Hey all!

I'm a builder and host for Arenthyor, a NWN1 persistent world.

I wanted to drop you guys a note to let you know that  The Neverwinter Nights subforum on Reddit.com has come under new management and the team has lots of ideas to help reinforce and build the community for the game.  Reddit, as a site, reaches a significantly larger number of gamers and players than the Bioware boards could ever hope to do, so it's a great way to help continue to expose new people to the game, get old players to get back in, and help strengthen the community.

This sub will be open to any and all content about NWN: 1, 2, and NWO.

So, your task is to visit, subscribe to the sub if you aren't already, and then contribute.

We're not looking to siphon all the discussion from here over to there.  These boards do what they are intended to do fairly well and the organization of topics here lends itself to more detailed discussion.

However, on Reddit we can tap into a larger pool of potential players, have a bit of fun, and share knowledge (and nwn-related memes!).

Hope to see you there!  Also, if you're interested in helping out, we'd love to have you.

BtB

(also Lord Flaoshebel, one of the new moderators on Reddit's Neverwinter Nights sub)

Cool. It looks like you guys have some sorta name changey thing set up, what do I have to do to get me nwn2 community name there instead of my reddit account?

The name change is for moderators AFAIK and even in those cases, the names are specifically given as one of the Lords of Neverwinter - we didn't get to choose.  I was given Flaoshebel, as that was next on the list :D.

It would be really cool to port your community name to maintain some continuity between here and there, but that's not part of the functionality, unfortunately.

The Neverwinter Subreddit seems sparsely used. Even if the community moved over it would hardly register in the overall reddit community, so while it has the potential to reach more users, in practice that seems unlikely. I don't think we need another forum at this point in time TBH, there's just not enough activity on the game to justify it.

A couple of points here:

1)  Don't let the lack of current activity on that particular subreddit fool you.  Yes, NWN (1 or 2) is sparsely discussed over there in the grand scheme of all games discussed.  And, that particular subreddit about NWN hasn't had a lot of activity.  However, the lead moderator chose that particular subreddit at the one for us to rally around (there are a few sub-forums about NWN) because he felt it was the best one that represented the entire franchise.  It is intended for others to be closed and redirected to this one.  So, please don't let the existing scarcity of discussions on that one particular board suggest that it is like that across Reddit or that it even reflects the current level of discussions about NWN.  Small as it is, there are still people talking about it.

2)  I'm certainly not advocating moving *any* discussion from here to there.  I even said as much in my post.  The point is that Reddit represents a leading destination that people likely to be interested in playing NWN are already engaged.  We need to be there as a community if we want to reach and attract new players, entice old players back to the game, or help support the wider NWN audience.  Those conversations are happening whether we're there or not.

3)  There are millions of gamers actively participating and engaging about their games on Reddit.  Of those millions of gamers, there are likely hundreds of thousands of gamers who like RPGs.  Of those who like RPGs, many of them will have either:

A)  Currently own NWN1 and/or NWN2 and have it installed

B )  Own the disks, but don't have it installed anymore

C)  Be willing to try it if they don't because there's people talking about it.

How many of A/B/C have accounts or are active on these boards?  Not many at all.  Those who are here are probably the most interested, the most passionate.  But the masses probably don't even know these boards exist.  There are probably more casual NWN gamers on the GoG.com forum than there are here.

Having an active subreddit about the NWN franchise is part of maintaining a healthy community.  Who's going to help ensure the longevity of this game?  We are.  To that end, ever heard of the adage, 'fish where the fish are'?  The fish are on Reddit (among other places of course, but Reddit has a huuuuge visitor base).  We can't expect them to come here.  We have to go there.

4)  Reddit is *not* a social networking site.  It's more like a bulletin or discussion board.  Somebody asks a question or makes a comment and other people respond.  In fact, these Bioware boards are more about social networking than Reddit is.

Hope that helps.

Would it be a decent place to post notices about new modules, module patches, and modding content?

Absolutely!

Advertise your modules.

Advertise your PW.

Advertise your custom content.

Post about upcoming events you are having.

Look for people to play with.

Encourage people to use custom content to re-experience the game

Help people with technical problems

Help people with questions about NWN or the campaigns

Create your own personal list of favorite modules.

Post NWN-related memes or lighthearted material.

Ask questions of other community members.

Some of the stuff we have planned:

  1. A 'calendar' allowing you to post events
  2. Looking for group - a way to solicit people to play with
  3. Module Book Club - a module is slected for people to play individually and then come together to discuss.  Could be expanded to persistent worlds.
  4. Community updates - what's new on the Vault

That's just some thought starters.  I'm sure we can think of tons more.
