If it's on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, it's not acceptable.

I've actually done stand-up comedy (no claims to be financially successful in that arena, though I was well-received by audiences... mostly.)

Is bullying an acceptable form of comedy?

I think the more germane question is whether bullying qualifies as comedy. To people for whom it doesn't, the question is moot. Many comedians are accused of being bullies, and most of the time, I don't agree with the people making the accusation. It is usually used as a way to attack comedy that someone finds offensive, and is only rarely a valid criticism.

Are minstrel shows acceptable?

It's debatable as to whether minstrel shows qualified as comedy. They were generally categorized under "variety," which is presumed to often include (or, at least not to exclude) comedy. Several comedians and filmmakers have tried to tackle the subject for both comedic and educational purposes, and I know of a couple of examples where they were unfairly villainized for trying make a point that was grossly misunderstood. See above re: people accusing comedians of bullying simply because they were offended by the subject matter.

Should all forms of comedy be allowed to be performed in any place at all situations?

I would say no. Which is different from something being unacceptable.

Is laughing at someone being attacked as the attack is happening acceptable?

I don't really see how this relates to comedy. Are you referring to some kind of performance art?

If these comedians say answer no to any of these questions, then they too are of the opinion that comedy should have limits.

Most of us would say no to all 4 including the risqué comedians such as Frankie Boyle and George Carlin.

I think it is a worrying thing to say that there should be no limitations on comedy.

I answered no to one of those questions, but I'm not comfortable equating that with a belief that comedians need to be limited, since that's not what I believe.

I don't know that I think all 4 questions were actually questions about comedy, as I mentioned above.

I'm sorry if it worries you, but I don't believe there should be inherent rules or limits on comedy. That doesn't mean that a comedian is incapable of doing something that I would find distasteful, offensive, or even hateful. It's just that I'm not prepared to make rules governing what other comedians are or aren't allowed to do on the basis of what upsets me, or that I don't like.

There's two ways to respond to a joke.  Either laugh, or don't.

I prefer the canadian way: punch the offending comedian out cold.

the only jokes that are not acceptable are the ones that get no laughs... just know your audience

IMO, no kind of joke is "unacceptable", as long as it's just words. To declare any subject or social group "off-limits to jokes", or whatever you want to call it, is absurd and would most likely backfire, like a comedy equivalent of the Streisand Effect. The more you draw a line, the more you encourage people to cross it.

8 pages and no one has mentioned puns.

Puns are like a really spicy food, the more it hurts, the better it usually is.

Guys, check this out.

Does it offend you? If so, then simply walk away.

But seriously, this is pretty funny, I must say.
Oh, don't read the name of the link, it's a bit rude.

People say you can make a joke about something that is taboo and people will laugh.

No. You still need comic timing to pull of the joke.

I'm surprised this newcomer did so well...

If you bound comedy by limitations, It will eventually crumple.

Interesting you say that.

There was a prankster called Sam Pepper who went around physically harassing and borderline (possibly crossing the boarder depending on your viewpoint) assault.

His one particular prank involved pinching womens butts with a fake hand.

To make a point he had a woman do the same thing to men, which seems (at least from my point of view) just as morally wrong.

His brand of comedy included:

  • Public Disturbance
  • Sexual harassment
  • (You might disagree here) Assault

The following video contains distressing content.

You have been warned.

Spoiler

When I argue that comedy should have limits, I'm not arguing that jokes about certain topics should be banned.

Sexual harassment should not be part of comedy. Sam Pepper's pranks are precisely the kind of actions what I'm talking about.

I'm cool with George Carlin and Frankie Boyle. They can continue their risque comedy.

As for Sam Pepper: he has crossed a huge line. I don't personally believe that I'm crumbling comedy. Heck most of the people on this thread probably won't even view these pranks as comedy.

Well, Believe it or not, I completely agree with you. I despise feminism, But Misogyny repulses me x10 more. This is not Comedy though, This is a misuse of Comedy to promote misogyny.

Well, Let me just put that clear since you guys are failing to understand that about me, I believe that when you force someone to do something, When you gather your friends and rape a girl, That's weakness, Not Strength. You're so insecure, So hopeless to have sex, That you can't even do it without help. I don't like bullies, they're the weakest type of humans I've ever seen in my life. Just disgusting, You have No confidence, You have no character, You just think you're the king of the world for abusing people that are weaker than you. Pathetic.

P.S: I used to be somekind of a freedom fighter when i was young, Helped a lot of people, But they just don't change, There was no point in doing so. Now, I believe in something, If you earn my respect, I'll help you, If you don't, I won't. I'd almost go to any extend to protect someone who i fully respect. I'm not an idealistic nor am i evil, I'm just neutral.
