my facts before posting nonsense to bulletin boards.
