What should I look for in a motherboard?

I'll also accept recommendations.

I'm building a PC, i5 or i7 CPU. Gigantic AMD video card. I'm putting it in a standard ATX case.

What should I keep in mind as I browse?

That would a question more suited for a techie-forum.

That said: socket, chipset, compatible memory, PCIe x16 slots, PCIe x1 slots, SATA connectors, possibly M.2 connectors, USB connectors, ethernet and of course overall build quality.

Z-chipset if you buy a K-CPU and want to overclock it.
H-chipset if not.
also, dont buy a MB that has "gaming" in its name^^

My motherboard is Intel and I'm mostly content with it.

Not this (but another 2011 intel MB):

Not really. The MSI Gaming series Mobos are good. Not the best, but definately not bad.

I'd stick with Asus motherboards though, their overall build quality is the best right now, followed by Gigabyte and then MSI.

and usually more expensive than equal models of the same manufacturer without "gaming".

This is what I have, MSI's Z97 MPower Max.

I bought it without reading any reviews because I needed an LGA 1150 mobo badly. It doesn't have the word "gaming" on it if that matters to you. :D

Depends on the retailer more often than not.

I've seen the very same Mobo on two different retailers with a price difference of up to forty bucks. Note I'm not denying that some of those labels are for nothing more than charging extra for it, but it's not an universal rule that they are overpriced. Then again, I have the policy or waiting for reviews on every piece of hardware I'm oggling (and it always just stays at oggling, because I have too little money to buy stuff ..., but I like oggling!).

That's handy advice. I didn't know what the H/Z dichotomy meant.

Check out websites like Guru3D, hardwareluxx, techbuyersguru, etc.! Particularily the last one has a solid assortment of guides you can use to read yourself into for better understanding of the technoblabble some hardware reviews might throw your way.
