The Reaper's main weapon is often referred to as a laser (because it looks like one)

But it is actually a cannon mounted from the top of the spine right down to the "head" from where the actual beam is fired. Instead of firing kinetic projectiles like most species do, it instead fires a steady stream of molten metal at a fraction of the speed of light.

The resulting beam works on the same principles as an "water jet cutter":

It cuts through the material it hits by its insane pressure. Armor of the organic species in the Mass Effect series is designed to withstand single shots of projectiles and not a steady stream of impossibly pressurized molten metal.

The reaper's powerful mass effect fields can also swing the beam around and use that to cut the target ship apart or hit multiple targets at once.

The actual beam is most likely only a few centimeters thick and keeps its destructive pressure over long range with "reaper magic"

Reaper destroyers use the same weapon, although it has a LOT less destructive power compared to the beam of a Sovereign-class reaper since their "barrel" is significantly shorter.

Sovereign-class reapers only have one such "main cannon", but Harbinger has a second one with increased firepower since he is one kilometer larger than a sovereign-class reaper. Harbinger uses both of them to kill anyone who tries to get to the "citadel beam"

In watching the videos during the from ashes dlc, capital ships can be seen firing two beams at once for a couple of seconds

Everything was better (or worse depending on your point-of-view) 50,000 years ago.  :D

Indeed. And that's where Thanix weaponry comes to be. To quote

The Thanix's core is a liquid alloy of iron, uranium, and tungsten suspended in an electromagnetic field powered by element zero. The molten metal, accelerated to a significant fraction of the speed of light, solidifies into a projectile as it is fired, hitting targets with enough force to pierce any known shield or armor. The gun can fire reliably every five seconds. The weapon's relatively small size allows it to be mounted on most fighters or frigates, including the Normandy SR-2, giving them firepower rivaling that of a cruiser.

Sovereign is special after all.

He's the one who has to try to stay hidden all the time and determine when he has to let the reapers loose. This cycle is an exception as the protheans screwed up the initial plan on triggering the reaper apocalypse by sending a signal so Sovereign had to move his butt and do it himself, making himself vulnerable.

Lose = to fail or not win

Loose = being attached poorly, dangling. Also a woman with few moral standards

You're welcome

This is the reason why I think Reapers are awful villains. Not in the sense of story, but in their fighting capabilities. Unless you have an entire fleet of them, these ''lasers'', no matter what they're made of, would be extremely inefficient.

A laser being basically a straight line... makes it so, so easy to dodge. Even worse for the reapers, they can be completely defenseless from the back, flanks and even from the front if the pilots knew how to fly their ships.

And yet, on the campaign... GOOD LORD, IT'S THE NUKE OF THE FUTURE! I swear I burst out laughing when the hoodie-wearing little chap's shuttle went down. It's like the pilot wasn't even trying. I mean... the laser can't even turn left or right. So much in fact that Superman Shepard is able to stand directly in front of one, vaguely going left or right to dodge the laser. This is, though, a bunch of crap, as the reaper could have used its intelligence and tried to maybe crush Shepard.

Yet, it still proves how crap the laser is. Admittedly, I can see the laser being effective for destroying buildings or something, but for fighting? Nah.

...maybe unless you're a machine with perfect accuracy, and that has so lightning-fast reactions that time is directly irrelevant for you, so you can take your time at aiming at your objectives, and evaporate them before they even have a chance to breath twice.

...which obviously the Reapers aren't. Or they were drunk that day, seeing how they can utterly fail in that matter.
