I was hoping we might discuss Ostwick, as it will be the home city of human Inquisitors. Not much is known of the city, so perhaps we might pool our knowledge.

Ostwick is a city-state in the Free Marches, situated on the coast of the Waking Sea.

In the chapter covering the Free Marches in the World of Thedas Volume 1,  Ostwick is listed among the Major City-States along with Kirkwall and Starkhaven. Likely making it larger and more influential compared to the likes of Markham or Ansburg.

The World of Thedas also provides this short description of Ostwick under "Other Marcher Cities":

Ostwick: When the Qunari first landed in the Free Marches, it was at the city-state Ostwick near the mouth of the Waking Sea. The city-state's famous double walls show the effect this had on its people's nerves.

Additionally, in his letter to Empress Celene titled "Marcher Misconceptions" Lord Chancellor Joffrey Orrick of Tantervale writes:

... A lovely saying I heard once: "We have a prince in Starkhaven, a margrave in Ansburg, a teyrn in Ostwick, and a viscount in Kirkwall... yet we accept no king in the Free Marches."

This is where the facts end and the speculation begins. The use of the title "teyrn" in the city in addition to the geographical proximity leads me to believe there may be considerable Fereldan influence in Ostwick. It may even be a city founded by the remnants of Andraste's armies after their Exalted Marches.

We do not know whether Ostwick is an old Tevinter Imperium city like Kirkwall, or if it is of more recent construction. The passage concerning the Qunari threat seems to imply that the double walls at least are recent additions.

Please, if you have any further information, questions or ideas about Ostwick, feel free to share them.

The only reference I remember of Ostwick in DA2 is in the Enigma of Kirkwall codex entry. It doesn't say anything about Ostwick, only that there is a Circle of Magi there.

I hadn't realised that. Basing my Trevelyan on Cersei Lannister seems less random now!

You posted the little that is known about Ostwick. But you have to respect a city that had the invading Qunari army land next to them and still managed to resist (WoT, page 118: "The Qunari hit the Free Marches hard. Starkhaven and Ostwick are able to hold them back, but Kirkwall is invaded").

Good question. I don't know how long mabari have been bred. I think Mabari were originally Tevinter based though. Maybe they're everywhere.

I also figured if they have Ferelden traits, then they could be some of the leftover tribes from Maferath/Andraste's exalted march. Lots of babarians moving their armies in these areas back then.

Lol! Too true, too true. I love Cersei to bits, but...yeah. It is TV's Cersei I'm basing her on, which from what I hear is better than book Cersei, but still.

I'm very curious about the Circle of Ostwick and the Trevelyan backstory... It would be cool to know if Trevelyan mage gets special treatment because their family has strong ties with the Chantry.

Considering that they have their own Circle of Magi, they must either have a large Templar or Mage population akin to Kirkwall.
The Trevelyan family, our family, is described as prominent and having strong connections with the Chantry and Templars. They are a pious lot, our own Inquisitor made to serve willingly or otherwise. They might be the ruling house or simply a powerful one.
The use of Teryn for the city's ruler implies at some history with Ferelden. After Andraste's Exalted March, southern Thedas was divided amongst Andraste and Maferath sons. Perhaps one of them founded the city and became it's Teryn. Ferelden doesn't have a history as an invader so this seems more plausible.
That's all I know.

Probably not enough to care, since the description says the Templars tried to execute them during the uprising.

Imagining your avatar shouting this makes me lol... xD

But yeah... Ostwick... sounds like an interesting place, although I could do without the Fereldan influences.  It would be cool to see the place in-game, but that seems unlikely...
