Dynasty Warriors is fine. I'm not a huge fan of the series, but I don't hate it. Combat is far from the most important thing to me when playing an RPG though. I seriously miss the days of turn based, FF1-esq combat.
Just give us auto attack and not button attack.

I think you would like Dynasty Warriors more than any Bioware game, dude.
Ya this is not an action game, The combat is not supposed to feel like every hit matters.

I'm going to reserve judgement on this one to be honest. From my understanding auto-attack works just fine in the tac-cam view on the PC. It is disappointing that I won't be able to toggle back and for the between the different camera modes and preserve the same control scheme between them. Once I knew that the tac-camera can be set to any angle and zoom and pause and unpause works fine within it, I knew I would be spending 100% of combat in that mode anyway.
I just wonder at why they weren't a bit more forthcoming on this massive change in controls. I actually feel kind of sorry for consolers this time, they won't have that option.
I think it was a poor decision and just like DA2, they will probably have to patch it back in ASAP after release to quell the discontent.

I think they are action games at this point. They've been changing their combat to that direction since JE and ME. DA2 was just another step there.
Saying it isn't so is denying reality. Things get more action based, instead of reiterating NWN or Kotor or what have you.
I like both systems btw. I'm just saying. It is what it is.
Funnily, Bioware even calls it Action Adventure on their site. First time I've seen them label a game that way. "BioWare's latest action-adventure delivers an unparalleled story set in a vast, ..."

Well from what I have seen from the combat they do not have enough of a good combat system to be a good action rpg. They failed if they were going for that. You can't have an in between and both aspects be good.
Thats the problem with bioware, they try to do too many things at once.

What do you define as an "action game"? Diablo? Mass Effect? Dragon Age 2? And if DA2 is but DAO isn't, then where's the line, exactly?
To me, an action RPG is any one that doesn't have turn based combat. If I'm moving my PC around and doing things with him in real time, it's an action game.

Has there been any word on controller support for PC?
There was mention of being able to use an Xbox controller on PC.

Some clarifications hopefully to the rescue!
When directly controlling a character (ie not in tactical cam mode):
-Hold controller trigger to continuously "auto"-attack, tap to do a single attack (or repeatedly tap, which does the same thing as hold)
-Hold 'R' (rebindable) or hold left click to continuously "auto"-attack, tap to do a single attack (or repeatedly tap, which does the same thing as hold)
Not pressing/holding attack button/key when directly controlling a character will cause them not to attack.
In tactical cam mode you're basically assigning orders, so all party members will autoattack while in tac-cam. The camera can be panned and tilted all around in tac-cam mode, it's not iso/top-down locked.

Just want to point out mass effect didn't have auto attack, you still had to click for every attack. AND it had a hotbar for abilities...
This is nowhere close to a valid comparison...
me3 you can't directly control party members, and it is not a tactical rpg. It is a third person shooter with abilities. Also aiming a gun and shooting is not the same as going in front of an enemy and holding the attack button.

The game is about to ship. This isn't changing, without a pretty significant revamp.
DA2 had the same problem. People complained and auto-attack toggle was a week one patch for the PC and one month after launch patch for the consoles because of patch approval time. Far from a big revamp, unless this time it's linked to a bigger part of the game mechanic.

Wasn't that a bug though? As I understand it was supposed to have auto attack but something went wrong and they ended up shipping a version without it, so they had to roll out these patches to re-add it to the game.

I honestly do not remember. I do remember waiting for the patch to play as I like to disconnect from my character to gaze on the battlefield and check what the companion AI is doing. I'm not sure I'd believe it was a bug though because oops they did it again.

I think the best solution here is to not let action mode override ANY previous command set IF there are no commands being sent. It's the simplest solution I can think of, and I think a clarification if the setting's like this might be needed, seeing as it's a really, really quick fix.

They sent the wrong build for certification, so the release version had to be that build, even though it was missinga core feature. They told us all about it just before DA2's release (when they realised what they'd done).Wasn't that a bug though? As I understand it was supposed to have auto attack but something went wrong and they ended up shipping a version without it, so they had to roll out these patches to re-add it to the game.

I get how people would call it button mashing but I prefer that to auto-attack personally. Feels more like I'm actually controlling my character and hitting things instead of just giving an order and sitting back

But that's where you're wrong; it is now an action game. It is also a tactical combat game. It is both.

I think you would like Pillars of Eternity more than any Bioware game you are ever going to get from now on. Bioware is never going to make Baldur's Gate or NWN again.
