James Vega and Kaidan Alenko

Sorry folks, but I'm a huge fan of both.
So far, I've equipped them with the Typhoon. Now, I'm trying to figure out if the grenades on James is worth maxing out. If so, which other power do I short? And, on Rank 6, which evolution do I take?
Kaidan......So far, I've been avoiding putting points in Barrier altogether. That cooldown is something else. Even with the 25% power cooldown armor. Usually, I've been shorting, CryoBlast.
For as long as I've been playing the game, I still can't come up with a build that works on both.
Does James work better with weapon damage or absorbing it? The same with Kaidan. I guess I'm trying to find something that works for both. Oh, on James, I spec his ammo power to squad.
Thank you for your time and help!

Typhoon with Incendiary ammo on both? Do you even manage to shoot some mooks yourself? ![]()
I like putting points in durability for squadmate class powers, James's rank 6 allows for more shields for both yourself and Kaidan. Kaidan's rank 6 allows for smaller shield recharge delay for both you and James
I prefer to give Kaidan both Reave and Overload so he can deal with both armor and shields.barriers (though he seems to use them randomly if left on his own). Reave also gives him bonus damage reduction so it's a nice power for him to have.
For James, I'd max his class power, Frag Grenade and Incendiary Ammo. Carnage takes forever to recharge and his ammo power will already prime targets for fire explosions. Fortification can be a nice addition with this setup, since you don't have to worry about his power cooldown period. If you can't max 4 powers (don't remember how it works in imported game) consider this: offense - max Frag Grenade, Arms Master and Incendiary Ammo, defense - max Fortification, Arms Master and Incendiary Ammo.

I like your idea on James. Then, the question becomes, how do I merge the two. Leaving out Carnage never entered my mind. But, you are right about the cooldown.
As for, Kaidan, I guess I could always give him his Barrier back and not bother putting any points in, CryoBlast. Or, just use the leftover points.

Do I get to shoot mooks? Yes I do. :-)

Barrier is more a hindrance than help IMO. Give him Reave instead
It gives a temporary protection layer when hits enemies and makes him tougher to kill.
As for James, I'd go for defense. Grenades are damaging on their own and he already has the Typhoon

Then, with, Kaidan, I'll still leave him without Barrier.
And, I have to remember to make sure I take the shield evolutions on both of them.

OK.....James then will have, Grenades, Fortification, Ammo and Arms Master. Now, with his grenades, Rank 6, which evolution do I take?

Go with Armor damage. You can take out shields with Kaidan's Overload, or you can set up a tech burst and detonate it with a Frag Grenade. It will take out shields even without shield damage evolution.

Squadmates deal only 30% weapon damage. Any bonuses to James is based off of (0.3 * weapon_damage) so the extra weapon damage is not really worth it in my opinion.
I should note that I play on Xbox, so I can only map one power per squadmate. If I want to play without pausing (or with minimal pausing), that means I can only really use one power per squadmate, so that changes how I spec my squadmates usually.
James:
For James, I usually ignore Carnage since the cooldown is oppressive and I do not really use him a whole lot anyway. I usually spec James for survivability, grenades, and Incendiary Ammo:
Fortification: Durability - Shield Recharge - Durability
Incendiary Ammo: Squad Bonus - Headshots - Explosive Burst
Carnage: -
Frag Grenades: Damage - Grenade Count - Shield Damage
Passive: Health and shields - Shield Recharge - Fortification
Notes:
- Incendiary Ammo, I go Squad unless I have my own Incendiary Ammo (Soldier or Vanguard), in which case I give him the damage bonus. If I am using Squad Cryo Ammo or Squad Disruptor, then I ignore his Incendiary Ammo
- If you want more damage out of his ammo, then go power damage at rank 5 of Fortification and passive.
Kaiden:
How I spec him depends on whether I am a biotic or a tech/combat class:
Biotic Kaidan:
Reave: Radius - Recharge Speed - Armor and Barrier damage
Cryo Blast: -
Overload: -
Barrier: -
Passive: Power Damage - Biotic damage - Squad bonus (I think)
Tech Kaidan:
Overload: Damage - Recharge Speed/Neural Shock - Shield Damage
Cryo Blast: Radius - Cryo Explosion - Recharge Speed
Reave: -
Barrier: -
Passive: Power Damage - Tech Damage - Squad bonus (I think)
Notes:
- I cannot remember offhand the other rank 6 evolution in his passive. I think it is health and shields?
- For Overload, you can go chain Overload at rank 1 if you want to hit two enemies; There are few shielded enemies in single player so I usually keep it single target. You can always tech-burst with it to damage enemy shields in a radius.
- For Overload, I tend to waver between Recharge Speed and Neural Shock at rank 5. Neural Shock is good for Phantom and Banshee barriers

For Kaidan, if you are a Sentinel or Adept I would recommend not speccing into either Barrier (cool down issues) or Overload. His Reave will prime shielded targets which you can detonate with Throw or Warp. It has a wide impact radius (3 meters) and a somewhat decent cool down with recharge armor and no Barrier. Use Cryo Blast with an area evolution on unprotected enemies since that has an even faster cool down than Reave (6.5 seconds in recharge armor and no Barrier). Then detonate a cryo explosion with Throw. I do not use the Typhoon anymore because it is just too powerful. Instead, I have been leaning towards the Suppressor with a power amplifier and heavy barrel for Liara, Kaidan, and Javik. As a Sentinel, I do not go with the durability evolutions for squad mates because the Sentinel can increase squad mate durability by 30% in his/her fitness tree, evolution 5A. Even without that I don't really have much of an issue with my squad mates going down very often because I am fairly conscientious about managing their positions. I have them hang back under cover while Shepard moves to take point. This encourages the enemy to focus on Shepard rather than the squad. Here is Kaidan on Gellix (insanity). Overall, I find Kaidan to be a powerful team mate for a biotic Shepard. (Kaidan and Javik, both with Typhoons, are a force of nature.)

