Anyone else intrigued by the idea of being a "divine figure"?

I'm an atheist but I find myself rather fascinated by the idea of my character being thought of as some kind of divine figure. It brings out some neat role-playing possibilities. It would be pretty interesting if the inquisitor could have the option of becoming the new leader of the chantry and have people worship him or something. The whole Herald of Andraste thing sounds like a great excuse to attain a ridiculous amount of wealth and power =P

I know i am despite being an atheist myself. Jesus Trevelyan/Lavellan has a nice ring to it.

People always worship the PC in bioware games, I guess it makes a bit of a change to formalise it.

I'm also atheist in real life but I always find myself devout to Andraste and the Maker in game. Being the herald is perfect for my pious Trevelyan, I'm not looking for people to worship me, I'd much rather use my title to spread the influence of the Chantry. Doesn't seem like a popular idea from what I see on these forums, but that's just how I go about it.

Based on the recent demo, I'd say you wouldn't have to worry about that. I agree it would suck if we didn't have the option to reject the idea of being some kind of divine figure.

Yea I wish they had not gone this route. Makes no sense to me if you are playing as Dalish or Qunari but perhaps they will explain it away in the actual game...but still

Not really. I don't do well around worshippers, any kind and degree. Though I find it in the Inquisitor an interesting concept to explore. Just because it's way out of my comfort-zome and morals

I'm intrigued by it too, I want to see how people react to the Inquisitor and whether they people feel that Inq's afforded more or less respect because of their supposed divine situation.

I also wonder if our Inquisitors will have the option to abuse it for all it's worth, and for extremely petty things:

"I don't need to pay for apples, I'M THE HERALD OF ANDRASTE!"

"So what if I took your shoes? I'M THE HERALD!"

"You don't like my tone? THE HERALD TALKS HOWEVER SHE PLEASES!"

"You telling me I can't let agitated fennecs loose in Halamshiral? NUH-UH, DIVINE!"

I have a feeling the Herald is gonna need a throat lozenge when all is said and done.

Ok...

They already did explain it in the last stream.  Watch it when the Dalish elf declines the title of Herald of Andraste.  I kind of love how quick people are to dismiss Bioware when they have provided evidence of the contrary of the exact thing they are being criticized for.

Anyway, Dragon Age is a fantasy series.  Just because you are an atheist in real life, does not mean gods and demons and spirits and other things the various religions of Thedas are based on do not actually exist in the game.  Also, who cares if you are playing a Dalish or Qunari and people think you are a herald of andraste?  If Andrastians hear stories about what happened at Haven and see fade tears opening in the sky and you closing them, of COURSE an Andrastian is going to have a religious explanation concerning THEIR religion and not the beliefs of your PC.

Perceptions exist in real life and in Thedas.  You shouldn't expect Bioware to meta-game their creation based on your religious beliefs or those of your character.  "Oh I'm making a Dalish elf so how dare bioware have characters think I'm blessed by Andraste!  My character doesn't belief in Andraste!" Yeah - exactly, that's already been addressed in the footage we've seen and is likely to be a theme in the game.

It makes perfect sense because it's based on peoples perceptions of the Inquisitor, the inquisition and the events in the game.  How you deal with those perceptions is likely a significant part of the gameplay and story...

This.  Sure, we should have the option to turn it down, or be moderate in how you use the title... But the real test is whether or not you can embrace the title, and play as though you actually believe it.  Where the explanation for whatever the Inquisitor does can be, essentially, "I'm the Herald of Andraste.  I can do/say whatever I want, and if you defy me, you defy the Maker and deserve death."

I'm intrigued if this herald talk disapears into the background as the game progresses. Can't imagine why they would want to pin some pseudo-religious trapping onto the main character. It's an easy way to get the church to accept you as leader of the Inquisition if you are john the baptist.. oh wait.

It will be fun to "defy expectation" but I would prefer for my non-Andrastian characters not to be associated with the Chantry at all. No Herald. Just Inquisitor. There is only so many times the "I'm not the Herald" - With prejudice dialogue option would be remotely entertaining.

I like the idea of gaining power and having people bow to my mage, since it goes against the chantry that mages shouldn't rule over man. In fact, I wonder if playing as a mage leading the inquisition will upset some people, I hope so.

I know this sounds odd, but as long as I can opt out of it with a modicum of success, I'll try an Inquisitor who embraces it. I actually find it interesting and yes, it has great roleplaying potential, but if the game offers me no alternative my annoyance about being forced into the role and especially the resulting pro-faith bias of the story will prevent me from enjoying it.

Yes, and we already know you can opt out of it and outright deny the title.  Nothing to worry about.

I completed all the avatar challenges in Ultima IV.

I consider Ultima IV an authority on the subject, and according to that game, I am now a divine perfect person.

Not really.

Whether my character is a divine figure/prophet/whatever or simply your everyday destined hero/bla bla makes no difference to me. The only thing that would intrigue me is if I can roleplay a flat earth atheist and maliciously play those ingame characters' divine perception against them.

So as apparently one of the only non-Atheists on this forum (lol) I am actually intrigued by it.

I think it would depend on the character I'm playing on if I would accept it or not. I think my qunari wouldn't care but my human would probably embrace it.

Personally in the gamescon demo (where I first heard the Inquisitor called this) I thought it was very atmospheric and cool to have the barbarian leader shout that at you, it made it feel more like a personal challenge. I suppose he could have just said "Inquisitor!" but idk, I like the idea that you are viewed by others as something you may or may not be as well as liking it or maybe not liking it.

And even if you try to tell people you're not the  Herald, that doesn't mean they won't still think of you as that. There's all sorts of fiction out there with "chosen one" types that hate being treated like a chosen one.

It's a title could be equally useful/dangerous, so yeah, I imagine it might lead to some pretty interesting situations.
