I didn't inherently dislike DA2 but I was rather disappointed by it. Aside from the combat changes (truly enjoyed my dw rogue in DA2) I felt as though everything else, including the UI, was streamlined into nothingness. Crafting? Gone - simply find the node and order whatever you want. Deck your companions in the bestest gear ever? Nope - their assigned upgrades are scattered around, just find them. Regurgitating Kirkwall and the Wounded Coast over and over again in itself was a bummer, and the world itself felt sparse; whereas each location in DAO was unique, the locations in DA2 were redundant and barren. There was little attention given to details that could have made the world feel more interesting. In the end I felt like DA2 was just riding on the success of DAO and Bioware just took a "meh, f**** it" approach.

That all being said, DA2 did introduce me to the glory that is Varric's chest hair and for that I'm grateful.  ^_^

DA2 was an overlong DLC... and at that it was a prequel DLC to inquisition, not Origins... the story was disjointed, the ending was too abrubt... it was like going about your buisnes for 10 years and then the game ended, 80% of quests were side qyests of little importance, Hawke although "the champion" was a total underachiever (mom dead, sibling dead, friend killed hundreds, could not stop Arishok from laying siege to the city) the passage of time was criminaly underused:

  • no changes in city layout,
  • people wear same clothes for 10 years straight,
  • people did not age,
  • one guy was waiting 6 years for a meeting with the vicount, as far as I know he still is there, while I go to close the Breach in Haven) NO I DID NOT TELL HIM THE VICOUNT WAS BEHEADED...
  • The same whores in the Rose for 10 years... <now this one is a joke>

Was the game fun why it lasted? YES
Is the DLC good? Actually better than the game itself.

Is it worth playing... at least once if you like Bioware and accept the fact that DA2 is more a Spinoff than a Sequel.

But in the end it was the ending that did not go well with me...

You are correct about the time skips but that wasn't the main issue with them. The real problem is that the skips were what we should have played. Remember, this was supposed to be a more personal story with the premise being Hawke's rise to power.

In year one, Hawke works for the mercs or smugglers. We could have played Hawke learning the city, rising in the ranks, and earning the reputation we are told he has in Act 1. This would also allow us to feel the pressure of protecting Bethany or, even more importantly, see Carver constantly in Hawke's shadow and disrespected, which would build sympathy for him and make him come off less like a whiner. Hawke could be putting his earnings aside and be in a position where funding the expedition sounded good.

The second time skip was a chance to see Hawke adjusting to life in Hightown, learning to rub elbows with the nobles and climbing the social ladder. We need to see what Hawke does that attracts the attention of the Viscount. Why does he trust Hawke to deal with the Arishok? I wouldn't change Act 2 too much since the Arishok and Hawke's dealings with him are great.

The last skip happens after we are named Champion, removing all importance of that title. We don't get to see the "honeymoon period" right after Hawke saves the city. It really leaves us saying "I'm the Champion... so what?"

Could not have said it better... the important stuff got cut... I mean it is evident, that the writers where inspired by A Song of Fire and Ice, but they failed at the verbal battles and character development, which is the the bread and water of G.R.R.M.'s book...

Bioware is still very afraid to challenge us in the dialogues... when I played the recent TellTale Game of Thrones... the conversations were intense... I know this stuff is scripted and only ever leeds to one result, but the dialogue was epic... I felt like a loser after every conversation... but that is how I should feel, when engaging in verbal battles against the Lanisters...

Epic, life-threatening dialogue, that is also what should be in Dragon Age...
There were conversation in The Witcher 2, which could lead to Geralts death... simply for saying the wrong thing...

Dragon Age goes out of its way to make sure there is no punishment for talking bad...

Oh, and I agree with this too. The DLCs were great.

I liked it. My only issue was the potion system aka make sure you get every material. Loved how you can have a set personality the first game had it,but it doesn't really worked, maybe the next game can do the same.

Now after playing DAI I suddenly find myself remembering DA2 with warmth, despite what I said about the game earlier. Didn´t think Bio could hit lower but there it is.

I didn't like that I couldn't play as an elf. I'll always play as an elf. Sure you can mod it, but the dialogue is still very much designed for a human hawke. Besides that I felt like my in-game decisions didn't really count for anything. The game has a set way of walking it's trail (I played all DA games several times) and no matter what you'll choose you get pretty much the same results.

I am also kind of 'meh' about "team mates choosing their own equipment".

I don't hate this game though, I don't think it's better than DA:O or anything like that. It has it's flaws, I still very much like playing it. The romance/rivalry system keeps it interesting to me.

I liked the game.

My biggest complaint is the reused environment

Pretty much this. The game itself is perfectly fine, but it loses points for the repeats.

I played Dragon age Origins and Dragon Age 2. I did not hate it, in fact I liked it a bit more than DA:O. I do not understand the hate this game gets. The story is good. There is tons to do. I STILL do not want to do the quest with the Necromancer when I play the game again because of what happens to Hawke's mom. I loved it. I thought it was fun from the first day. Maybe I am odd but I liked ME3 too. I think people are way too critical of this game. Just curious really.

If you played Origins and still can't figure out why people didn't like Dragon Age 2, I really don't know what to tell you.

I condescend as much as anyone else, but I can at least formulate a point when I do it and explain my case. I don't just say "well if you don't know by now, then I can't tell you" like it's some mystery to be solved.

You make yourself look like a ****** when that's all you say.

I've made a list of reasons for people like the OP before and you might as well not even bother. They've already made up their minds and only post threads like these to reinforce their own opinions. I'm sure the OP already knows why people don't like this game. I was actually being nice. I didn't want to call the OP an idiot for not being able to compare and contrast.

Honestly I didn't like Dragon Age 2 the first playthrough I did because of how repetitive it was. But after going back for my second playthrough I seem to enjoy it alot more... Weird.

Repeated zones aside, DA2 was a pretty decent game even if it had some flaws, and it's combat was streets ahead of DAIs.

DA:I - While I cannot speak for everyone else, I don't like the game mainly because of the "ported" feeling of the interface, (I play on a PC) and the controls feel really clunky in combat using a keyboard/mouse as opposed to using a controller. If you're playing any "ranged" class (archer or mage) then you'll really have little difficulty, but try playing with a keyboard and mouse dual wielding as a rogue, or even a sword n board tank and positioning correctly without using the Tac Cam interface.

Perhaps then you'll see what all the "fuss" is about.

Again MY opinion- and I'm just as "entitled" to one as any other paying customer here.

DA2's interface is MUCH better in comparison. The content is a little "linear" and hollow, IMO but other than that it was a good game. Not as good as DAO, mind you.

I played on PC and didn't feel like it was a port at all. Tac cam would have been nice, but overall I found the controls responsive and easy to use. I would take DA2's controls over DAIs any day.

Sorry was making comparison to DA:I's interface versus DA2. I like DA2's interface MUCH better. (should have made this clear in my post, kinda multitasking atm)

This was probably the best DA game in the series purely due to the size of Isabella's rack.

Isabella's rack > DAO tactical combat

Isabella's rack > DAI open world

The other things you're talking about though, 'loads to do', 'great story', I got no idea what you're talking about there dude.

I'll say again that I find it fascinating how Dragon Age: Inquisition makes (some) people appreciate Dragon Age II that much more.

Yes, Flemeth's rack was pretty decent, but not of the same magnitude of Isabellas.

Well.. we all have our indiscretions ;)

But in your defence I'm pretty sure they stole the idea from Matriarch Benezia from ME1... so she went from being an old hag with no teeth and bad breath to sexy older woman in DA:2...
