A similar post may already be up, (this is my first official post on Bioware forums). Apologies in advance if I've made any rookie mistakes.

'These rare mages received special dispensation from the Chantry to serve in battle. They summon blades from the Fade and are experts in protection and defence.' - Dragon Age Wiki

Just interested to know what people think of the Chantry actually having their own

mages to conduct tasks in their interest. While it's not a massive surprise by any means

as the Chantry has already noted that 'magic exists to serve man'. I'm curious for a number of

reasons:

 - The recruitment process - Given that all mages are perpetually prone to becoming abominations or becoming apostates. I'd presume appointment could potentially take decades for one to clearly demonstrate their loyalty to the Chantry.

- What kind of missions or tasks would they have to attend to?

- Knight Enchanters authorities and responsibilities? Are they similar to Mass Effect's Spectres or James Bond 00s where agents may bend the law if the ends justify the means?  Or just similar to Templars or Seekers of Truth?

- Controversial? I highly doubt the appointment of Knight Enchanters across Thedas would be a concept categorically supported by members of the Chantry. For instance, Templars or Seekers of Truth seem likely candidates to oppose the notion.

These may be negligible questions in the grand scheme of things but I'm excited (as many are) for Dragon Age: Inquisition :D

They sound like Mage templars, so maybe they are just mage's who proven themself and take the templar oath.

You see this in any occupation, the invading force sets up a police or task group which is filled by native population but reports directly to occupying government,

So its probably just that, If i'm right i would suspect the Knight Enchanters are made up of Loyalist since that fraternity thinks what the Chantry is doing is the right thing.

I'd expect them to just be "battle mages"; Leashed mages that the Chantry unleashes when it goes to war.

Eh i doubt they're "leashed", having "Knight" in their name implies a bit more respect than saarebas treatment

It was a term of phrase.

Leashed in so far as them being a military unit under the command of an entity outside of themselves.

Like any army.

Because i strongly doubt they have much say in where they go, what they do, who they fight or what their rules of engagement are.

Thats what i mean, i think the title of Knight implies a bit more respect and respect, allowing more choice in what they do in comparison to the average mage while of course still keeping them restricted

From their name and description I imagine they are like honorary Templars who are given permission to go out and assist Templars in their duties or support local soldiers in crisis like Blights or Qunari Invasions.

I doubt it.

Because Mages are forbidden to have noble power, to hold outside station.

The Chantry allowing such would be turning its back on its own rules on the subject; something i find fairly improbable.

Not to mention; There is nothing to indicate these individuals aren't treated the same as any mage.

They just have a semi useful skill set that sets them apart during times of conflict.

I never said anything about noble power. Im simply saying i think the title of "Knight" implies some power within the Chantry, same way being First Enchanter grants some freedom.

The fact that they have "Enchanter" in their name is an indication that they may hold some power in the Chantry, its speculation at this point of course but i dont see it as far fetched at all

They're called "Knights" because they are a part of the Chantry's army. There as Templar as a mage can get, and serving the Chantry has always had it's perks, regardless of being mage-born.

Possible, i'm not dismissing possible influence.

I'm pointing out their Order is one of a tool.

No different from any soldier in so far as function.

They serve, they do not dictate, they fight not because of their own agenda or politics, but because they were ordered to do so.

They wouldn't be made KEs in the first place. Most mages serve themselves, they serve the Chantry. They're vastly different.

Quite possibly.

But i was merely expressing my belief this is an organization no different from say...an military unit because in my opinion that's the most likely usage of them.

Magical warriors employed by the Chantry during war time.

Military units have ranks, thats my point, i think the Knight Enchanter is another rank as well as a class of fighter. Achieving this status will come with slight freedoms just like the other ranks in the Circle