Even more ideas. Thank you!
Oddly, I never once thought of what kind of class I play when I spec, Kaidan. Maybe that was my problem. I just dumped the points in.
Basically, my game is, James, Garrus, and, when I get him, Kaidan. The only time I worry about class is, when I play an Adept or Vanguard. Shields.
And, the only time I make them move to cover or whatever is, London. Other thanthat, I leave them do their own thing.
Weapon damage isn't a good idea then. I was always putting points in there. So, I'll change that to the other option. I do agree the Typhoon is way over powered. What is the next best AR? Mattock?

I would say the Revenant is still quite good with squad mates without being ridiculous.

Javik was quite effective with Particle Rifle in my game. And I didn't even upgrade the weapon

I liked the video, cap and gown. Thank you.
I'm on a PS3 myself, and mapping powers on a Sentinel is perplexing. I'm guessing, Overload, warp and throw. The bonus power is the hard part. I always borrow ammo powers.
On my Kaidan import, everybody but Legion lives. Ashley import, Mordin dies, Zaeed
dies. Did his loyalty mission way too late. And, Legion dies.
I've been changing my game playing. I leave Allers behind. Quit hitting those Medi-Gel things for points. Now, I just click if I need a refill.
I've got another question. The Citadel DLC. I was looking at the "Easter Egg" thing. For the life of me, I cannot find any of those "boxes." I've got a general idea of where they are. But still can't find them. Are those only found if you have, Wrex? If so, I don't have, Wrex alive in either of my imports.

Well, with my import, I could use the Harrier (sp?) until I get the Mattock then switch to the Revenant. Come to think of it, the Particle Rifle could be useful.

I like the Sentinel because my 3 main powers are all mapped to hotkeys: Warp, Throw, and Overload. I rely so heavily on hotkeys for Shepard that I often forget I also have grenades. This is also why I prefer to have an ammo power since I don't have to go to the power wheel for it. I can pretty much accomplish every thing I want with just the 3 powers.
The "present" and the "fireworks" are hidden behind some crates. They are a little hard to see because of the way the camera is restricted on consoles. You have to work at it a bit to peek behind the crates. For the "ark of the Covenant" you have to be across the room from it. You can't see it up close.

I'll look harder behind the crates for those boxes.
Oh, I'm not a fan of that Suppressor pistol. It's usually the Paladin or Talon. SMG, the Blood Pack one.

Right now, my Sentinel is stuck on, Omega. I'm trying to get past the part where the bombs went live. You have to deactivate four of them. What surprised me about the ME3 Sentinel was, the armor didn't explode lke it did in ME2. That I miss.

You are free to explode the armor any time you want, and the cool down on resetting it is only 1.5 seconds. ![]()
Yes, the bomb section can be difficult. My last time through I made it without dying. Didn't die the entire DLC, in fact, until the last part where I died once.

I have overload mapped to class power. Warp to LB. Throw to RB.

On my PS3, I have to pause the game to do that. That's why I miss the ME2 version.

Well, I originally liked Sentinel in ME2 when playing on Veteran difficulty, but came to dislike it greatly when playing on insanity. The only power I ever got to cast on insanity was tech armor. I might as well not have had any other power since the armor was continuously exploding. I suppose that's fine if you want lots of close quarters combat, but not if you want to play a caster.

Let me add that the introduction of combat rolls/dodge moves got rid of one of the main reasons you would want your armor to explode. Now it is much easier to just dodge out of a dangerous situation without the need for staggering the enemy.

The squad evolution of all character passives affects the character it's on as well as the rest of the squad. So if you go with James and Kaiden's squad passives, both of them get both benefits.

Right now, just started, Citadel DLC. Did the fight in the sushi place and that walkway. One of the hardest things for me to remember was, rolling/dodging. I did a ton of that. Had to keep getting out of the way of those grenades. But, I do see what you mean.
When I get the chance, I'll re-spec their passives for health and shields.

For Kaidan, I think his Health and Shield bonuses are opposite his Power Damage bonuses. I would never switch his Power Damage for Health and Shields. His Power Damage is more useful than Health and Shields, particularly with Overload.
James is better with more Health and Shields. I would not bother taking James' squad bonus to Health and Shields. The benefit for Shepard and squad is too low to be useful/noticeable.

With James, his passive, Arms Master, the last evolution puts his halth and shieldsvto over, 1000. 1100 is the final number I think.
With Kaidan, on his passive, I was always taking the tech power upgrade. He has more tech than biotic powers. That's how I always looked at it. Overload and CryoBlast. But, with the other suggestions on Kaidan hopefully I can get him working right.

It depends on what powers you use. Give him Overload and Cryo Blast with tech damage or Reave with biotic power damage. I went for biotic damage myself, his Overload still fully destroyed Marauder and Centurion shields which was pretty much all I needed. Here is Kaidan with Javik on Priority: Earth - Link

I'm on a tablet with a crappy signal. If I could find a way to download the videos, I would.
I did notice he had the Mattock.
Thanks, vazgen!
