You might find this interesting. I took the large shed and added a slightly rounded snow cap, then split the snow parts off into a separate model. This was then added to an effect file and is shown below within game.

The snow cap effect also takes shadows so it looks just like a regular placeable. You just need to position it at the same location as the base placeable. It should be feasible to do this for just about any of the placeables, or at least the ones that can collect snow on top.

There's no way to scale it, unfortunately. Oh well.

Why make it an effect when you can just use the snow cap version placeable? With the placeable, you can scale (and tint the snow yellow, teehee ;-) ).

Mmm, well then you don't need to modify the placeables.2da file. *shrug* It's not important; I just wanted to see how much work it would be to create a decent heavy snow cover.

The downside of the effect is that it won't show up on the area map or minimap. A placeable would.

If you apply the effect to the placeable then it will scale along with it. Or at least it will for non-static placeables. I'm not sure if static placeables will take an SEF. If not, you could always apply the SEF to a non-usable collision box. Then scale the box to match the scale of the house, and the effect will scale along with it.

I use the collision box method to scale down animated flags.

Unfortunately, the effect as I built it doesn't show up in game when I set it as the placeables special effect. I can't just use a skin because I want it to have some bulk above the placeable exterior.

It should do, if it's an ordinary model effect.

Okay, it works if I make the shed non-static.

Anyway, I was thinking it might make a nice little X-mas project--having a set of rural buildings and placeables with snow caps in a snowy setting...

I think what I'd like to do is start building a set of visual effects, because those can be easily used retroactively on a snowy area without having to replace a bunch of placeables. For example, I want to try using them on an existing snowy village area prefab to see what type of visual improvement I can gain.

However, as the effects just use what will be already textured models that are sized to fit the corresponding placeables, it would be trivially easy for an interested person to just merge them together and create a new set of placeables. In that way builders would have both options available. Assuming there is any interest...

Snow in the middle of summer? What a strange concept. :P

Don't worry, it would take place in the mountains, where you could believe it's snowing in the summer.  :)

That still sounds weird from an Australian perspective, as we don't have any areas with permanent snow. Giant moths live in our 'alps' during the summer.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

More like July or August if you ask me... ;)

The advantage of the snow as a model would be the ability to target and destroy it with a fireball. Wandering mages could offer a snow removal service (not recommended for thatched roofs). I suppose a collision box with the show cap VFX could also be targeted.

A few scaled-down icicle placeables around the eaves would complete the effect.

Paying wizards to clear snow cover seems like a pretty elaborate scenario for most modules. It's almost the sort of thing you'd add to a sandbox game. But perhaps it would be useful for a PW in a snow setting?

I know that Wizard's Apprentice 2 had some icicle placeables available, so those could be used. Possibly a rotatable visual effect of a row of clear icicles would be useful as well? *shrug*

The PW I work with could use this sort of thing, and having it be an effect so we don't have to jack with our Placeables.2da would indeed be an advantage.

We've wanted to have our city maps change with the seasons, and this would be GREAT for the purpose.  We would absolutely use it -- if you release as effect rather than going the placeables route, pls let me/us know!

Could an effect like this be used to create ground cover snowfall?

Icicle placeables are available from MotB.  I don't remember what they're called, but they're around the cave of the semi-friendly butter hag.

I wish I knew how to create an effect that hugs the ground contours. It'd be useful for placing random fallen leaf coverings, for example. I guess you could position a hexagonal array of snow hummock placeables. It might look a little odd though.

Ed.: I guess if you extracted the surface mesh from an area, you could conceivably convert it into an array of giant placeables, then plonk them down on top of the area as textured visual effect(s).

There is one area prefab that uses a modified surface mesh to portray deep snow. But not quite the same thing, obviously. :)

Unfortunately, the icicle placeables leave a lot to be desired.  They're really sub-optimal for general use.

They shouldn't look too bad scaled right down for the eaves. Some of them are made from crossed flat planes, but others appear to be three-dimensional models. They're no better or worse than the root placeables used in caves.

A ground-hugging snow VFX could be created using a projected texture - although for a white texture it would have to be additive, which means the snow would glow in the dark. And being white, it would REALLY glow.
