George Carlin is overrated.
Also some people take freedom of speech to mean "I can get away with saying anything!" well suck it chaotic do-gooders but I'm neutral good and I also believe in the hate speech law which makes half of your ideas about "free speech" punishable offences. You're free to joke about a person's race, religion, nationality etc but so long as you don't mind sharing a cell later with that creep outside of Subway. Some jokes are okay unless they're made to inspire hatred/discrimination.
You wan't be to a "comedian" like George Carlin and present your serious political rant as a joke? Good luck explaining that to the police when you say something along the lines about coloured ethnicities being less superior to yours. I find any "joke" that is hateful and discriminatory in nature not to be a joke but a serious hate speech attack disguised as a joke (which they often are so the speaker can try and shrug it off later). Recently this has happened a lot on social media with race "jokes" but the police don't buy it, at least not here in the UK.
What kind of jokes are not acceptable?

Emergency room personnel and cops generally tell awful black jokes for just that reason.

I take it, you wouldn't be able to enjoy Frankie Boyle with that mindset.
Or Onision. He tells some shocking jokes... ![]()

A while back, Comedian Jim Norton and Jezebel writers Lindy West had a pretty interesting debate about this, for anyone who's interested.
Regarding the subject itself, I'd just say two quick things:
1. We should distinguish telling jokes that are about touchy things (i.e. Louis CK's rape joke) from telling jokes that are at the expense of people who've suffered as a result of those sensitive things (i.e. Daniel Tosh's rape joke fiasco from a couple years ago). It's the latter that generally come in for the most criticism.
2. While I think every subject is fair game for humor, I also think that there's truth to the idea that comedy is for the underdog. It's no accident that relatively few comedians are supermodel or athlete-looking types constantly making jokes about how much nerds suck. When we make jokes at the expense of victims of racism, sexism, etc., we're decidedly not crafting our humor for the underdog; consequently, this sort of humor comes across as a sort of bullying, and thus, not very funny.

Anything can be joked about. Everybody should come to terms with that.
Especially people who take themselves WAY WAY too seriously.

That being said I really enjoy jokes about special snow flakes and evil people. One of the funnier things I've read recently is a whine in the New Republic by a child of privilege complaining that mean people gave her autobiography bad reviews on Amazon. But the funny is from her total unself awareness and narcissism. Self inflicted humour can be very very cruel and very funny.

My favorite jokes involve hypocritical behavior.
Its how I'm a strong social liberal but can still chuckle at some jokes spoken about us.

There are a lot of jokes that for me are uncomfortable, but I wouldn't label them as unacceptable.
If you want examples of jokes that I personally find unacceptable then here are a few examples.
- A group of bullies repeatedly hit a younger kid while laughing then post it on Youtube.
- A group of bullies lock a kid in a teachers cupboard. The kid is in there for an hour before being discovered.
- A kid who is a bit nerdy looking get's laughed at for being different.
- Some kid is not very intelligent and get picked on every time he makes a stupid remark.
Is it comedy? Well I'd argue that it's the worst kind of comedy! Sarcasm is not the lowest form of humour.
Malicious comedy is the lowest form of humour. This is outright mean spirited!
This type of comedy isn't so much about laughing at ones misfortune. It is actively creating ones misfortune then laughing at it.
Another word for malicious comedy is bullying! It is flat out wrong!
Should comedy have restrictions? I hope we can agree that at the very least, that actively bullying someone is off limits.

I don't think rape victims necessarily have a high opinion of themselves. That isn't why they'd be sensitive.

I think you can have comedy about a serious issue.
Particularly if that comedy is more about laughing at society and the attitudes of the perpetrators of crime.
