This is why I have mixed feelings about racial bonuses in games. It makes it so the best warrior will always be the tanky race, or whatever.

Dwarf: 25% magic defense

Elf: 25% ranged defense

Qunari: 10% melee defense

Human: 1 extra ability point

But what I'm asking about is that ability point and how balanced this is. Because in the previous two Dragon Age games, one ability point meant, like, 0.5 attack power, as I recall, and your stats would get into the dozens. So is this supposed to be more like Dungeons & Dragons or something, where a single point can be kind of a big deal?

I know we don't get points to distribute on level-up, but I thought we get points on gear.

Ability point means a talent/spell, like Mighty Blow or Stonefist.  Not an attribute point like strength, dexterity etc

According to Laidlaw, it's like getting a free level.

What Wulfram said. Interesting, apparently it's also applied when you first level up, so you'll actually start with the same abilities as other races, but you'll get 2 ability points at level 2 instead of 1.

Some (at least) abilities also give attribute points, so it's an ability/upgrade/mode and a boost to a stat of your choice.

From a power-gaming perspective the dwarf racial followed by the elven racial are best by far.

Dwarven warrior tank Inquisitor would be a walking fortress.

I like the human bonus, getting a free spell/talent point is great in my book, due to the huge amount of great passives we can pick.

Does anybody know if human party members also get this bonus?  Do any racial bonuses apply to party members?

Been this way since Gygax, no?

It's fine. In a game you can replay as many times you like, it's fine...

Only Origins dwarves got a racial bonus we could see, and as I recall they did in Origins and Awakening, no bonuses in 2, so it seems likely, though we probably don't get to choose the extra point for our human companions unless we can reset their skills.

I think, if companions do get racial bonuses, it'll be fun trying to figure which ability in the default builds of Cassandra, Dorian, and Blackwall is their "extra" one(and Cole, too, I suppose... But I don't really consider him "human").

Yeah, the site does and I suppose having ??? for a species might be awkward. But he's not human, he's a spirit. Justice wasn't human, and he definitely had a body, Cole may not even have that.

If you've looked at the skill trees, a lot of passives are incredibly powerful.  If you just think of the extra ability as one more free passive, it's nothing to sneeze at!

So the extra ability point, is one we get only at lvl 2 or is it every lvl?

I think it's starting when you can first select abilities, whether that's level two or in character creation, though it doesn't seem character creation includes abilities.

So long as they get an extra point, I don't mind using respec on the human companions... I am hoping they fully implemented racial bonuses for all characters, even though the free ability point would give the humans an unfair advantage (in my mind anyways).

... a free talent point every level?  Do you not realize how OP that would be?  o_O

I don’t fully agree, for melee characters the dwarf will clearly be the most powerful while for ranged characters the human will be the best. If defense works the same way as it did in DA2 and caps out at 80% it means that the extra defense ratings will probably be mostly useless on higher levels since defense only governs your characters ability to avoid an attack.

An extra ability point though has always been a big deal in the Dragon age games especially DA2.

Rouges with good equipment will probably be able to cap their defense even if they are a human while the mages wont be able to get high enough defense for the bonus to really matter. Even if a rouge cant cap their def it will probably not matter much since they have stealth.

The “power” ranking will probably look like this:

For Melee:

Dwarf, Human, Elf, Qunari.

For Ranged:

Human, Dwarf, Elf, Qunari.

Mike said in one of the twitch videos you get a bonus ability point the first time you level up in game, which was supposed to be relatively soon after it starts. So probably during the intro/tutorial/whatever.

Elder one vs. a mage who has mastered every spell. Ever. How bad could it be?

Be lulz if the Elder One had uber-spell resistance.

Or had templar training.
The elder one is actually a red-templar voltron.

Wasn't  Dwarven Noble Templar/Reaver a walking fortress in origins?
