So I'm curious because I can't seem to get this to work.

I read in a bunch of different places that when she puts her spell on Hawke, a warrior Hawke with Templar specialization can break it just like a mage Hawke can. But in my playthrough I never got the option. It didn't matter whether I had a mage in my party or not, there was nothing my Hawke could do themselves except the standard two options that lead to killing her.

So now I'm confused. Did I miss something else that I need to do before I can do that? Is my game bugged? Has anyone ever done this?

I think it's a bug. I know when I had the Templar spec, I couldn't do anything special either. Mage Hawke can break it in a special way, but Templar Hawke just gets the standard options. Kind of a bummer.

Its the way it should be. Not like you have litany nearby when she casts blood magic on you. A Templar does not get any special treatment in that quest, only the mage class.

I know if you have Bethany with you, Hawke will call to her, if the option is chosen, who then breaks the spell

I usually play mages but it sucks that a Templar specced Hawke gets nothing to break her spell. It would make more sense for that Hawke to get the option to nullify her magic the moment s/he walks into the room. This game makes Hawke too stupid to live sometimes.

Thing is templars can't break blood magic since its not using mana or lyrium that's why some apostates learn the school to survive when templars come hunting for them. Duncan even has a story he saw one blood mage being chased and the mage forced another templar to cut off his comrades head. Then he was killed.

So it makes no sense for templar Hawke to break it hence why templars hunt mages in groups.

I've also had the option for Merrill or Anders to break the spell. I don't know what the requirements to get that option are though. I've only been able to get it to appear once and it never happened again. I got Anders as a mage, and Merrill as a rogue.

As to the warrior/templar question. Honestly, I have no idea. I have never played a melee character (I can't melee to save my life  )

No, apparently Asunder proves that Templars can dispel blood magic too. It's just harder. (There's some who argue that templars can only dispel blood magic if it's used to empower spells that could be done without blood magic, and that spells that can only be cast using blood are immune to templars, but I don't know how that's supposed to work or if those who argue this can cite evidence.)

I was under the impression that any Hawke could break the compulsion (um, otherwise they'd die....) but there were companion benefits to going different routes to get there.  For myself, mage Hawke breaks the compulsion alone and non-mage asks Anders for help (for +5 approval, I'm easy that way) and no worries.  I really do prefer rogues, though, so I have minimal experience getting that far in with a templar Hawke.  If you're going solo and want to strut your stuff, why not?

Lore wise, there's quite a bit of debate on how effective templar talents are at combating blood magic.  Theoretically, a templar would have no more power to resist the compulsion than anyone else, since it has been quoted in-game that templar talents aren't effective on blood magic.  Let us know how it works out.

Yeah any Hawke can break it I'm guessing though if you barely break it Hawke straight up stabs her so there's not a chance of it happening again.

  • Mage-Hawkes can break it themselves.
  • Non-mage Hawkes can call on mage companions to break it.
  • Non-mage Hawkes with no mage companions can break it, but then they have no option to leave Idunna alive.

On of my warrior file, tried the templar thing didn't work...ended up stabbing her in a fit of anger...I felt bad,yet I can't trust her. Let here lived in another file, but not sure if she truly changes...ended up doing the same to the serial killer's student. Being good sucks(as in some things are going to bite you in the rear).

I think it is better to imagine that Hawke specializations are only gameplay wise, so hawke is not really a templar or reaver no matter if you chose that spec. Story wise the only specialization that Hawke could have is "Champion", and that was not a spec in DA2.

Yeah, that's what I normally assume too, but this was mentioned in the walkthrough on the wiki and when it didn't work I began to wonder. I noticed it has since been removed. I wonder where it came from.

I play on Casual, that tends to help. XD As for the mages' help, it depends on which ones you have in the party (natch), but when you have multiple some take precedence over others. I don't know the order. Or did you have mages and none of them could help?

The order of "seniority" when it comes to the mages' help with the apostitute is Bethany first, Anders second, and Merrill third. :)
