Recently I've been listening to a lot of EDM.
Funny thing is, I didn't even know I liked EDM a year ago.

Now to answer this thread (finally seriously.)
I'm strange.
I like House and all that rubbish as simple noise IF by chance I go out. The beat helps and that's about it.
But what I REALLY love is gaming music or anything to do with soundtracks from series like Game of Thrones or movies like The Lord of the Rings.
Funnily enough, I like music in a totally foreign language. I have a liking to it when I don't understand the lyrics...
Anyway, my range goes from stuff like this
To stuff like this
So they vary. And it really depends on what I'm doing.
Don't lie.
*snip*
We both listen to this every night.
If you say I'm lying when I said I listen to pretty much everything, wouldn't that postulate a greater likelyhood of me NOT listening to your linked music compared to my initial statement?
That said, I do have more metal and rock than anything else in my music library.

Better than all your library!
To show his greatness I can say he has more good symphonies than Mozart and Beethoven combined.
Anything that resembles Star Wars (John Williams) music is a must listen. But Hans Zimmer is overrated!
One Piece has great soundtracks:

I mostly like metal and hard rock. I'm likely to be at least okay with anything purely instrumental as I'm pickier about vocals than I am about other things, and I do enjoy classical music; I also like some punk and some lighter rock occasionally.
I listened to a lot of KPOP, I don't think it's possible to displace KPOP when it comes to just music for music's sake. The closest thing to kpop outside of KPOP is (was?) Miley Cyrus musically anyway.
When it comes to music in a different context like a video game or something it is usually some Hollywood Score or atmospheric video game composer like Yoko Shimomura or Koji Kondo.
So it's
or
or whatever... mostly.... now..
Genre matters not. To me, the works should be sincere (I have to sense that this song really means something to the musician and it is not simply a money grab for them), the music should aptly and seamlessly convey the idea such that I the listener can feel it resonate with me, the vocalists (if applicable) should understand their voices and use them to complement the music effectively.
Any music that meets that criteria is good to me. That said, I gravitate most to bands that play rustic rock 'n roll tunes.
I also really enjoy Asian (south- and east-Asian) music.

I can't really nail down the specific genres of the music I like to listen to outside of Hip-Hop. Anything the sounds good is the kind of music I gravitate towards.
In general, I think less about the music I consume than anything else; it either catches my ear or it doesn't, and that's about it. I just don't have anything intelligent to say about my music at all. I suppose that's not different from the other media I consume, but in the case of the latter I at least make the ill-advised attempt to come up with something interesting to say or think about them.
There's not much of a theme to the music I listen to except that a disproportionate amount of it doesn't feature any singing at all; guess I'm just not that compelled by the human voice as a musical instrument for some reason. There's stuff like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Dirty Three, Mogwai, etc. I've also been listening to a lot of retro synth stuff like Com Truise and whatnot. Beyond that, there are the usual indie suspects, like Joy Division, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, etc. I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of right now.

This is true of me as well. None of the things that I think I like in music is sufficiently generalizable to make any sense. I can't really explain positive reasons for liking particular bands or songs...or negative reasons for not liking them even though I like something that is musically similar.
I don't know if this is related to what you two were talking about but I think that's one of the reasons I have these (somewhat) in-congruent tastes like KPOP for music but play a game like Mass Effect or something.
Music being generalized or expanded upon in any meaningful sense seems to deteriorate the art form the same way that reducing Mass Effect into a pure multiplayer cover shooter or something doesn't make any sense. Consequently, 'intelligent' rock or whatever is basically meaningless to me for the most part. I might be interested in what that person has to say about supply side economics or something but music seems to me like largely a stock measure of sheer emotional swagger. If someone has something longer they want to say they probably shouldn't make music at all.
Anything that scream commercial and dishonesty is awful. I actually love everything. From classic to rock. But my preference is usually Punk/grunge (Not pop punk or post grunge. Well sometime) and instrumental (I love movie soundtrack too. Like requiem of a dream etc (Although it was overused and I got sick of it).
Anyway. Hell I can even remotly accept glam metal lol. I love Bach to trash Metal. Anything that scream authenticity and talent in some sort of way. Anything fake or made for the sole reason of cheap entertainment annoy me. Especially when you know the band was made by some office business man.
Like Hair Metal band. IE: ? Cinderella lol. Awful.
Stupid and shallow twerking pop music give me zit. Although sometime I cheat and pop some ''bad'' pop music. Like Gangnam style lol. I love Mj though. Because the guy was actually talented.
But being a musician myself. I developed a lot of my musical sense over the years. So I can ''like'' everything. I try not to be a snob. Because snobing make you unable to grow has a human being.
But just like reality t.v .. If I am in the same room and you pop it. I am getting the **** out of your house. You're polluting my immediate environment. I don't care if you think I am an ass. I can't accept this kind of stuff. Sorry. ( My sister love reality showcommercial music and she know how much I hate it. So she never talk about it when I visit her lol.)

One of the most interesting things to me about any art form is the way it has of communicating thoughts and ideas to you in those subtle ways where maybe even if you didn't pick up on it, your brain did. To take movies, for example, the placement of characters in a frame, the camera angles used and the lighting can all work together to suggest something about the mental or emotional state of the characters, or even to suggest something about larger social and political issues; we can often pick up on these cues even if we can't precisely articulate their meaning afterwards. I wouldn't want to deny that music, even wordless music, can have this kind of expressive power, but I just don't think I have the knowledge (i.e. music theory, etc.) to say much about it.
The short answer would be metal. I have a preference for the more technical and progressive styles. From Cynic to Watchtower to Meshuggah,
But I like getting influence from other styles, especially classical and jazz. They are a gold mine of ideas for musicians. Also since I started training vocals I have developed an appreciation for pop. I don't really like the style but the technique, precision and talent some vocalists have is mind blowing. Singing metal doesn't require any of that as far as tonality goes. If you can belt a A4 you are fine. Destroying your vocal chords in the process.

Being older than most I don't care for a reasonable amount of the new stuff however I will acknowledge that some of it takes some real talent. I like a lot of different genres but am a real Heretic because I think that the Blues is massively overrated as a genre and that at least half of all jazz is crap.

Good ol' Country is better than Blues. Though the whole beat and Guitar parts of Blues is attractive.
Don't know yet, but some Jazz are really low quality and cheap. An average classical piece easily defeats 4/5 of Jazz pieces.
2Pac mostly. I Also listen to Ice Cube, Eazy E, Too Short, Nate Dog, Snoop Dogg. 90s West Coast Gangsta Rap basically. Oh and Aaliyah.
I listen to a lot of stuff. The music I've listened to since I was kid was mostly rock and edm/jungle (or Drum and Bass for you younger folk). Lately I've been going back and listening to some shoegaze a lot.
Also The Knife cause I love them!

P.S. Swedish people make some sick tunes....
Pretty much whatever catches my ears.
But to narrow it down to artists I really like,
Daft Punk
Zedd
Avicii
Breaking Benjamin
Imagine Dragons
Capital Cities
Pendulum
Owl City
Ellie Goulding
Madeon
AWOLNATION
Three Days Grace
and Living Illusion.
Some people may also know about my interest in Vocaloids. But I honestly don't listen to Miku that often. Same goes for Baby Metal.
Kool and Klean have some good albums too. Nice blend of Electronic and Smooth Jazz.
