Why does anyone like this?
The more time Carver spends focused on Merrill, the less he spends being a douche towards Hawke.

Let's... uh... replace deviance with preference there, yes? Talk about loaded language. That word's at least a 45 slug.

Right... then when he gets past the infatuation stage, he can spend his time being a douche to Merrill. Wonderful.

Except he was never an ass to Merrill. He was always sweet, even if a little flustered when talking to her. He wasn't a douche to her at all.

He's still in the infatuation stage. When that passes, things would collapse.
The more time Carver spends focused on Merrill, the less he spends being a douche towards Hawke.
Well, that helps.
And part of it is that he's really, really nice to Merrill, despite being such a crabby Cathy normally (and apparently a bit of a womanizer, if I was getting the right read off that letter). So maybe the kid has it bad, and that's adorable. Carver's full of hot air, and Merrill's pretty good at deflating him. I find that cute.

Carver really just resented Hawke and therefore he had little tolerance for the plight of mages. I don't think he actually disliked them on the whole... he was kind of a complicated man. Unfortunately, Carver's negative characteristics tended to be rather prominent, and so his redeeming traits are often overlooked or ignored...
How can Craver spend time with Merrill when she's all over that mirror?
He'd wish there's a reflection in that mirror, at least he can pretend she looks at him from time to time.
Carver can carry that torch for a while. He's still pretty nice years later, when, depending on your choices, he may have changed a fair amount.
BS. You have no proof of that whatsoever.
I have the fact that he's a prickly douche who hits on Isabela at the same time as Merrill (his attraction clearly can't be that deep) who's willing to join the templars. I neither like nor trust Carver, and would only do so after he was a Grey Warden for a while, by Act 3 (similarly, I'd only want to romance Isabela after fully rivaling her).
In terms of how the word is generally used, no. And most people have no obligation to marry or make babies either (including, interestingly, the Dalish).
Considering the purpose of the act of sex to Thedas is copulation; a departure from that would be deviance considering that's the definition.
who's willing to join the templars.
A band warriors with which he can and does excel thus building his own name and reputation away from his sibling?
That really doesn't strike me as overly negative considering the Templar Order is a group of renown knights.
Carver is shy towards Merrill, but still wants to appear as a manly man towards Isabela since she's...let's just say easier to access. Perfect example is Oghren Sigrun.
And that's the point of having a brother, to be a douche to each other and be there for each other.

Certainly a departure from many who prefer it for pleasure. I'll need a citation for your first statement.
Carver never hit on isabela once. That was completely one sided and all Isabela. Seems to me you're just angry someone else showed an interest in Merrill more than anything.
Mhmm.
I agree. Carver may have been an ass, but not once did he ever do or say anything mean to Merrill. He was nothing but kind to her.Carver never hit on isabela once. - Isabela: You certainly fill out a skirt Carver. A shame, I suppose you're all religious and such now.
- Carver: Do you know how long the Chant of Light is? How much stamina it requires?
- Isabela: Go on...
- Carver: With passion'd breath comes darkness, but with many against Her, She finds His light untiring as it parts the Veil.
- Isabela: Not sure if I'm aroused or scared. I like it.
That's not Carver flirting; that's Isabela getting sexual pleasure from something. That's pretty much her entire character with anyone not Hawke.

So what if he flirted with Isabela? That doesn't say crap about his relationship with Merrill, which certainly meant a hell of a lot more to him than a few lines of flirtation with Isabela.

Well, he stands up to be counted with the enemy of everything the Dalish stand for, so I'm not sure if we should give a damn what he thinks.
Makes you wonder why Carver isn't rotting away in the Deep Roads in Xil's playthroughs.

Agreed 100%.

The word "deviant" has a colloquial meaning that has negative connotations beyond "deviating from the norm". Let's not play semantics.
